1/72 Airfix Albatros Dv
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:25:57 PM »
Picked this up in a 3 for 2 sale at the local hobby shop. Using some WNW instructions from their site am making my first attempt at scratch building some parts.

So far I used masking tape to simulate the ribs and spars in the cockpit area. Coated them in future then attempted to paint the wood grain. Not perfect but not much will be seen.

Built the rear bulkhead and seat from flat card and brass rod. Its just blue tacked together as Im still shaping the seat. Made 2 tiny eyelets to attach the harness too.

Filled the ejector pin marks with punched plastic discs which now need sanding down.

Not the best of pic as I only have a camera on my phone.

You're off to a great start on a rough kit.  I'm looking forward to following your progress.
Cheers,

Hi there!
I appreciate the cockpit ribs and the wood grain, it's convincing enough IMHO.
Perhaps you are already doing so but I would try to sharpen the ridge of the seat.
As per the ejector pins marks filled that way I think it'll be hard to sand them down preserving the visibility of the wing ribs, but that's the fun part of our work!!!!!!

Good luck!!!

 ;)

Yorki,
Great trip down memory lane for this "senior" modeller. I built this kit in the mid 1960's, my first shot at rigging and it took a lot of work to produce a decent result. I still have the spool of invisible mending thread I used, unfortunately the Alby fell victim to a moving crew. Keep at it, it's looking good.
Cheers,

Respect for attempting to tidy up the interior of this kit.  I am looking forward to your progress - I made this one but mainly to test painting techniques.

I found that sanding down the wings having filled the ejector marks, some of the wing surface plastic delaminated, I reckon due to age.

Yorki,
I'm pretty sure you are referring to Ian's comment on "Age" however I proudly represent that remark; I'm older then the Kit. (a testament to the resiliancy of the human body..mind not included!)
Cheers,
Lance ;) :) :)

This kit and the old Airfix Brisfit are the first two WWI A/C I built back when they were newish releases Lordy this takes me back to then, It also started a slow long growing affection toy the Albatros D series, even as a kid its sleek graceful lines delighted me.

On Aeroscale  a while back many of us started whining cos manufaturers missed small details or things werent quite right I suggested we should all build one of these old early Airfix or similar kits and realise just how fortunate we are these days with whats on offer.

I like the hands on approach to adding the detail simple but nicely done.

You're a far braver man than I, and a masochist to boot.  ;)  Good work so far.

Ok so Ive decided masking tape is not the best route as it started peeling off. So I have lashed out and spent another £5.10 on the airwaves etched brass.  ( Is amazing how many papers you have to deliver to earn £5.10...).

So stripping off and sanding back I have fixed in the inner frames, scratch built the front bulkhead and ammo containers. Opened up the front fuse.

That's looking good! Does the etched brass have a selection of differant radiators? It looks like it does....

That's a lot of detail in a very small space, Yorki. Looking very nice indeed, and a lot better then the one I built almost 50 years ago! Looking forward to following your progress on this classic.
Cheers,
Lance :)
