Hi everybody,
I am happy to start my new topic after my long absence from this forum. I will build WNW's Jeannin Stahltaube 283/14 Adlershof-Johannisthal.

I am also very happy to share my experiences troughout this build. During my last WWI and WWII projects I missed your comments and the spirit of this forum. This Stahltaube project and especially this type of plane will definetely be a lesson for me in terms of structural and non-structural rigging and painting techniques for the translucent wings.
With greetings from Bonn, Germany
Dirk

Here are the references I am gonna work with:
1: Marian Krzyzan and Holger Steinle: Die Jeannin Stahltaube A.180/14 - A very informative and nice to read inside-report on the restauration of the Stahltaube that is exhibited at the Technik-Museum in Berlin (in German language).
2. The essential Windsock Datafile 104.

Looking forward to seeing this early bird come to life.

Welcome back to the spotlights Dirk! This should prove a very interesting Build, there hasn't been a lot of Taube action here and on examining the Kit recently I was most impressed with what's there and particularly how delicately detailed it is. I'll be following your progress closely.
Cheers,
Lance

Hi, Dirk! Good to see you back again on the forum. Me too I ´m curious about your painting techniques for the translucent effects
Highest regards

Thanks everybody for staying tuned. I guess that this will be a long-time project. Today I started cutting off all the cockpit parts from the sprue. And as Eric already pointed out: the impressive parts are very tiny and fragile and require lots of care and attention!
@ Jörg: Yesterday I realized that your "Caudron G4 Hydravion" won Gold at the Euro Model Expo 2017. So congratulations belated!

@ Translucent effect: I had the chance to experiment with the translucent effect on my Albatros B.II 676/15 build. Especially the effect of the silhouettes of the eisernkreuz markings that are slightly visible from underneath was interesting to depict.

Wow! How did you do the translucent cross?

Wow! How did you do the translucent cross?
Hi Softscience,
the contours were sprayed with the help of a self-made mask. I used a highly diluted mix of Tamiya Nato black and clear. Layers of glazing coats with a mix of clear, buff and white were then applied. The coats dampened the contrast between the silhouette of the structure and the linen to the intended effect.

Hi Dirk,
Your Albatros B.II is stunning! I love the translucent cross effect on the wing. I'll have to give that a try when I build mine.
Glad to see you've started your Taube. I had thought of doing the same scheme you've chosen as the CDL wings will make an attractive contrast to the grey fuselage but I wanted to do one with the Argus engine so have chosen scheme 'A'. Also, the unique wing-mounted compass is interesting.
Cheers,
Eric

The Albatros translucent effect is awesome. I am looking forward to what you do with the Taube!

Hi everybody,
a small update on my work on the fuselage. I painted the fuselage in unbleached linen with Tamiya XF57 and the interior in grey green with lightened XF76. For the bracing wires my choice came to EZ Line fine elastic thread. The line was fixed with C/A Gel and 0.5 Albion brass was added.

Finally the wire was painted with XF 16 Flat aluminum

Great work on your bracing lines! I opted to not add turnbuckles to mine due to limited visibility but they sure do make a nice touch.

Good argument, Eric. Currently I am not sure if I want to display my Taube with open cowlings or not. So I took the long way...
Cheers and get well soon!

some pictures of my work on the cockpit. First the instrument board and the floor were sprayed with Tamiya buff lightened with white. After a coat of gloss varnish I used different oil paints like burnt umbra, english red, burned sienna and black.

After a few days a coat of clear orange followed.

While working on the cockpit and adding the intrument placards, I found this humorous message linked to Peter Jacksons side projects ;)
Decal no 38 is a navigators memo to be postitioned on the map board. I used my zoom function of my digicam to get the exact position of the decals. While checking the decal #38 I found this:
The text is partially in german language:
"Hinweise auf Graeben
2 km westlich von Artillerie"
-------------------------------------------------------
"Suche Standort fuer den Herr der Ringe Teil 4"
------------------------------------------------------------
"Pick-up ein paar Bier fuer die Jungen"
In translation:
"Hints for ditches
2 km west of artillery"
------------------------------
"Searching for location for Lord of the Rings part 4"
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Pick-up some beers for the boys"
Well that's humor! Hats off Peter Jackson! :)

Hi Dirk
This is looking really fantastic. Wonderful detail.
I just have to ask; are you the same "Dirk" who did the revenue cutter? It'll sound like a strange question if you aren't but you seem like you might be the same person given your obvious skills.

Hi Alistair,
thanks for your positive response. I am mainly interest in 1/32 aircraft modeling and have no experiences in ship modelling. I have seen some pictures of the 1815 Revenue Cutter and I am deeply impressed what those guys achieve with their kits, especially with the rigging.

Hi everybody,
a little update on the cockpit: Today I finished HGW's microtextile seatbelts. The assembly was time consuming but worth the effect. I used small quantities of Dark Mud Pigments from MIG and sealed the belts with satin varnish. A washing with heavily thinned umbra oilpaints followed.

Looking very good Dirk! Can't beat those HGW belts.
I'm about to close the fuselage up on mine.

Hi Eric, yes I have seen that, by finishing the engine you have overtaken my build with a considerable lead of a few days ;). I really enjoy the build and I am glad to have you by my site.

Oh, you'll catch up soon enough. I've had quite a bit of time to work on it during my time off recovering from my hip surgery but that will end in couple weeks when I return to work. :)
Which engine are you using? If it's the Argus, be aware that the fuselage opening needs trimmed for it to fit. That's mentioned in the instructions but what they don't make clear is that both sides need trimmed, not just the small forward area pointed to. Just test fit and sand a little bit at a time until adequate clearance is achieved all the way around.
Cheers,
Eric

Hi Eric,
thanks a lot for the note! My type is fitted with the Daimler-Benz engine. I really like the Argus engine and plan to build it as a seperate display model. I already had a few fitting issues while building the WNW Albatros, the RE.8 and the SE5a. To add the engine cowlings in a removable way over the detailled up engine required lots of sanding and dry fitting. My impression was that the kits are mainly constructed for showing the engine without the cowlings. But I suppose that due to the construction of the Taube this problem will not appear. Nevertheless its important for me to have an eye on the fitting of the port and starboard side cowlings...
Cheers, Dirk

Hi Dirk,
I was just wondering how your Taube was coming along since you've not posted an update for a while. Hopefully you've not run into any snags.
I just posted an update on my thread. All the main painting and decals are done. Time for the really fun stuff...some light weathering then painting the metal scale effect on the nose!
A word of warning regarding the big wing decals...they are brittle. I suspect it's the white ink as I've not had a problem with the black lettering or other colors and the splitting I experienced was all on the white areas. I ended up having to touch up a number of areas with white paint. Mainly around the small holes for the rigging attachment points.
Cheers,
Eric

Hi Eric,
I was out of business/hobby for a few weeks because of eastern holidays. Now spring is come along with strength and I am out for cycling, running and trekking. I have already spent a few hours working on the engine.
Thanks for the warning regarding the decals! I will be back in business quite soon as the weather gets colder and rainy the coming days...

Hi Dirk,
Good to hear all is well and nothing has gone awry on your Taube. I was an avid cyclist in my younger days and remember many a cold winter longing for spring so I could back out on the road.
I look forward to seeing futher updates when available. In the mean time, enjoy the warm weather!

Hi Dirk,
And another Taube!
I'm also building and I can use good suggestions.
Especially if they are as good as they are here.
Looks really good! 8)
