Title: DFW C.V (Av) 287/18
Post by: stefanbuss on November 13, 2014, 01:32:22 AM
Friends,

following my last Roden kits, I wanted to built something "easier", for a change. The kit itself is well known (that's the reason why I decided to skip the screenshot of the box).

The aircraft I want to build is the "butterfly" scheme, that will be an interesting challenge due to the huge amount of weathering needed.(http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/927585/6465653436333435.jpg)

The interior is nearly finished:
As you know, the pilot used to sit on the fuel tank, with the reserve tank in his back. A solution I wouldn't have liked too much. Using the hairspray-technique, I tried to replicate scratches (and someday I will be able to make photos that would show the areas I am talking about in sufficient quality)

Anyway. Here is the pilot's office:

The tiny amount of work still to be done , aka the observer's office:
Still some items to paint. I really like the Eisfeld flare pistol.

This is the main actor (as always, I will try to tell a story):

And this is the reason, why I am progressing very slowly: My assistents have to check every single step. Very gelpful, all three of them.

edit: broken link to observer's office fixed.

Nice work. I love the dog's polka dot bandana. I have to agree with andyw's comment regarding cats and models. I think cats view models as irresistible cat toys.

Very nice start, Stefan.  The colour scheme you chose will look great.
I really like what you have done with the cockpit.  Nice wood work!
You can't help but like dog and his bandana.  I'm sure your assistants

i know, and i want to try to show something you left away on your build (radiator shutter linkage). Did you have problems in attaching the lower button part (the one where you could drill a large hole for the large camera, if you dared to, L13 i think)?

The cats refuse to go away - they are not too scared of the little doggie.

So,

the fuselage is closed and I have to report something weird:

1. I have the impression that the instructions were finished in a rush (or maybe I was expecting too much after tackling the Roden kits) - in the cockpit there are things not mentioned, when they should be. On the instrument panel there is a switch to be added (at least Des did so, and I followed duly) - the opening for that switch is already drilled out, but not mentioned. Not a major issue, but not the only one (albeit the only one that comes to my mind just now, unfortunately)

2. In my kit the after cabane struts were broken on the sprues. That's the same issue that Bertl already reported (in my case the landing gear was okay). I think it may be an issue of fitting too many parts into that box. As you all know, that box is really cramped. It could be fixed, but was surprising.

3. The lower bottom part (L13), that is to be glued between the two fuselage halves, is 1mm too long. That is not a mistake coming from some kind of shitty modelling from my side, as the cutout for L13 is already prepared on the fuselage parts. You are supposed to simply glue L13 into the opening. Again, not a major issue, but again a surprise.

As of today, I was too lazy for taking photos. There isn't so much to be seen, anyway.

Stefan

I am a little bit astonished to read about this shortcommings regarding the instructions. Never thought to find these problems with WNW Kits.

Great work so far Stefan.

I will check it out today and see what the radiator shutter linkage is that I missed, off hand I can't remember.

As far as the Wingnut instructions are concerned, I have built quite a lot of their kits and every one of them has had some sort of issue with the instructions, albeit only minor errors but errors all the same.

I thought it was just my newness to kits like this so am somewhat relieved to hear this is not my imagination. I find that there is so much going on in the instructions with the coloring and 3-D aspects, yet there seem to be steps simply left out. Like, "when was I supposed to have applied that part?"

Michael
Title: Re: DFW C.V (Av) 287/18
Post by: Des on November 19, 2014, 12:49:34 PM
It's quite a common occurance in the Wingnut instructions, they tend to give instructions for certain aspects of the build but way out of sequence to the rest of the build, very confusing, part numbers are sometimes given incorrectly for certain parts and some assembly instructions are missed all together, all minor issues but annoying. The reason I didn't attach the radiator shutter cables is because the instructions did not give clear evidence of where the cables attach to the radiator.

Great work so far Stefan. This build of yours may be a guide for me soon as I am tempted to get me one of these for Christmas.

Regarding the incomplete instructions in WNW kits, I can only confirm this. If you happen to build an Albie or a Pfalz you will see the sockets in the dashboard for fuel switches, with nice holes for them. But the switches themselves are not in the kit, though they are clearly illustrated in the accompanying photos. From my Fee build I remember several issues of this kind related to the Beardmore engine - missing pipes and not too tiny!
However, I take those as an advantage, almost. Adding these bits from scratch brings more modelling value to your build, and finding them in the photos attached or found in other sources - even more so. After all, it is modelling not Lego bricks assembly, isn't it? Sometimes I have a feeling, they guys at WNW play with us or even bet among themselves, who of us WNW freaks finds more pieces omitted on purpose by them in their, nevertheless, spectacular products! ;)

Just a small update - fuselage and wings are painted, but have to dry (for a rather long time, as we have only 1°Celsius in the room that I have to use for painting (fumes etc., you know)), so no photos yet.

Only this one:
The exhaust, worn and (a bit) rusty.

And monsewer le piloteur

Don't worry, it's only one pilot - a marvellous Kellerkind figure.

For some kind of change I can report some progress (surprise, surprise!)

This is the kit's weak point: The engine, taken from the J.1-kit. It's easy to see the progress WNW has made since 2009, comparing he engine parts with the rest of that kit.
With hindsight I shoulkd have chased my assistent out of the hobby room and dusted off all those cat-hairs. Sorry...

The upper wing (lower side is supposed to be CDL)

Fuselage

The paintjob looks spectacularly overdone and failed (especially the ribs), but, I am strictly following the aircraft's photos in WNW's instructions. (What an excuse.) The Iron Crosses were crudely overpainted with some kind of dark green paint - this I did with a brush (as per original).

Friends,

following alenghty phase of surgeries and recuperation times (to get fit enough for the next surgery), I recovered enough to spend some time with my DFW. Rather hard if you are only able to sit at the modelling bench for some minutes per day...

The gunner is a figure by Wings (from the LVG set), the anemometer the Gaspatch one.

The propellor was coloured with pencils and will receive a spinner cab later on.

Now it's time for the next break in modelling, for some time, unfortunately. If I will ever finish the fuselage's rigging, the weathering will begin. WNW's photos show a very much used and worn aircraft. Many opportunities to mess everything up.

Regards,
Stefan

Friends,

after a break of nearly 10 months work has restarted (Hey, Bo, you are not the only one!) with repairing the undercarriage's rigging, which broke while storing the kit away last year
(http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/927585/6435343638313837.jpg)
The generator has been connected to the interior as well.

Completing the tail's rigging will be next
(http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/927585/3137643363303231.jpg)
but this will take time. My dexterity has worsened last year (this is now more or less on par with my bad eyesight), which makes it very very hard to insert the rigging into those poly tubes. But Bertl's way of showing those splices is much more impressive than using brass tubing, which means I do have to preserve...

Small progress, I know, and the lack of speed is depressing. I will do my best to speed up.

Stefan

Nice progress Stefan.

A little hint with the polyimide tubing -- run a .25mm (or .30mm depending on tubing size) drill bit thru your little sleeve after you've cut it. Makes it much easier to thread.

Weathering the DFW has begun
(http://foto.arcor-online.net/palb/alben/85/927585/3833323637363937.jpg)

I am going for an airframe that had been standing outside for too long. The photos of the aircraft after capture show a rather bleached paintjob, covered with smears on the tail, bad ribtape-repairjobs and a large amount of degradation/abuse.

Lower left wing has a combination of streaks, "hairspray method" (degradation of reinforced area near wingroot) and sponge application for tread marks on the wing area.

Your weathering is looking terrific! Is that an oil dot weathering method?

Sir, yes Sir!  It's meant to break the monotony of those large areas, and it works quite well. I hope it can still be seen after the application of a clear cote, which is the next step to be done. 8)

Poor neglected, abused DFW! :'(
Very well done, fine technique. I totally agree in breaking the monotony of larger aeras of one single color by usinf filters, washes and so on.

Looks great, what you are showing us. I like the dotted scarf of the Pilot.

The top wing is finished. One of the photos in WNW's instructions shows the wing, reflecting sunlight - apart from the overpainted crosses, those being flat. The effect that I wanted to achieve didn't come out as expected, as the Vallejo "satin varnish" I used for the wing turned out to be as flat as the flat coat I used for the crosses.

Too bad.

Rigging has begun - and I hate every single minute of it!  :-[

Flat or satin, your build is looking great regardless.

Looks great Stefan. Your subtle rib tape weathering is excellent. The painting and decaling is outstanding.

Thank you, friends.

Rigging has come to a sudden end, though, as i ran out of drill bits and have to wait for resupply to arrive.  :-[

She's finished. Better (and more) pictures, including crew and groundwork, to follow in due time. Not my best work, but I am happy that I succeeded. As usual most of my detail work inside is hidden now (I had expected more would be visible, even with the top wing on. I could have saved a lot of time - but that is with 10/10 hindsight).

Now you have inspired me to go ahead and buy one of these.  I really like your
