Which Camel book?
« on: February 08, 2020, 02:59:51 AM »
I am very much inspired by the currant build of the 1/16 Hasegawa Sopwith Camel on this forum and would like to build one myself someday.
It is not exactly my favourite aircraft, would rather build something German in that scale, but it seems to bo one the most detailed kit available of all giant scale kits out there, so a camel it is.

But I am no Camel expert, so I am looking for a book, one that shows all the interior details. The outside, cockpit and engine, that is no problem, plenty of referances available. Not so for the rigging inside the wings or the fuel lines and so on.

For other planes (mostly WWII/modern Japanese) that I build I know some sources, but what would be the best book to buy so I can get the most out of this kit?
please let me know your idea and if you have it for sale, even better.

many thanks, Hidde van der Donk from Holland

A bit off the wall as a suggestion - how about the Haynes manual?

https://www.theworks.co.uk/p/transport-books/haynes---sopwith-camel-manual/9780857337955?CAWELAID=720011340002685446&gclid=CjwKCAiA1fnxBRBBEiwAVUouUusMnLyf1ufjiqKeckLG_XmH8bzG-R8uVsqItud4x_AKdB08XYJtIBoC7EUQAvD_BwE

It's cheap, and seems to have lots of pictures. I wouldn't trust it as a historical source, should be good as a photographic one

I have a near finished 1/16 camel which is currently on the shelf of doom until I summon the strength to finish! The Haynes book is useful but I found that no one book (and I have a few) has the detail you sometimes require - however searching the web I usually found what I needed (including some YouTube videos of the cockpit which were very useful).Of course lots of these pics are of reproduction Camels so the details often vary and may not always be accurate. Cheers Matt

Hidde,
I know it's not a book, and so, as a resource, it's not reliable per se, but Ken Foran's scratchbuilt Camel has always been an inspiration for me.

It also made me want to give up and collect stamps instead. ;)

Hidde,
By coincidence I received a offer from Cross and Cockade International to subscribe to their journal and links to their website just this morning. I found this in their "Books" section:

An E-book by Jim Kiger titled "Sopwith F-1 Camel - Stripped". From the information it appears to be just what you are looking for ........

https://www.crossandcockade.com/store/Product.asp?cat=52&id=290

    Hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
Lance
