Taking a Trip to Italy is in My Future
« on: September 21, 2019, 05:14:34 AM »
I will Most Likely be Traveling to Italy in about 9 months. My Son who works for Booking dot com is in need of an operation and the best choice is a Surgeon in Italy vs The Netherlands where he is based. I will keep all posted but would Love to see a little WW1 air History and perhaps meet a couple of our Italian Modelers while there. Date is fluid at this time.

Hallo Rick, there are some small museums featuring WW1 items scattered through italian regions. Please feel free to ask for informations, I'm sure all of italian forumites have something to share.
Best wishes to your son.

Thanks Giuseppe. The surgery is for an issue with his Nose/ Nasal passages  so not anything Life Threatening.  He will need a little attention for a couple of weeks so his Mother and I will be there. The Hospital is in Mantua? so I don't have a clue where that is relative to Members and Historical sites?

From Mantova, the closest WW1 related site (but with very little in aviation stuff) is in Gardone Riviera: il Vittoriale ( https://www.vittoriale.it ) a complex where italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio spent the last part of his adventurous life. The only aeronautical relics found there are the SVA X used in the propaganda flight over Wien, a couple of SVA engines, a few machine guns and some  small items. The location anyway is really amazing. Second place in distance is Museo Caproni ( http://www.museostorico.it/index.php/Luoghi/I-luoghi-della-Fondazione/Museo-dell-aeronautica-Gianni-Caproni ) in Trento, hosting a small but significant aircraft collection. Next is Volandia ( http://volandia.it ) based in the historic site of Caproni factory and in close proximity of Malpensa airport and a larger collection, but still little from WW1. If your stay will be including a trip to central Italy, the Air Force museum ( http://www.aeronautica.difesa.it/storia/museostorico/Pagine/info.aspx ) is probably the best aeronautical museum in Italy and it features something more from WW1, including a Caproni Ca3 bomber and a Lohner flying boat. I'm sure more suggestions will come, but these can be good points to start with.

Thanks Giuseppe! I appreciate the info. I don't know what the Travel possibilities are relative to trains and other versions are so I will continue to research as I go forward!

Hey RAG, you have to visit the Vittoriale on Lake Garda as GB says. Amazing place, with D'Annunzio's Ansaldo (unfortunately high overhead), torpedo boat, schwarzlose mgs, cars and lots of WWI ephemera. The most stunning thing is the cruiser Puglia, jutting out of a hillside: you walk along a hilly path and suddenly are on the deck of a warship! Surreal stuff! Marvellous grounds.
I spent a whole day there and didn't want to leave at closing time.

hey Rick!
if you are flying in form abroad you will likely land in Malpensa or Rome.
if you are landing in Malpensa, as Giuseppe said, Volandia is really “walking distance”. Another destination is Sience Museum in Milan the biggest in Italy (2 hours drive from Mantua, 1 hour train from Malpensa) there is a nice plane section with some ww1 planes (but also ww2 and jet era) (www.museoscienza.org).
if you are landing in Rome, Vignadivalle is probably the best! but then you will have to continue jour jurney to Milan anyway....
I live there, so keep in touch!
ciao

Hi Rick!
I live ten minutes by car near Malpensa airport and Volandia museum (I am one of the volunteers there), you will be welcome for visit, keep in touch.
Mantua is one of our little jewels as city, enjoy!
Other places not so far from Mantua are the San Pelagio Museum, were the famous 87a Squadriglia started its flight over Vienna (https://www.castellosanpelagio.it/) and the Lugo di Romagna museum dedicated to our first Ace in WWI Francesco Baracca (http://www.museobaracca.it/).
Greetings,
Roberto

The Barraca museum in Lugo is definitely worth a visit. It contains artifacts pertaining to the ace,but also other WW1 artifacts. And if you are interested in Formula 1 racing, they have one of Schumachers Ferrraris parked inside. We went about 6 years ago, even wifey found it interesting which did surprise me lol!Just off the main square there is also a monument to aviators which is interesting too.
