I was lucky to have picked up this model just before they became sold out, and completed it using photo-etched turnbuckles from RB Productions and gun barrels from Master. It was the first time I'd tried doing a lozenge decal scheme, and used Aviattic's great product - faded five-colour pattern. The figures were nicely sculpted miniatures from Model Cellar. Thanks for looking!
Cheers,
Gary

What a masterpiece. If I were building this model, I would be overjoyed if the final product looked like this. Spectacular wood and linen, very fine shading. Thanks for sharing, gedmundson!

Having seen this one "in the flesh" I can assure you all it's even better then you've placed it with your comments; magnificent Gary, what a great piece of modelling!

I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to post comments - I'm overwhelmed by the kind words about the model.
To answer the questions posed - Kreston asked about the wood grain. I base coated with a darker acrylic on the fuselage (Tamiya dark earth or something like it) and then used a diluted raw umber/burnt sienna oil paint smeared over a clear gloss to replicate wood grain. Over that I experimented with a clear orange gloss coat with Tamiya acrylic. It looks nice and shiny but I wished I'd weathered down the fuselage & decals a bit more.
George- you asked if I'd sent pics to Wingnut's website. Haven't done so yet, but I hope to get around to that soon. I enjoy checking their "customers models" section every once in a while and should contribute more than I do.
Cheers,
Gary

Gary,
Excellent work, the aircraft itself as we ll as the crew. Very very impressive.

a beautiful LVG for sure - I would love to do one of these again! My early effort was ok, but is starting to suffer from unsightly sagging of the wings... something that affects us all I suppose as we mature..... ;)
cheers

I understand your concern about the wings, and saw a few builds of this model that had noticable drooping wings before starting mine. WnW has you attach the wings separately to the middle piece (radiator section) in their instructions. But to help give better support and add some dihedral I built the upper wing section together in one piece and lifted the wing tips as the glue set up.

Gary, to my eye and IMHO, I don't think the level of weathering on the fuselage is a mis-match for that on the wings. I believe you have a nice and consistent level overall....there's nothing that jars the eye, at least in the photos.
I have been experimenting with using compound and wax over my gloss finishes and find it works very well to even out the gloss and allows one to choose just how glossy the finish will be. I believe this will go a long way in giving a more realistic and scale appearance to varnished fuselages.
Tamiya makes a range of compounds which I intend to try. They seem to be intended for the model car crowd but a finish is a finish is a finish.
Tamiya Polishing Compound (Coarse)
Finishing Materials
Recommended to be used after sanding with 1,000 grit or higher finishing abrasive, this coarse compound features outstanding polishing capabilities. Perfect for preparing surfaces for painting or smoothing down bumps or uneven surfaces.
Item 87068
Tamiya Polishing Compound (Fine)
Finishing Materials
This all purpose compound is great for further smoothing surfaces after using Tamiya Polishing Compound (Coarse), smoothing down undercoats, or polishing surfaces after painting.
Item 87069
Tamiya Polishing Compound (Finish)
Finishing Materials
Produced using special production techniques, this high grade polishing compound provides a perfectly smooth, glossy finish. Great for plane canopies or polishing cars after painting.
Item 87070
I'm really looking forward to your next build!
Cheers from NYC,
Michael

Michael,
I am glad you posted the Tamiya Polishing compound uses. I purchased one while in Montana and had no reason to know why ::)
