All,
Here is one of my next victims. I was going to make one from scratch to go along with my Fe2b and AEG as a representative bomber/early plane but I found this partially started kit for sale at my LHS. Couldn't resist! The kit is complete and the former owner removed all the surface detail on the flying surfaces which saves me some work for my new embossed skins. ;)
I'm also going to solder brass tail booms as the kit parts are photo etch and I think things would look a little strange all flat...
Thanks for looking,
Dan
-
Dan, I've had this kit on the Shelf of Doom for a few years, hoping to work up the skills to tackle it. I'm going to follow this closely to study and learn!
What escadrille are you going to choose?
Warren
-
Very nice Dan, I will be following along closely, wise choice to replace the PE tail booms with brass.
Des.
-
That looks interesting. Mind if I pull up a chair and watch? :)
-
Thanks, Folks...
It looks like a nice kit and I never knew it even existed! I'll make mine the Italian version in the box. I think that will be nice and colorful.
More soon and thanks for looking...Dan

I have this kit so i'll pull a seat up to.

I really like the very early planes, I'm looking forward to following this :)

Since Eduard is in the middle of their "1/72nd Scale Revolution", and in no small part thanks to Vladimir Sulc I am sure (thank you sir!), and since they're reissued their Junkers kit, maybe we have a chance at seeing this reissued along with their Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter kits which I think are better than the Toko/Eastern Express kits. OTOH, my spidey-sense tells me that since these were early efforts, they may have been made with the old molds which don't hold up like the ones they've been using the last 10-15 years.
Hope springs eternal though.
Meanwhile . . . back on the farm . . . I used to have some build notes from someone regarding this kit, it's faults, etc. I'll try to dig through my files, etc.
Warren
PS: I've thought to sell mine, but just can't bear to part with it since I figure no one else will ever kit it again.
-
Popcorn at the ready and looking forward to some tips! I have both this and the 1 1/2 Strutter in my stash......
Ian

cool kit, i want to get one just because it the only voisin 3 injection molded kit.theres a few resin and vacform versions though. anyway will be checking in as well to see how the kit parts look. dont like the photoetch booms idea either dont blame you. lastly those appear to be french markings on the bix cover not italian. does the kit have italian version decals as well?

Yes.

Thanks, everyone. Seems like lots of folks want to see this one built so here we go!
So far, everything is going well if you are patient. Especially with the photoetch. It all fits, though, so someone planned this very well! Parts placement for some things is little vague so I think I might need to add/subtract/move things around a bit...especially on the bottom. The interior will have a few bits added as it's very visible in the finished model, but the parts were just painted "as is" (so far) and look nice.
Here is the tub together with a bit of filler and lots of little bits added. It's delicate which means I should put the wheels on soon to elevate the whole thing off the ground! ;)

All in all, a good start on what I hope will continue to be a really fun kit!
Thanks for looking,
Dan

Fantastic start Dan!
I look forward to see the Italian colours shining on your model!

nice job dan.

Awesome start, and fast also!

Thanks, everyone! I did a bit more work last night. It took the most time to get the flash off of the delicate parts, but here it is on its legs!
I could've substituted some thin brass for the landing gear, but I'm trying to use the kit parts when possible. Looks pretty ok. If I REALLY hate it in a week, I'll cut them off and add the brass...
Also started putting the little resin engine together. More tonight!
Dan

Already it is starting to look like a Voisin, great work so far Dan.

Very good update Dan.

All,
I tried my hand at the gun, beginning the mount and the engine all with bits of PE. I only managed to mess up the front legs on the gun mount...which is easy to fix. The mount isn't glued in but just sitting there for show. I used some lead foil for the ammo bag. I also note that the little PE rods on the engine are not quite long enough to reach the rocker arms. This is likely me not putting the cylinders in correctly. :-[ I think I'll make those out of stretched sprue. This is also my first attempts at resin.
All in all, looks pretty neat and I'm having lots of fun with this little kit.
Thanks for looking!
Dan

it seems to be a nice kit.

Looking great Dan!
Warren

Awesome work.

This is looking really cool, you are dong a very good job of this kit so far and your work is so neat and clean.
Des.

Thanks for the looks and comments, everyone. They really help. And a special thanks to Antonio who sent me some great shots of this beast. It turns out that the plane I'm modeling had covers on the wheels, a different gun set up and no fairings on the landing gear legs! :-[ Trouble is, I like the spoke wheels etc. and the gun with the side tray of ammo just screams "cool". So I'm saying it was having some maintenance and experimenting with armaments! ;)
Here is is with my custom mix. I like the color though I'm not sure how accurate it is. I have a feeling that the Italian planes were not stark white. I've seen Nieuports and SPADS that are cream/yellow/linen in color and they look great with the green and red markings...so this is my interpretation!
You can also see I made the spoke wheels, started painting the engine and the bottom of the wing surfaces. I made brown colored pencil lines along ribs so you can see them a bit. Can't wait to put the markings on. Then some weathering and then start careful assembly!
Wish me luck...Dan

Hi Dan,
here is a short recap of wht I found reading some documentation: by the end of may 1915 the Italian army air service got 12 Voisins III from France (6 with a Salmson 140hp and 6 without engine).
In the meantime SIT (an Italian aircraft production industry) acquired the licence from the French company.
Aquila Italiana, a mechanic industry acquired the licence from Salmson to produce their 140hp engine.
In June 1915, 2 Voisin Squadrons were created:
16 Squadriglia (4 planes s/n 377 379 380 381)
17 Squadriglia (5 planes s/n 585 586 587 588 590)
In early August the two squadriglie were renamed respectively 5 and 7.
On 15 April 1916 they were renamed again respectively as 25 and 26.
Most of the early photographs of 7 squadriglia (including the photo quoted by Dan) show an overall very light shade that can be according to my interpretation off white or a slightly yellowish shade of white if the first lot of planes came from France, so to me your interpretation of the yellowish shade appears a bit too "yellow".
The 589 according to the records quoted by Paolo Varriale in WD 135 was a French built machine.
Moreover there is the photo showing clearly the VII Squadriglia marking.
There are photos showing planes from those Squadriglie with and without fairings around the shock absorber springs on the 4 wheels so I imagine they were moveable and could be on or off for different reasons.
The Italian built Voisins (as the WD says) were mainly of the V type (only 7 belong to the III series), they were probably in natural dark metal finish. The photo of the 589 shows a radial engine (could be the original Salmson) but the SIT production is portrayed on the WD 135 carying a 6 cylinders inline engine (Isotta Fraschini) and a nourrice in the middle of the upper wing... There is just one picture that shows V1299 with that outfit.
Another interesting feature the some Italian built Voisins show in the pictures (not for the 589 picture I shared with Dan) is a second machine gun mounted on top of the upper wing where the two radiators converge. It is always a 9 mm twin barrel Fiat Revelli MG.
The WD 135 is fantastic and if you're interested in Voisins it's a "must have"!
Ciao
Antonio

Wonderful painting Dan.

Martin
-
Thanks Martin and Antonio!
I do agree with you that I'm too yellow...I'm hoping that when I do some fading and weathering, it's knocked back a bit. We'll see what happens.
Thanks so much for that recap. Super helpful and I sincerely appreciate your help since I know almost nothing about Voisin 3s and even less about those in Italian service.
Cheers!
Dan
-
All,
I got this guy detail painted a bit. It still needs the radiators (which I haven't quite figured out how to add!)and all the rigging along with some weathering.
Only huge mistake was the right hand fuselage side decal is in the wrong place...I put levers on the side near the cockpit and that's just where the Squadriglia is supposed to go. I tried to remove the controls, but they were bending, so I just repositioned the decals. :-[ Oh, well. The decals still look cool, especially against the light color. Now I need to find some bright green paint so I can paint the bottom tips of the wings etc. This will look really nice when all rigged!
This color is still a bit yellow, but I notice that the picture really looks more yellow than the real thing. I do think it will look better with some tweaking.
Thanks for looking! ;)

Dan it's a beauty!

Beautiful work Dan. What's going on with the engine? Is is supposed to be that brassy color?

I can't believe I missed so much of this thread. You're doing a magnificent job on one of my favorites. I just wish there was a Voisin 3 in 1/48 scale.

Beautiful work Dan, the paint colour looks right to my eyes and the decals are excellent, this is shaping up to be a real stunner.
Des.
-
Thanks, Everyone! It's fun to build so far.
Warren: From what I've seen, the answer is yes on the cylinders. I'm not sure if they were all this way, but I think this is correct.
Really looks odd to me, though!
Cheers,
Dan
-
My scratch built Voisin had a Salmson water cooled radial engine (not a rotary) hence the copper cooling jacket around each cylinder, so your colours are correct.
Des.
-
Modelling at its highest level. What a gem of the trolley. Looks great even without the wings!
-
OK, thanks! While I've had the kit in the stash for some time, I've not done any research on this a/c. Thanks for explaining that it had cooling jackets around the cylinders. Dan, you're right, they do look really odd, don't they?
Warren
-
All,
I skinned to tops of the wings and they look ok. I couldn't wait to put some markings on since those colors really pop against the light background.
I also started fitting the bottom wing. Looking less like a baby buggy now! ;D
More later,
Dan

Beautiful!
RAGIII

Nice! It looks a lot less yellow in that pic too!
Ian

Wonderful!

A very stunning looking model Dan, the colours and decals really stand out, great to see the wings starting to be fitted.
Des.
-
WOW Dan, you're making a little jewel!
-
Thanks, Folks...the encouragement makes the impending rigging worth while! ::) Actually, I miss the rigging. The Junkers J.1 was cool but it seemed blasphemy to not have any rigging at all!
Really starting to look the part. It will be pretty sturdy too (and straight). I have several examples of bombers from British and German stables. Now I finally have a French one on the move.
So far, the only "iffy" part has been the strut holes don't line up making the interplanes canted out on the top wing if I use the holes. I'm just using those in the bottom and moving them to the vertical on the bottom surface of the top wing. They look fine.
I'm not sure if this was the kit or the former owner drilling and me just assuming things were correct. Either way, it's on the mend.
More soon and thanks for looking...Dan
-
What a difference the top wing makes, a really nice looking model Dan.
Des.
-
Looks super with the upper wing mounted! Very nicely done to date!
RAGIII
-
That makes a big difference! Starting to look the part now....
Ian
-
great looking build iyou are making me want this kit.
-
It Looks wonderful.
Cheers
Martin
-
All,
Here it is so far. I attached most of the rigging I can make out to the appropriate places. I know there are some rigging points I'm missing, but it's hard to find all the places it's rigged. I also suspect that there are some variations out there too. So...this is my interpretation of a "standard". I'll add some more as I discover what I've missed! ;D
(http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee260/smithdr/smithdr011/DSCN1448_zpsfjhtb5r3.jpg)
Now I'll start making the booms out of brass tube and solder. I'll use the photoetch as patterns. Based on how nicely things have actually fit on this guy, I don't anticipate too many issues ;) Really, only the holes in the interplanes didn't line up.
Thanks for looking. It will be nice to have this one and the AEG done and side-by-side. This is a really pretty little machine.
Cheers,
Dan

Nicely done! I believe the Voisin III had cross bracing under each wing also. ie from the top of the front left strut, to the top of the rear right strut, etc....
Ian
-
Thanks, all...I think you are right, Ian. I only noticed that after things were well under way, so I'm trying to figure out if I can add them as an after thought... :-[ :-[ ::) ::)
We'll see if I get the courage to do so.
Cheers,

Great work Dan! Did you use HSP for the rigging or mono-filament of some kind?

Beautiful, Dan! Although not in my scale, you've got me giving this kit some serious consideration.

What a beauty!

All,
In prep for making new booms, I put the photoetch into the copier so I'd have patterns to cut and solder on. Just for giggles, I then cut out the "unusable" (my assumption) photoetch and folded it. It went ok and then...I put it on the wings/tub. Imagine my surprise! It's straight, clean, looks nice, isn't bent...I can't believe it! If it wasn't for the flatness of the booms and the rigging wires looking too flat/thick as well, this would actually work! It's not too flimsy...I am so surprised. My wife, wisely, advised me to save the whole thing in case my new booms bomb!
I will never bad-mouth something that is new to me or that I don't fully understand again. In a pinch, this would work just fine. I think this speaks volumes for a well-engineered kit. Those of you like Przemol who are photoetch geniuses, now I see why...
Oh, how the high and mighty have fallen... ;D
Cheers,
Dan

Beautiful job with the tail booms Dan.

Well . . . . imagine that. 8) ::) ;) ;) ;) Who knew that Vladimir Sulc and those other guys at Eduard knew what they were doing when it came to designing p/e??? ::) ;)
Seriously, it looks great so far Dan, AND you've got a wise woman there too. (Hint: if you want another good early Eduard/Flashback kit in 1/72nd, get a hold of their Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter, it's a gem. [I've got a stash, shhhhhh!]

Really nice booms. Am I correct in that these are the PE,or are these the ones you made from scratch? Either way they look great!
RAGIII
PE. I'll start making my scratch ones today. Now I just hope they fit as well as the kit examples.
Sorry guys...I'm just used to differently sized fuselage halves or short-shot wings and struts that are too short. So yes...I'm still surprised that this thing fits like a fine watch. :o ;)
More soon!
Dan
-
Dan, could you keep dipping the PE booms in paint until they thicken up???? Just a thought.
-
Dan, are you going to make the booms out of brass tube? If so, what are you going to use to "form" or squish them?
This is a beautiful build, as are all of the ones I've seen you post.
Warren
-
Thumbs and Warren...
I bet if I just sprayed with primer a few times, that might make things look a bit more 3-D. In terms of the brass booms, I was just going to use thin brass rod. The verticles could be rod that I streamline with some paper shrouds (I've done that on my scratch Fe2b with some success). We'll see what happens!
Thanks to everyone for the interest and suggestions. I do think I need to go out and find that Flashback 1.5 Strutter :D
Dan

Very great work Dan.

Whatever method you use for the booms I'm sure that they are going to look fantastic, just like the rest of the model.

All,
I got this soldered together, attached to the wings/tub and you can see the tails on just for show. Using the etch as a template worked a treat.

Lots of rigging to go, but there is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel. Tomorrow I'll rig some more and attach the tails for certain.
Thanks for looking!
P.S. I forget who said it, but she is now a tail sitter!
Dan

Fantastic job with the soldering of the booms Dan. My scratch built 1:32 Voisin ended up being a tail sitter as well, there is nowhere up front to place weights ???

Wonderful job Dan,wow! By the way your building speed would make Squiffy proud! ;)

Ian
Ha, ha! It is JUST sitting. If there is a disturbance in the Force, she dips back. So I have done nothing with it. I have not filled in the little window under the nose and may be able to shove a dark piece of weight in there, but I do still need to do some tail parts and rigging back there, so I suspect she'll be on her tail soon! :-\
Thanks to you all for commenting. My last post should be soon and show her done! Happy 2016...
