I've decided to take a break from the Wingnut Wings "roll" I've been on of late and take on a challenge with more opportunity for some improvisation and a few more Scratch Built additions. Although this Kit would, IMHO, produce a very nice OOB Build I hope to enhance the cockpit and a few other areas to take her beyond the "Nice" category.
With the Superscale After Market Decals in hand I'll be finishing the aircraft as SN #6177 as flown by 1st Lt. Quentin Roosevelt of the AEF's 95th Aero Squadron at Gengoult, France in June of 1918.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3087.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3087.jpg.html)
References for the Build will be as pictured, mainly however the Windsock Datafile.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3083.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3083.jpg.html)
I've only just started the project; the engine components and some of the cockpit components have been cleaned up in preparation for painting and assembly. Study of some of the excellent cockpit views in the datafile indicate that the wooden panels around the cockpit were constructed, like the tail assembly, with strips of wood laminated to a second layer of strips. I've started a rough shell to represent that using Evergreen .13mm (.005 inches) thick sheet styrene.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3090.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3090.jpg.html)
........and here a closer view of the wood shell for the interior.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3089.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3089.jpg.html)
This will be a slow start as several of the critical items are "on order". I'm waiting for a resin "Peach Basket" seat from Aviattic , Gaspatch Vickers Guns, and some tiny brass nuts from RB Motion for the rigging........ inspiration from Dal Gavan's build of the same Model here.
I've always really liked the look of this aircraft. Despite being outclassed by much better aircraft the American Pilots were able to "hold the fort" with their Ni 28's until they got their Spads. Seeing some of the spectacular Builds here, particularly by our Forum Members Dal and Patrick in the past year, provided the inspiration to purchase the Kit and "get at her"!
I'm looking forward to this one! 8)

So am I Lance! It's always great to look over your shoulder during your builds. And you always choose subjects with historical interest, which just adds to the fun.
Bonne Chance!

Great to see you tackle the Roden kit Lance, from all reports it is a pretty good kit and in your very capable hands it will be a gem, looking forward to following the build.

Lance,
I am certainly looking forward to your build! I am sure it will turn out as superb as all of your other builds have! Who knows, you may tempt me to get another and build a second!

As a Nieuport fan, I am really looking forward to your build, Lance!
With your talents, the aeroplane will be a stunner. Onward and upward, my friend!

This wll e an interesting topic to follow :) I'm sure the end result will be spectacular and I would like to see Aviattics seat in action ;

Hey Gents, Thanks for the comments and encouragement.
I had posted a question about this aircraft in WW1 Aircraft Information/Questions, I had very little detailed info and couldn't make sense of the seeming "overlap" between Roosevelt's Black 14 (#6177) and Taylor's Red 14 (#6222) Bud (Coyotemagic) has recommended a back issue of Over the Front with a good article on Quentin Roosevelt which I have ordered and which should add a lot of accurate historical perspective to this thread.

Hi Lance,

Well Lance this build is the final push I needed. Been looking at buying one for the past month and now its on order. Looking forward to following your build and getting pointers. The plastruct sheet, is that pre grooved or did you score it yourself?

I'm really looking forward to following this build, Lance. I was going to say good luck, but with modelling skills like yours, luck won't come into it.
Best wishes

I am at one with the others - this is going to be a really good build to watch, so I will be following this with great interest.

Hello, Lance -
You've chosen one of Roden's better kits in this scale - it actually goes together really well.
Good luck with your build, I will follow with interest.

Dave

Nice i hope the seat fits now the first one i made on scale was to large had to make adjustments on the new one did
Ron

Many thanks for all the nice words of encouragement; if I "pooch" the assembly in the absence of WNW engineered struts and fittings there won't be a hole deep enough for me to hide in! :-[ On the other hand, this just might be the ultimate test of my cherished Aeroclub Bi-Plane Assembly Jig. Just about ready to start some paint spraying; I must admit that, as pretty as this Kit is, the clean up is something we all forget about when working with WNW products. In all fairness this Kit's been around a while, and the mold is probably getting a little "loose".
Cheers,
Lance

Great work James! Hope you got a decent price on it. The Sheet for the cockpit wood work is plain; I grooved it with a fairly worn #11 Blade.
Have you decided on markings yet?

Ron & Richard,
I am really looking forward to the seat, it looks excellent on the Site. If I read your comment correctly, Richard, I'll be very pleased to try the cowling, that's very kind of you!

Not too bad a price. And I also have Super Scale International MS320244 decals coming. 2nd Lt. Ralph O'Neill 147 Aero Sqn. Now to get a gun from Gaspatch, a seat and I guess a cowl from Aviattic, and whatever else I can copy from you lol. But first things first a Fokker, Rumpler and Snipe to finish. At least that gives time to aquire more refs and stuff :)
James

This is going to be a real treat following along on this one :)
Terri

James,
Nice scheme, it's the one of three available that I didn't get, and probably the most unique. I'd be very interested in what you can confirm on the type of Lewis Guns to mount on this beast; I was going to go with the Colt Version but ended up ordering the British Hyland with the Type E loading handle, seemed to look the closest to what photos I had.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Hi Lance - one of my favourite planes and one of the greatest stories of WW1 aviation .....your peach basket seat, an improved version of Ron Kootjes earlier version, is on its way along with a cowling which I'll be marketing soon - a vast improvement over the kit one...
This'll be worth watching for sure!
Regards, Richard
I assume Ron has corrected the fit issue I encountered with the original. I am glad to hear that this correctable, but somewhat frustrating issue has been resolved. I also like the idea of the cowling... I am so... tempted to get another and try to improve on mine. Lance you are going to have a blast with this kit as it really does build up nicely. I am sure whatever version of the Vickers you chose will be a better representation than the original kit 8)
RAGIII
-
Hi Lance:
This is one of Roden's better if not best kit. I built it early on and really enjoyed it and did it in Roosevelts markings. The stripes on the cowling can be a tad tricky to get even. Great model. Looking forward to seeing you work through the build.

Everyone seems to see this as a pretty good Kit, and I agree thus far. It's a very simple construction but, other then lack of detail on the smaller parts, a nice portrayal of the aircraft. I think it'll build up quite nicely, hopefully comparable to some of the excellent Builds you Folks have displayed here!
Cheers,
Lance
-
This one will be followed closely and I am already expecting a very instructive built-process. (Is this proper english? Nevermind)
Stefan
-
Thanks Stefan, I'll try to keep it interesting! ;)
Made a bit of progress despite the effects a minor disaster here; we had a pipe leak in the ceiling of our downstairs, water damage to the walls and flooring but thankfully minimal damage to the contents of the room. (Spare bedroom) All is in hand with the Insurance and repair people, now it's just the inconvenience of all the work being done over the next several weeks. I feel very fortunate that, at this stage , it appears that the damage is limited to just the one room!
So, in my few spare moments I completed the engine. This aircraft had the 160HP Gnome Monosoupape 9N Rotary installed. The Kits engine is very "plain" in appearance and has a few errors that stand out. Although the engine is almost totally concealed by the cowling I elected to detail it a bit. First, a complete clean up of the parts was required, lots of flash and mold marks being removed. A second Spark Plug (Plain plastic sprue) had to be added to each cylinder to match the twin plugs of the original and different shades of Alclad II Metal Paint were used. Once assembled I added the electrical wires to the plugs to complete the job. After fiddling with first copper wire, then stainless guitar strings, I elected to use EZ Line for the wires which worked very well. A wash of very thin Model Master Semi Gloss Black added some "grungy oil effect" with some shading effect as well and she was done.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3094.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3094.jpg.html)

The only other thing I'd consider doing different in retrospect is replacing the lifter rods. they are a little thick even after considerable shaving while cleaning them up, For the tiny bit that is visible, however, I'm quite pleased with the results. Now it's on to module #2, the cockpit.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Hello Lance:
Engine looks pretty darned good Lance. The paint work will certainly add some interest to the front end. I like using EZ line for plug leads as well as it has the desired effect. Bummer about your basement. I have had simliar experiences here in the great upper midwest and it is quite unsettling. Hope all turns out well for you and you can continue on with minimal disruptions.

Your Engine looks terrific. Exceptional painting!

Excellent job on the engine, Lance. The sprue sparkplug and the easyline
worked a treat. Good to hear that the leak damage is being looked after. Never
rains but it pours, eh? Looking forward to the next updates when you are
back at the bench. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Brilliant work on the engine, Lance! Really looking forward to following along.

Happy to hear about your desaster recovery. Very convincing work on the engine.
I am eagerly waiting for your works on the cockpit.
Stefan

Hi Lance.
I really like the innovative use of EZ line on the engine - and I'm glad to hear that the leak and water damage are being sorted.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Thanks for all the comments; not getting much done right now with all the comings and goings of the "Demolition and Cleanup" crew. :( Very disruptive to the routine here and the repairs/rebuild have yet to start. I'm hoping to get the cockpit module together and then install the seat once it turns up in the mail. I'll keep posting mini updates.
Cheers, ::)
Lance
-
If you put fuel into that engine will it start up? It looks as though it would!!
Sorry to hear about the leak - water is wonderful stuff but it has to be in the right place! Hope all gets sorted out sooner rather than later and that you can maintain your sanity while the repairs are carried out.
-
Thanks for the well wishes LM. As much as it's a large pain in the posterior this could have been a lot worse, we were very lucky to discover it before more of the downstairs was destroyed, and the impact on "contents" was minimal. As for this Nieuport, I'll just continue to work along as the chaos allows! :P ::)
Cheers,
Lance
-
Looking good Lance as always - your simulation of planking???(don`t know how to call it properly) inside the fuselage is something to follow!
-
Real time progress, though very slow, has got well ahead of this Build Log. Time for an update .............
Since no locating pins are molded into the fuselage I added a little extra by way of rough brackets to aid with alignment and strengthen the final assembly.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3121.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3121.jpg.html)
The ailerons have been removed from the lower wing and steel pins installed.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3123.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3123.jpg.html)
The Aviattic (Ron Kootje) "peach basket" seat well worth waiting for as supplied and ready to install. Not seen, the cushion supplied with it, I'll catch that with a shot or two of the seat with the belts installed.
Before.........
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3126.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3126.jpg.html)
and after...............
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3158.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3158.jpg.html)
Once assured that the cockpit module would fit (I ultimately had to remove a portion of the aft circular frame to allow it to slide into the closed fuselage) the fuselage was closed, filled, lower wing installed,
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3156.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3156.jpg.html)
and then sanded down to a "ready for paint" state.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3148.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3148.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3157.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3157.jpg.html)
The lower wing attachment was a little "rough" but easily remedied with several applications of putty, in this case Squadron "Green Stuff" filler.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3154.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3154.jpg.html)
I've since completed the pre shading, this had to be done in two sessions as I forgot the small "half ribs" on the lower leading edge of the bottom wing (?!?!) first attempt. The ailerons were done as well, the tailplane, being veneer covered was left as is. I'm hoping to get away with pre-shading only on this one as the references I have show generally clean looking machines and not a lot of rib detail on the wings.
The lower wing joints filled and finished.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3172.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3172.jpg.html)
The upper fuselage....
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3173.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3173.jpg.html)
and some of the completed pre-shading.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3174.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3174.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3176.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3176.jpg.html)
The Aviattic sample cowling was cleaned up to a finished state and, at this point, will be the one of choice as it has the rivet line molded to the front portion, something missing on the Kit version as can be seen here.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3145.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3145.jpg.html)
The seat has been completed with bits and pieces of HGW Seat Belts from the spares box and I'll include a few closeups in the next update. Almost time to start mixing some of those off the wall French Cam. Colours! ;)
Cheers,
Lance

Outstanding update, Lance! She's coming along beautifully. The cockpit and shading look fantastic.

Looking really great - do you just use a thinned black for the preshade?
Also - Aviattic Cowling? Didnt know they did one for the N28?
-
Your N.28 looks really fantastic, Lance. The warmth of the interior wood grain appears to be consistent with the tones used in French aircraft, nice work on the interior skin. I have this one in my stash as well, so I'm glad I haven't built it yet. I already see several things in your build that I wouldn't have thought of which I may attempt to emulate when the time comes. Keep up the good work!

Looking really nice. I have the 1/48th almost done. The locating pins for the struts are a major PITA though.

Looking really good Lance. Cant wait till I can start mine after seeing this.

Great update Lance, she is look excellent, good idea with the tabs to assist with fuselage halves aligning correctly.

Your motoring right long with this one Lance . I like the warn honey shade on the seat , will contrast very nicely with the surrounding frame work !

Petrov 27,
The pre-shade is a mix of 3 parts Model Master Aircraft Interior Black to 1 part Light Gull Grey Enamels. The Aviattic Cowling was a free trial from Richard to try out (from a Kit they are working on) I don't feel I'm giving away any secrets as Richard mentioned it on this Blog back on the first or second page. It fits beautifully. :)

Hello Lance:
Great update. Looking forward to seeing you progress on this one. I almost forgot about this one. Glad to see it back on the bench and you making progress. One of my favorites. I may have to pop for the Aviattic Cowling. A vast improvement over the kit one. Well maybe not vast but an improvement none the less. I think this is one of Roden's best kits.

Thanks all, for looking in and for the positive feedback. It's been slow, hopefully I can stimulate a little faster progress here as I 'm really "itching" to get started on the D.VII Group Build Project. :)

I somehow missed your update on the engine Lance. Sorry about that, but I've reset the notify feature again so hopefully that'll do the trick. Your engine looks like the real deal. I'm going to have to track down some Alclad as you're achieving stellar results with it.
Nice work with the pre-shading too. You're exercising much better control with your airbrush than I do in that regard. What do you set your air pressure at for this task?
Keep up the good work!

I use the standard 18-20 psi Chris, with the colour at nearly zero. As for the Alclad, magnificent product but a little hard on the bank account! Ensure you get and use one of their primers; I seem to use the "Grey Primer and Microfiller" the most.

Great progress, Lance. The woodwork is great. The use of the tabs to help
with lining up the fuselage is a super idea. The Nieuport is coming along
beautifully. Well done, my friend.

Hey, Lance!
Now that I'm back on the Forum I can get caught up a bit with other builds. This looks first rate, and I can only offer best wishes for another successful build as you progress. IMHO, the Aviattic seat and the cockpit side panelling really make a difference! ;D
-
Another brief update, some scrap PE from the spares pile was added to the 4 locations for the double rigging points on the fuselage before painting.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3177.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3177.jpg.html)
I mixed some of the colours, several were used as is as they matched the colour illustrations I had nicely. All were Tamiya Acrylics, a first for this old enamel fan. The bottom CDL portions were airbrushed with Tamiya Deck Tan XF55 which I noted a lot of you were using for CDL. I like the effect but may add some yellow in future. The Pre-shading shows through nicely.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3182.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3182.jpg.html)
The engine cowling got a couple of coats of white at the same time as the turtle decking received the Flight Commanders white top decking. The dust particles on the cowlings' 3 O'clock position were thankfully just laying on the surface, not in the paint, and wiped right off!
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3185.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3185.jpg.html)
After approximately 48 hours of drying time their followed a delicate masking job. The White chevron and undersides had to be completely protected for the application of the 5 colour camouflage on the upper and side surfaces. The acrylics were all thinned with laquer thinner for airbrush application. I elected to spray rather then hand brush to preserve the Pre-Shading. Colours were (all Tamiya):
Brown - XF64 Red Brown
Beige - XF59 Desert Yellow (this appears very "orange" in the photos but is a nice beige tone in real life.)
Green - XF26 Deep green
Light Green - 50/50 mix of XF67 NATO Green and XF3 Flat Yellow
Black - XF69 NATO Black
The foregoing had to be done in sequence from one side, masking with Post It Notes applied with no "relief" gave reasonably sharp demarcations between colours.

Next comes a coat of Future, some decaling, and a bit more work on the cockpit module before it gets slid into place. I also need to get some turnbuckle eyelets installed once the last over coat is applied; the holes have been pre drilled already.
Cheers,
Lance

Hello Lance:
I too like the colors and the way they turned out with the pre-shading. I am going to have to get one of Ron's cowls. Really nice. I like the addition of spare P.E. around the fuselage rigging holes. Nice touch and adds that little extra touch. Looking forward to your next update and seeing your progress. I have another one of these in the stash. One of these days. ;)

Man, she's a colourful bird! Lots of masking and colour changes on display here. She'll be a beauty when you're finished.
Are you thinning your Tamiya acrylics with their proprietary thinner or lacquer? I've switched over to lacquer in the last few years and find it works extremely well.

More progress, but this Kit is fighting me every step of the process. With the exception of the interplane struts all the decaling is complete. The striped pattern on the cowling proved a total nightmare, we came very close to a change in colour schemes! Lots of touch up to be done on those little devils! The rest of the decals behaved very well (the Squadron Superscale Set by Cartograph)

Here's the cowling, posed with blue tack, (excellent rendition by Aviattic) showing a fairly busy schedule of repair ahead! The landing gear template/jig is loose fitted in the background. It's ready for assembly and final painting tomorrow.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3213.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3213.jpg.html)
The amount of detail visible in the cockpit is pretty well limited to the seat (Ron Kootje through Aviattic, nicely done!) and HGW Belts, which I see need a bit of a haircut!
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3208.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3208.jpg.html)
All of the anchor points and loops for the rigging are complete with the exception of the two "doubles" per side which will have Gas Patch Turnbuckles (1:48 Scale) installed at the bottoms in the holes visible here.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3210.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3210.jpg.html)
After a few paint touch ups on the coaming and landing gear she'll be getting an overcoat of semi gloss clear; I've decided to do some post shading after all as the rib detail is so subtle it all but disappeared with painting, and the colours are too bright for my liking.
Not exactly ready for the Hall of Shame yet, but definitely a bigger challenge to complete well then the several Wingnut Products I've done of late!
Cheers,
Lance

In spite of the challenges, you seem to have mastered them, Lance. The decals look fantastic against that gorgeous paint job. Don't give up on this one, buddy. She's gonna be a stunner.
Cheers,

Despite the tough spots you encountered, it certainly looks like you will prevail over this Roden build. It looks really great even if you're compelled to beat up on the cowling some more. This one is going to be a stunner!
-
You have performed a magic act on this kit Lance, what you have achieved is amazing considering the challenges you faced. The paint scheme is brilliant and extremely well executed and the decals are awesome, the brilliant seat and the seat belts add those finishing touches, this is going to be a real show stopper when completed.
Des.

Looks awesome Lance. What a beaut.

Lance,
You are doing absolutely stellar work on the 28. The xheme is lovely! The Aviattic cowling looks awesome and the seat is a much better fit than I got with Rons original.
RAGIII
-
I can well imagine how tricky that cowling was to execute, but master it you did! I hate to repeat myself but this is turning out to be a very colourful bird and well worth all of the time, effort, and aggravation Lance. It sounds as though this a bit of a 'donkey' of a kit. ;D However, when she's finally finished, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you did a stellar job of it.
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks very much for the generous remarks, Guys. All said and done it's not a really horrible Kit however I've had to install pins in almost every join; hopefully it will all go together smoothly in the end. I'm looking forward to toning down the finish with a solid coat of S/G Clear and then getting some Post Shading and Weathering done. In fairness I suspect some of the problems encountered with the cowling decals stem from some very subtle differences between the kit and Aviattic versions. The latter seems a little "deeper" in profile however fits the model better then the original IMHO.
The rigging looms ominously on the horizon; I've no idea as yet of how I'm going to handle the Wooden Lathe "inserts" between the doubles in the inter plane section...............I've got Dal's article front and center and some more ideas in Dr. Tom Morgan's "Build-off" notes with Lance Krieg several years back in Windsock to get me going in hopefully the right direction.
More in a week or so.............(got to get going on the D.VII Group Build real soon!)
Cheers,
Lance

Sorry I have missed your latest updates, Lance -
Really looking good now - good luck for the rigging!

Hello Lance:
I think you have done outstanding work on this model to date. The stripes on the cowling are a bugger to get right and you managed to get them on and straight. I like your colors and think they look fine, however, a drop or two of sand in the dull coat can take away that brightness without changing the color.
Looking forward to seeing how you deal with the laths on the rigging.

Most impressive so far Lance , looking forward on the weathering :)
Terri
-
Wonderful job, Lance! The decals, especially the cowling stripes are first rate.
I can imagine the patience needed to get those right, but you have prevailed
beautifully. For a kit that fought you at every step, you have come up with a
stunner. I look forward to the finishing updates.
Cheers,

Hello Lance,
Sorry I am so late for a comment on your tremendous build of an a/c that I like so very much. You are making a real beauty of it my friend. I mention a few things. Very nice work on the evergreen sheets for the woodwork, an engine that is really superb (extremely well painted and detailed), you did a fantastic job on Ron’s (Aviatic) seat, looking very real, very nice camo painting and true colors, magnificent engine cowling and the decaling is perfect ( the cowling isn’t easy is it?). In one word a fantastic bild Lance!
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Patrick,
Thanks so much for the kind words, your timing is perfect as you have been much on my mind the past 48 hours. I had a horrible time with the cabanes, failed totally in fact despite installing pins and using my own jig in the process. I managed to remove them, clean them up, and then attempt a second time...........then recalled you had employed a unique Jig of your own design on your Build of this Kit. My sincere compliments Patrick, I replicated your Jig, put pins in both ends of the struts, installed them, and the upper wing fits like a glove and is in absolutely perfect alignment!
I'll be posting an update later today or tomorrow with suitable recognition of IFF 418's contributions to this Build; you certainly saved this one from a trip to the Hall of Shame!
Many Thanks......
Cheers,
Lance

A short Workbench Update to get this Log up to date. I'm now approaching the final assembly point of this project; lots of touch-ups done and more to do, pre-rigging in progress, and final details to add. The cross bracing was added to the under-cowl between the forward landing gear mounting points and then the Post Shading, which I originally planned to not do was started. The Pre-shading was all but lost in the bright colours and finish so I decided to add a little contrast and wear to the wing surfaces.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3221.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3221.jpg.html)
I used my usual Chalk Pastel method for the Post Shading, sealing the application with a light coat of Model Master Acryl Semi Gloss.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3236.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3236.jpg.html)

(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3247.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3247.jpg.html)

I then, as mentioned last entry, did a second attempt at getting the Cabanes properly installed, having failed miserably on the initial attempt. I used Patrick's Jig design (IFF 418) from his previous Build of the same Kit and it worked perfectly..............one of the reasons I like this Forum! Here's his simple but effective solution to the complete lack of engineering in the Kit design for upper wing mounting! My Thanks to Patrick for providing a grand solution to a challenging problem!
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3276.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3276.jpg.html)
With the Cabanes "pinned" and carefully aligned/mounted in the jig with Tamiya Tape the assembly was mounted and secured to the fuselage and then cemented in place with ultra thin CA, a more liberal application being added once the jig was removed.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3253.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3253.jpg.html)

The result was perfect, and the Cabanes were then rigged.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3271.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3271.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3275.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3275.jpg.html)
I also added the windshield, a bit of cleaning and touch up required here............ The kit supplied windshield is very "basic" to say the least!
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3277.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3277.jpg.html)
The guns were also installed at this stage. I elected to use the Kit Guns saving the GasPatch "Jewels" for another subject as this Build is not progressing nearly as nicely as I would like. The dust etc. is a bonus but will be cleaned up before the completion!
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3278.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3278.jpg.html)
Finally I did a bit of weathering to the undersides, photos to follow, and today it's onto the rigging and upper wing mounting, should be quite a day!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Man that post-shading sure turned out nicely Lance. You've really nailed that technique. While the kit may be fighting you all the way, you're doing a superb job with it. In my case though, I think I'll avoid it like the plague.
That's an interesting MG alignment I'm seeing here. It's definitely a new on me.
Is it strictly an alignment issue for the cabanes which causes all the grief in installation? By that I mean are there no good mounting points for them? Whatever the case, I'll bet it's a great relief that you've got the issue whipped.
Cheers,
Chris

You're doing great work, Lance ;)

I completely agree with Rick - this is a truly amazing build and most interesting to follow.

Hello Lance,
Thank you! So glad it turned out so nicely. Good to have mounted some pins on the struts, they certainly will be more stable then mine were. Your wing postshading is fabulous and the weathering outstanding. I think your are out of misery now. The rest will turn out quite easy for your outstanding craftmanship!
Well done!

Thanks All for your positive and encouraging comments. This one is trying my patience a little, so words such as yours are most welcome and keep the enjoyment factor in the "black"!
I have another update and photos before getting serious about the rigging and going final on this Build. First, the weathering completed two days back, which is mostly to the undersurfaces.

and now "True Confessions" time...........I rarely get through a Build without at least one "head up posterior" total Gaff, and this hopefully will suffice for this little project! I discovered that at some point I managed to drop the lower surface of the bottom wing into a puddle of Medium CA I had on a piece of tile. DOH!!!!!!! I've cleaned it up as best I could without lifting the paint and decals, given it a coat of Semi Gloss Acryl, and will now just pretend it's not there!
Looking pretty nasty........

and after the repairs.........

Since the completion of that nasty little episode the pre-rigging has been completed, upper wing mounted and all struts in place, and I'm ready to complete the rigging. I've got her perched on the assembly jig only to steady her for rigging.

And a couple of quick overall shots to complete the update......
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3301.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3301.jpg.html)

I'm really like how this is coming along Lance . Super job on the weathering as well ! Looking forward on the rigging , are you going to wrap the double wires ? I know your pain Lance , 99% of all my projects have mishaps and at least one cat hair ! You did well on the repair job :)

Many Thanks, all of you, for the continuing compliments and support. This Build has been a slight eye opener for me, we get spoiled by the near perfection of the excellent WNW Kits and it's a real challenge, at least for this old "F(*&(^t", to step back into basic modelling.
Terri, I will be wrapping the doubles, have Dal's Post at my side to help but still have no idea, really, how to pull this off. I also have Tom Morgan's 1:48 Build (with Lance Krieg's) in a back issue of Windsock to reference, a few ideas to try there as well. "It ain't over til it's over!!!"
This back issue was ordered back when I was gathering info for this Build, just arrived!? Great issue, being almost totally devoted to an excellent article on Quentin Roosevelt by Alan Toelle. Wonderful photos and a real tribute to the man.

So, next time I sit down at the bench it'll be Rigging Time..............wish me luck! ::)

Hello Lance:
Nice save on the CA incident! I think it looks pretty darned nice and motivates me to do another one. I know the travails one encounters on a kit that seems Gremlin layden. This is coming along nicely Lance, the colors sure match the cover of the "OTF".
Looking forward to seeing it in the completed section.

Mark, Rick,
Thanks for the encouragement, I'll freely admit to having reservations about this one, She's been a "bear" all the way!
Since the last update the wing rigging has been completed, not without lots of angst and drama. Broken eyelets and fittings popping off to a degree I could hardly believe but it's finally done. My new method of attaching lines to struts was a total failure, lots of lessons learned on this little journey!
Next on the list was to wrap or fill in the double wires with the trademark "lathe" supports. I had followed Dal Gavan's efforts closely on this little challenge and admired his patience in replicating the effect with thin sheet styrene strips. Before copying his method (if I could!) I decided to try a method I discovered completely by accident on my last Build, the WNW Fokker D.VII (OAW)
The Instructions for the D.VII include wrapping the top most longeron in the cockpit with lozenge decals which are pre-shaped on the Decal Sheet. I discovered that laying the decal flat on the top of the longeron, applying a couple of heavy applications of Microsol, and then sitting back and watching, the decal would, once softened, wrap itself tightly around the longeron needing only a little tidying up with a brush soaked in Micosol. Reasoning this should work on the double rigging portions I built a small jig to validate the procedure. The decal material chosen was Wingnut Wings After market Lozenge.
Here's the jig, no further detail needed, and the completed decal "wrap".
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3313.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3313.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3311.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3311.jpg.html)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3310.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3310.jpg.html)
.......and here's the painted version.......
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3315.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3315.jpg.html)
I was very pleased with the results; the wraps are now installed on the Model, and once dry will be painted and that seemingly insurmountable challenge turned out to be a relative "cake walk"! (the only challenge being manoeuvering the decal strips into position on the wires which calls for some facial contortions and lots of lip biting! Significantly none of the drooling that Dal mentioned using the styrene method.)
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3316.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3316.jpg.html)
Once the landing gear, engine and cowling, and "pinged off" Vickers are added and the tail section rigged there'll be a few minor touch-ups to do and She'll be done.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Ok, that looks totally brilliant - fantastic solution! I woulda thought the decal would have constricted the two wires together when it dried but it looks not...
I assume you lay the decal strip over the top of the two wires with just a small amount of overhang on each side?
-
Hello Lance:
Brilliant!! What an easy solution to this ongoing problem! I will be using this method on my next N.28 build. Thanks for all of the travailing and angst and coming up with this simple solution.

Mark

Awesome, Lance! I really like this technique and will definitely try it on future projects.

Great idea, Lance ;)
I'll be whipping out my beading loom in the next couple of days to give it a try.

Now that is a nifty way on doing the wrapping Lance ! I would have never had thought of using decal for doing the wrapping ...
Terri
-
What can I say but BRILLIANT! If I can muster the guts I may see if I can back cover my double wires on my 28 :-\
RAGIII
-
Hello Lance,
This is so inventive! Well done! You know there is an item in "Hints and Tips" about this by Dal. Maybe you could add this method there?
http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=2979.0
Kind regards
Patrick
-
Absolutely brilliant Lance! It looks perfect. It's stuff like this that separates the modellers from the assemblers. I would've tried wrapping the decal material around the lines with predictable results, never thinking to let the decal solvent do the job for me. Hey, who am I kidding here. I'd have never thought of the idea or the jig to make it work in the first place. You're a true modeller my friend!
With all of the trials and tribulations you've encountered along the way, I still maintain that this is going to be a corker when it's completed. The marking scheme is a real eye catcher to start with and this lozenge covered rigging is going to make her into a real piece of eye candy. The end result is going to be well worth all of your time and effort.
Cheers,
Chris
-
Petrov 27,
I cut the decal strips approximately double the width of the line spacing and that seemed to work well. The only difficult part of this trick is getting the strip sitting as you want it on the lines...........I found that water initially, then Microsol worked best, then leave it alone until it starts to "curl" and then use Microsol and a soft brush to "help" it along. (you can see the lines through the decal as you go with good light)
Patrick,
I will add this to the Hints and Tips Article soonest, thanks for the Link.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Many thanks for the very kind words, Chris. As I shared with you along the way She has more then a few "warts" picked up along the way, If I were to build a second one most of these self induced blemishes would be eliminated as they were due mainly to trying a few new techniques or widgets. If nothing else this has been a great reminder of how spoiled I'd become with the WNW quality of engineering as mentioned earlier.
Cheers,
Lance

Dittos to the above, will save this thread for when I do my N.28 ! eagerly await final photos !!

She's on her own legs and I'm calling her completed. It's been a long haul but I'm happy with the results.
(http://i1141.photobucket.com/albums/n583/lcarroll1/Brisfit/IMG_3358.jpg) (http://s1141.photobucket.com/user/lcarroll1/media/Brisfit/IMG_3358.jpg.html)
I learned a lot from this Build; not the least of which is the importance of the strength of the basic structure. Every strut had to be pinned, and aligned from "scratch", and I constructed and used Jigs for the wing strut alignment and the landing gear. The Kit's detail is very scarce however the basics are there and it can be made into a very nice replica of it's subject with a little extra effort.
It was also enjoyable to learn about the life of Quentin Roosevelt, Son of a former President of the USA who died in aerial combat on 14 July 1918. I admit to being relatively unversed in the exploits of the American Airmen in the first Great War as compared to those of other nations and this was an very educational opportunity for me; I particularly enjoyed the article on his experiences in the Alan Toelle Over the Front article referenced.
I'll be posting a photo spread in the Completed Models section later today and also updating the Tips and Techniques Article on wrapping of twin rigging wires as done on this Build.
Thanks for all the positive feedback and encouragement along the way, I've certainly had smoother Builds in the past!
Cheers,
Lance

Everything is done with your usual high standards and I hope to see more photos in the completed section. For now : many sincere congratulations!

Hello Lance:
For all of your travails with this model, it certainly doesn't show it. It is an outstanding build. The paint, the decals and the neat wrapping of the rigging. The cowling decals are challenging and you got them on evenly spaced. One of my favorites.

She looks superb Lance! I'm looking forward to seeing more images of her so hop to it. Now that you've kindled an interest in the U.S. contribution to the air war, can I tempt you into a two man GB involving the WnW Salmson 2-A2 in USAS markings? Seeing I'm between builds and liable to stray to the dark side, I could be yanked back on track. I'm game!
Cheers,
Chris
Hi Chris:
I have a WNW Salmson on the shelf with a nice PHEON Decal earmarked for the kit that I could be coerced into doing, once I get this Fokker E.IV wrapped up. Are you game for a tag team? We could compare notes along the way and see how we are doing, encourage etc.

Just catching up again Lance. Great finish to this project and a smart piece of engineering for the wire covering. That's a keeper!!!

Thanks for checking in and for your comments Gary. It is a pretty little airframe and certainly has added a bit of colour to the display case.

You certainly have produced a stunning Nieuport Lance, you had to overcome some obstacles along the way but your perseverance and exceptional modeling skills pulled you through with the resulting masterpiece, congratulations on a job very well done.

Thanks again for your comments Guys. I believe I may tackle another Roden Kit in the near future (SSW D III perhaps) but I need to relax with a reasonably smooth WNW Build or two first!
