plastic + metal which glue?
« on: October 30, 2022, 09:11:12 PM »
Good morning,
I am building an Italian Nieuport 11, being the first ever it is more correct to say that I am trying, having to build a piece that obviously is not in the kit, the particular Italian support for the Lewis on the wing, I need to glue plastic with metal specifically I think it is aluminum, they are mixed-case parts.
I have two types of glue available, AK EXTRA THIN CEMENT orange cap and AK MAGNET cyanoacrylate, nothing to do they don't stick, what can I use? :'(

Thank you
Ciao

I don't know AK glues, but the CA should do the job. Some CAs set fast, others slowly but you only need a small amount - a large pool will take forever to dry and cure. You can get accelerators (in a bottle or a spray can) to speed up setting to instant.
I'd try a very small spot of the CA, of course if it is old it may not set at all. (Keep CA in the fridge to extend its life.)

Thanks for the prompt reply.
The cyanoacrylate glue is about one year old, however, always kept in a cool and dry place.
Do you think it does not work because it has expired?

Which cyanoacrylate glue do you recommend?

I tried gluing some 0.12 fishing line for rigging and the glue works.

Hi MG, at one year it should still work fine. Have you tried cementing a couple of pieces of scrap plastic with it - if that doesn't work, then the CA is past use.
I use a whole variety of CA glues, picked up at model shows, can't think what's on the workbench at the moment. (not at home just now), but for a simple plastic to metal joint, the cheap stuff from a Nickel and Dime store should be perfectly good enough.

Yes, you are right, I must apologize but since everything appears to me translated in a hurry, I was convinced that I used English !!!
