Although I'm still plugging away on the WNW Brandenburg W.12, I plan on starting this one very soon. Because of the sparsity of references and the less than simple rigging, I had put off buying this one for years, but since it was the last of the currently available CSM resin kits that I didn't already have, I finally broke down and ordered it. It arrived two weeks ago and I've been itchin' to start it ever since. It's really a sweet kit and aside from the SM.1, probably CSM's best resin kit ever. Before I get started, though, I'd like to know if anyone has any photos or drawings of the cockpit. So far, my searches have been fruitless, but I'm hoping someone can come through for me. If not, I can simply fake it and no one can prove me wrong. ;)

Very interesting subject, Bud. I am sure that you'll turn it into another master class Modell. I'll follow your posts curiously.
Best wishes
Andreas
-
Thank you, Andreas! I think you would like this kit. It's right up your alley.
If I can figure out how to paint figures and what Russian naval uniforms looked like, I might just turn this one into a diorama. You've inspired me, my friend.
Cheers,
Bud

Nothing like doing a dual build is there Amigo!

it looks a very beautiful kit.
what decoration have you choose?

Hey Bud, nice model you got there)
was there Gnome Monosoupape in the kit as separete set?
just in case you if missed that picutere

Thanks for checking in, Edgar! If you are referring to E48-009, no, it was not included. Just the original kit engine as shown in the fourth parts photo. It's fine, though. It's really a nice engine.
As for the photos, those are included in the instruction sheets. The ones you sent are much sharper, though. Thanks for that.
http://aviadejavu.ru/Site/Crafts/Craft19959.htm
Thank you for this, as well. Although I found no clear cockpit photos, these are a great help for overall structure, rigging and schemes.
Really looking forward to those 1/48 Russian figures. The 1/32 ones are awesome.
Cheers,
Bud

Xan
It is a beautiful kit, Xan! One I'm sure you would love. Do you have it? I really like the Ottoman scheme, but if I do that one, I will deviate from the instructions just slightly as the instructions indicate that the rudder was black with the "moon and star" motif. That plane was in service with the Turks in 1918 and by that time, according to Rahmi Kocaman, the moon and star were white on a red field, not black. My second choice would be number 37 in Imperial Russian markings of 1916. Both have a grey and white hull with cdl wings and tail surfaces. I plan on using Aviattic CDL for that.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Great to see you unbox this kit Bud, I have also started my build of the same kit but I posted mine in the Resin board.
Des.
-
Wow, another seaplane. I thing it will be a beauty, too.
Will watch carefully,
Manni
-
I see if I can find any interior info in my refs budrow
-
I will send you a figure for a diaorama)
You have russsian WWI figure au 1/48?
in CSM web site there is no pictures for figure at 1/48. can they be seen anywhere else?
Xan
-
Another very interesting type - I do like these flying boats. Are scale drawings supplied with the kit?
Stephen.
-
Interesting choice Bud , not one seen at all being built . Guitarlute 101 ( Mark ) started this kit way back , but I don't recall if he ever finished it .
I might be able to help you with some refs for this build . I had a great friend send me a file folder and a CD full of info . Just don't recall what is in the ref . Been a long time since I even looked at the kit . Eric did a beautiful job , one of his best . And by the looks of it Edgar has kept the tradition alive !
Terri

Hi Bud
I will be following this one with great interest. I have a vacuform version but with hindsight it would have been more sensible to get the CSM version. The rigging looks a bit of a challenge!
Alan.
-
Please build it, Des
It is a very Good model and the struts are a challenge like a scratchbulit model.
And it is a very interesting subject.
-
Good luck with the build Bud. I'll certainly follow it with interest.
Best wishes

Hey Bud
I just received one of these from a listee offering kits for sale. It arrived Saturday.
Nice looking kit. I do love CSM kits and this one looks a beaut. Ill have to wait to start until i have more free time. This one's sippin whiskey as opposed to drinkin liquor as it were.
I have some pretty good Russian references, ill check and see what is there.

I went through my library, Bud, but sadly didn't find any pics of Russian Naval Infantry. Even the Osprey book on the Russian Army 1914-18 doesn't show one. Sorry! At least there's a nice profile of a Russian pilot. Interested?
Maybe people more specialized in Eastern Front affairs can help out?
Best wishes
Andreas
-
Well there is another one ahead of me now !!
Ed
-
I checked Bud , nothing on the cockpit . Sorry my friend .
Terri

Thank you all so much for your warm encouragement and your offers of help. I'm sorry to take so long to respond, but we've had a lot going on lately, what with selling a house and planning a couple trips.
Bud)better do the Russian markings)
I will send you a figure for a diaorama)
I think I will do a Russian scheme, especially now that I received that beautiful Russian pilot, Edgar. Wow, is it awesome! No detail lost in sizing it down from 1/32 to 1/48!
Another very interesting type - I do like these flying boats. Are scale drawings supplied with the kit?
Stephen.
That's pretty much all there is, Stephen.

You're absolutely correct, Steve! This is one to savor, not to rush. Consequently, I may be on this one for the better part of a year. I hope to see you get going on yours sometime soon.

I had completely forgotten that I had the Osprey book, Russian Aces of World War 1 by Victor Kulikov. In it, there are several good photos of Russian Navy pilots that will come in handy. Thank you for checking for me, Andreas. You're a real pal.
I checked Bud , nothing on the cockpit . Sorry my friend .
Terri
Terri, after snooping around on line, I came to the conclusion that there really ain't much out there. What I did find, though, will be some help. All I really need now is that sheet showing the photo etch placement.
Des expressed some concern that I may have dropped this subject, so I figure I'd better post something, even though it's not much.
Instrument panel complete based on photos that Edgar sent me.

I used Part photo etched seats because I like the look of a coarse woven seat for a flying boat.

Here's a view of the IP installed. Still need to paint the cockpit combing.(http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af342/coyotemagic_photos/Grigorovich%20M-5/2016-09-29%2010.56.42_zpsf0elk0bp.jpg)
Decided on grey and white for the hull.
White base coat for the upper surface cdl. I'll mask off the rib tapes and spray Modern desert sand.
And Tamiya Dark Yellow for the underside base coat to represent ribs and spars showing through. Agian, ribs and spars will be masked and Modern Desert Sand over it.

This is what the fin, rudder and undersurfaces will look like prior to applying Aviattic CDL decals.

I'll try to be a little more timely with my updates. :-[
Cheers,
Bud

I'm kinda taking a liking to your scheme choice Bud . I would say you are making good progress so far . Oh yeah check your PM :)
Terri
-
Thanks, T! I'm pretty much copying Chris Savaglio's scheme, except for the markings. He went post revolution and I'm sticking with Imperial Russian Navy. PM received and answered. Thanks again, Sis!
Cheers,
Bud

Bud,
Outstanding works to date my old friend. Very impressive project as always from your talented bench.

Looks great, the instrument panel is outstanding!
Thanks for showing,Manni

Looking great as always Bud! Your instrument panel is terrific! The seats are a nice difference.

Thank you, Gregory, Manni and Rick! This is going to be slow going as considerable thought has to go into each step. Not something I'm used to.
Looking great as always Bud! Your instrument panel is terrific! The seats are a nice difference.

Artistic licence at work here, Amigo. No photos of the original interior.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Bud the instrument panel is outstanding just as the rest of your work. I`m very curious the effect you`ll get after using the Aviattic`s CDL.
Great work - everything looks so neat and sharp!
-
Your interior may involve some artistic licence but it still looks very good. The photos will be very useful if I do decide to attempt a scratch build of one of these in the future.
Stephen.
-
Oh wow, awesome progress with the interior, Bud, very nice!
Andreas
-
Great progress Bud, the interior is looking superb.
Des.
-
Beautiful work, looking forward to next update.

this is like deja vu

Thank you, my friends!
Got all flying surfaces painted in preparation for the Aviattic decals.

Here's the first test shot just to give you an idea, Filip. The horizontal stabilizer has been decaled, the elevators have not.
There's a lot of cdl on this boat and I only had one sheet. I just ordered a second one, so there may be a moment's delay. Probably not, though. I'll just do the bottom wings and the tail feathers first so I can at least assemble those bits while waiting on the second sheet.
Cheers,
Bud
-
The rib pre shading and fabric effect decals look excellent Bud!
RAGIII
-
you are moving along beautifully Bud.
Des.
-
Thanks, Rick and Des! It's slow going, but progress is being made.
Still applying CDL decals and I'm following Richard's advice to take my time and allow each decal to fully set and cure before moving to the next. I've had no problems with this approach.
This was just after application.
I let the undersides sit over night, trimmed them with a new blade and sanding stick, then applied the national markings.
This is how the underside of the top wing looks.
And here's the top side. Still needs to be trimmed.
Next step is to attempt to build that insanely delicate tail assembly that Des did such a remarkable job on. Hope I can come close to what he did.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Hey Bud, this one will be spectacular I'm sure. The CDL decals work really nicely. I think it works better than paint.
-
Thanks, Gabe! Yeah, I really like these Aviattic CDL decals. In my opinion, the finish is much better than paint and the tonal variations seem to be limited only by the variety of base paint colors available. The only drawback as far as I'm concerned is the elasticity of the carrier film. Even when dry, it's a bit rubbery and challenging to trim, but the results are well worth the extra effort.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Looks fantastic Bud! The roundel see through is perfect!!
RAGIII
-
Thanks, Amigo! While the ribs and spars were still masked, I used pastels for the roundel colors, masking them with rings cut using a disc cutter. Only the third time I've done that and I'm pleased with the results.
Cheers,
Bud

Looking Super Duper - Keep going!!

Not seen CDL transfers before - these look smashing to say the least. Very effective all round - especially the see through effect. This is a really interesting log - great.
Stephen.
-
Thank you, Manni, Bob and Stephen! The fabric decals can be found here: http://www.aviattic.co.uk/linen-effect-decals.html Give 'em a try, Stephen. They're amazing.
Cheers,
Bud
-
The CDL looks absolutely fantastic!!! I really need to give these decals a thought!
The translucency effect is superb! You are building a magnificent kit Bud!
-
Thank you, Filip! I think a combination of shades would look fantastic on your Caudron. I'm really excited about that one.
Cheers,
Bud
-
I am just catching up with this build. Great job so far of an unusual machine, lovely cdl, great interior and will look fabulous when finished!

Been following when I can Bud and this is no different from your other , just simply super work ! 8)
Terri
-
Oh wow, Bud, you are making awesome progress! I love the CDL and its translucent effect. Looks really great!

Thank you, Sasho, Terri and Andreas! This one is going to be a very slow project. Due to the lack of any real instructions, a lot of time is spent going over the drawings and trying to figure out a workable sequence. The hull is very sturdy, but the wing attachments and the tail assembly are rather frail, so I'm doing as much painting, decaling and weathering as possible before putting everything together.
I've added most of the pe surface detail to the hull and added the decals.
The pe was tricky. I kept knocking bits off while handling and had to reglue many of them.
I also did a little weathering on the tail pieces.
And scuffed up the bottom a bit.
Next up, putting the tail together.
Cheers,
Bud

Ditto Amigo, see you are working up to the last minute before going to Telford. You are in for quite a treat ! Say hi to Edgar and Richard and all the others for me.

Great job, Bud, the weathering on the CDL looks excellent!
I also admire your patience on going through all the drawings and photographs. Obviously well worth the effort, looking at the result!

looks great bud, enjoying the hell out of the build.
-
What you have done so far is super. I am sure that the rest o the build will go well in spite of the wing attachment problem - doing a great job there Bud.
Stephen.
-
oooh, the honey coloured cockpit contrasts so good with the grey colour of the fuselage - superb job, please keep those updates coming!
-
I somehow missed the update on this lovely build. It is going to be a beauty, I will wait patiently for the next chapter. ;)
-
Really a very nice update, Bud, this finish looks very cool! It will be a pretty contrast between the grey tones and the CDL.
I'll watch closely when you attach the wings!
Best wishes
Andreas
-
The CDL is splendid Bud! Keep up the good work!
-
I'm tipping in late Bud, but certainly am impressed with this fine Build. Great work on the CDL areas and shading, this is already looking like a real winner!
Cheers,
Lance

Bud,
As always my old friend truly outstanding work. Looking very much forward to the next awesome update.

Thank you so much for all your kind words. I'm sorry, but I haven't really done much on this one since returning from Telford, what with the holidays and all. Besides, it's a bit of a challenge, so I decided to take a short break, work on something "quick and easy", and visit this one off and on as the spirit moves me.
Cheers,
Bud

Yup , this is my take on the MS A-1 , so I started Revell's 32 scale Fw 190 :)
