RNZAF Museum makes its photo archive available to the public

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand ( RNZAF) is making its significant photo archive available for public downloads with the first 5000 images now online.

The images range from the earliest military aviation in NZ to current times and span aircraft, people and equipment.

Among the archive treasures now downloadable are images from the earliest days of the New Zealand Permanent Air Force in the 1920s, and photos from donated collections.

One gem is from the album of NZ WW1 flying ace Keith "Grid" Caldwell which shows pilots and SE5as of 85 Squadron at St Omer in 1918. Note how the censors have blanked out the aircraft radiators.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave. This is a great collection of photos from all eras and I imagine that it will grow significantly. I like the way the photo descriptions pop up when you hover over the thumbnails.

Yes indeed! I'm digging this archive because, being a Yank, I usually only stumble across interesting RNZAF photos while searching for something specific like a plane or pilot. This archive is easily browsed and I can sit here for hours seeing stuff that I never knew was out there. To the extent that a picture says a 1000 words, I think I've learned more about the RNZAF in the past few hours than I did in 20 years of reading the occasional book or blog.
