‘Hurricat’
« on: January 07, 2020, 01:48:34 AM »
Hi all,

Apologies, been a bit quiet on the building front here as I’ve had a few non WW1 (yes, I know  ::)) builds on the go.

Just thought this might be of interest - 1/48 Hurricane (Airfix) and the Catapult by NeOmega.

I may make the Armory Models 1/48 Fairey Flycatcher, if I do, I’ll probably do a progress build here  ;) as it’s got 2 wings and rigging!

Thanks for looking in...

Thanks Juan, Andreas & Lance!

Amazingly brave pilots when you think about it.. no where to land, just a ditching or bailing out in the rough seas of the Atlantic. I don’t think I’d be volunteering for that one in a hurry...

Thanks Chaps,

Yep, doesn’t look like it would work, does it? Although the ramp is obviously longer in reality. It had a bunch of rockets on the trolley to fire it off, full power, flaps down and angled at 5 degrees nose up... she must have literally staggered into the air..

Okay Guy.. how did you know the Hawker Hurricane is my favourite WW2 aircraft? ( the SE5a has that title for WW1).

I'm in awe of your model. A late friend of mine Bob Spurdle was a Camship Hurricane pilot on the North Atlantic run and he was a Battle of Britain pilot too. He said sitting on a Camship launcher was more terrifying than any of his BoB combats!

I'd love to see the Armory Flycatcher too, I have the old Inpact kit calling to be built.

cheers

Thanks Dave,

I’m in awe of your friend! Incredible that have chatted to someone who’s actually done that..

An outstanding model, Guy.  Nicely weathered and detailed.
One day I hope to be able to paint a figure that well!

Now that really is different. For a long time I wanted to build this in 1/72 scale but there were no suitable kits available at the time. Wonderful to see one built though - and a tribute to those pilots who did risk all flying them.

I knew a sailor who was on the first of the Cam ships: it was sunk by a bomber when sailing along the east coast of England after the catapult had been fitted but without an aircraft mounted. He survived with what he stood up in - sadly some other members of the crew were not so lucky.

Stephen.
