OK, I have plucked up the courage to post some pictures. Compared with what I've seen so far on here my efforts aren't up to much but I like them and enjoy building them so I suppose that's what matters.
I suppose you could say that they are wargames standard and not show models. Because of the fact that they are used in wargaming I haven't, up until now, even considered fitting rigging but one of the models shown below is my first attempt at it. I've done only the basics between the wings but it does look better for it. I don't think I'll do any more than that as it will be easily damaged in gaming.
The first is a Hannover CLIIIa, built from an old Airfix kit. I hand painted the camouflage on the fuselage and middle section of the upper wing but the rest of the wings are covered in lozenge decal. I'm not sure it's the proper pattern for this aeroplane but it looks alright to me.
The second is a Nieuport 28, built from the Revell kit and painted in the colours of Eddie Rickenbacker of the 94th Aero Squadron USAAS. I opened out the engine cowl, using a reamer, as the hole looked too small when compared with photos of the real thing. This is the one I have added the rigging to for the first time. I used some sort of elastic that was about 1.5 mm thick. I cut into the end and then peeled off a narrow section. I didn't really know what I was doing but it's turned out alright.

Nieuport.

No need to bashful, Squiffy -
These look fine to me. My first attempts at rigging were truly dreadful - like you I did not know how to do this until I started reading tips on the internet. It just improves over time and everybody has there own preferred method. I believe there is a thread on this site on how to do it.
What are going to have a go at next?

Dave

Excellent work, Squiffy! Your hand painted Hannover looks very good and the five color camo on your Nieuport is brilliant. Her rigging looks fantastic, as well.
Cheers,
Bud
-
They both look very good, Squiffy!
I'm not a gamer, but if I were you, I'd make a point of adding the rigging - if you drill and thread using fine monofilament it adds a LOT to the structural strength of the model, which can surely only help if it's being handled a lot.
Ian
-
Very nice models, Squiffy. The rigging on the Nieuport is gorgeous, not
an easy feat in the teeny scale. It would be great to see more of
your work. Well done!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Both great looking models, the nieuport looks fantastic! Well done! :D

Thanks, chaps.

Hi, Ian. Is monofilament the same as nylon invisible thread? I got a bobbin of this from the haberdashers and had considered using it but didn't as it's difficult to handle and doesn't seem to take cyanoacrylate glue very easily.

Iam Currently building a Gotha IV and am finishing off a DH-2 and also an Albatros D.V, which I am painting in the colours of Lt. Hermann Goering of Jasta 27.
-
Hi Squiffy,
No, it's not quite the same. I tried that on my first build and it was a pain - it's too thick and consequently difficult to get the runs right. Mono is fishing line. 2lb test is about .005" (.13mm) - a little over scale but it looks fine and is easy to use.
Ian
-
Thanks, Ian. I've measured the thread and it's 0.13mm so I may have a go at using it. My biggest worry is drilling the struts to thread it through as it's sure to weaken them.
-
Don't drill the struts, drill the wings! Then you'll have the added structural strength.
Ian
-
I thought I commented on your builds last night. So now that I realize I didn't.... The Nieuport looks absolutely AWESOME! Lovely paint work! Your hand painting of the Mock Lozenge on the other is extremely well done!

Nice to see another game piece modeler... and in my scale!
Great job on both offerings, keep up the good work!

Hi Squiffy!
That hand painted lozenga on Hannover is amazing! :-)
Could You please post few more detailed photos of Nieuport 28?
-
Glad to meet yet one more 72nd scale builder! It is a fine pair of models, looking forward to see more.
-
squiffy i got some invisible thread and smoke colored invisible thread from the fabric store and its .004inch or .1mm which is fine for 1/72 and to me seems to have the same properties of monofilament fishing line except thinner than any fishing line i can find.
-
Glad to meet yet one more 72nd scale builder! It is a fine pair of models, looking forward to see more.
Totally agree with Prez: I too would like to see more of your models.
-
Don't drill the struts, drill the wings! Then you'll have the added structural strength.
Ian
Thanks, Ian. That makes sense but, on the real things, aren't the wires attached to metal brackets where the struts meet the wing? I suppose if the wings are drilled close enough to the struts then it isn't going to make much difference in this scale but I can see it being a problem to drill them accurately enough on models that are already built.
What do you then do about the bits that stick up through the wings? Can they be trimmed well enough to be hidden? So many questions! ???
To test how the thread looks I have rigged one of my first models from early this year, a HP 0/400, and the thread looks good even if my method of attaching it isn't (wrapped around the struts and held with a tiny dab of glue). It was a rough effort anyway so I had little to lose by having a go and it has improved the overall appearance. If the sun decides to show itself later I may take some pictures...
-
I drill the holes in the wings, too. I use as thin drill bit as possible (0.3mm or 0.25mm). And try to keep the holes as close to the strut socket as possible. I use elastic thread for rigging, I glue (gel CA) one end to the shallow hole in the lower wing. Then I attach the upper wing with pre-drilled see-through holes. When set, I pass the threads through the holes in the upper wing. A blob of gel CA glue applied to a loose line under the wing to the spot where it enters the hole, makes it fixed when it is tightened upwards. When set, I cut the excess threads flush with the upper wing surface using a fresh razor blade. Then I fill the holes with dense paint, sand flush using very fine sand paper. Then I paint the upper side of the upper wing.
Hope that makes sense.
As for the model which is already built, it maybe problematic to drill the holes :( Me, I would not dare do it. But maybe you are not afraid to loose the upper wing and repeat the assembly with the rigging.
Some time ago, at a modelling competition, I have seen a modeller who rigged 72nd scale models without any holes. He just glued the elastic thread to the bases of struts when the wing cellule was assembled. I have tried it but it was hard to tighten the line, pressing it home with a needle and not to glue the thread to the needle instead of glueing it to its destination. An it always led to some glue marks on the wing and the struts. That is why I prefer the method with the holes, even though it requires making up that mess on the upper surface. If you check my build logs in 72nd scale you will find some photos of the process, for instance here:

I have some more, if you are interested.

Yes, that makes sense. Thanks for posting that.
Unfortunately I had to go to work and the sun didn't shine, so no photos of the Handley Page.
-
My "bloody paralyser of an aeroplane" - Handley Page 0/400, built from the Airfix kit, now with added rigging. It is one of my first efforts so isn't very well put together but the rigging has improved it somewhat.
-
These are very nicely done, Sir!
Welcome to the Brotherhood....
-
Thanks to the description of the rigging method by PrezmoL I have finished and rigged my Gotha IV. It's a Roden kit and, I have to say, is the most difficult and complex kit I've done to date.
The struts are extremely fine and, unfortunately, some have buckled slightly under the tension of the rigging. I suppose I should have peeled the elastic thinner to begin with so wouldn't have had to stretch it as much. I think it still looks a little too thick (but not as thick as it appears in the photos - I think that's something to do with the lighting) but I'm happy to have even completed it - I suppose it's a learning curve...
The decals are freshly applied so haven't settled down yet and it then needs a coat of varnish. I would like to add some weathering but that's another thing I've never done before and need to learn about...
-
The Gotha looks great! Even if the rigging is a little too thick it still looks better than without it! One of the reasons I use monofilament for rigging is that it won't pull your struts crooked - as long as you make sure the line is taught before securing the loose end it will add the rigidity needed without over stressing the struts.

For someone who is still relatively new to building WW1 subjects I think that your models are of a very high standard. I would be pleased to have produced any of these. Do show us more when you have built them.

Thanks. I'm relatively new to building these subjects but I've been railway modelling for years so putting kits together (though I usually use a soldering iron with railway locomotives!) is nothing new to me but some of the techniques, such as rigging, are. I'm also not too bad at weathering railway locomotives and rolling stock but weathering aeroplanes is completely different and something I'd like to learn about.
Here are a couple of pics of the build of the Airfix Roland CII that I have just finished. I've gone back to the invisible thread for the rigging and, to improve it slightly, have replaced the observer's gun with one that was a spare in the Gotha kit.
-
That Roland really looks the part. Congratulations. Considering how old the kit is (I remember it being released when I was a teenager) it still makes up into a good model. Not WNW for certain, but then there is a slight difference in size and cost!
-
Very nice work on the Roland and others! I LOVE that Roland crew, I still have the figures with some others in my PARTS box! Very well done and the rigging is great!!!
RAGIII
-
Nice little Roland, Squiffy!
Apart from rigging, the main improvements you'll find necessary on these old Airfix kits - both of which are pretty simple but make a huge differance - are thinning the tail surfaces and wing trailing edges, and modifying the undercarriage to get rid of those awful "sewer pipe" fittings!
Oh, and of course, on some of them you'll need to remove the railway-sleeper style wing ribs! Nothing a bit of sanding can't take care of.

From the old Revell kit. I'm really pleased with how the rigging has come out - probably the best to date. :)
-
Nice looking Eindecker! Looking at this Old revelle kit certainly brings back memories! The rigging looks great in My Opinion!

Thanks!
Here are my latest efforts - a pair of Sopwith's finest. The Pup is Airfix and the Camel is Revell. I have done only the most basic rigging due to the way the struts fit into the wings on both of these kits and decided to quit whilst I was ahead. I have, however, fitted rigging to the undercarriage of the Pup - a first for me.

Well done brace of Sopwiths! I like the colorful Camel scheme and the Pup is just a great example of terrific modeling!

I've been working on this one for almost a month, on and off. To avoid the problems I had with some of the struts warping on the Gotha G.IV I have rigged this one with nylon thread. The fact that lozenge camo decal had to be applied to both upper and lower wing surfaces, and the fuselage, made it a more difficult build than the previous Gotha.
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l5/soddit36/soddit36042/GothaGva1.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/soddit36/media/soddit36042/GothaGva1.jpg.html)

And this morning I built this cheeky little Junkers D.1. Built, painted and decalled in a morning. No rigging - easy! :P

Nice work Squiffy! Those Roden 1:72 bombers may be the only realistic way that I would be able to build and display a Gotha or a Zeppelin Staaken. Bargain priced, too! How'd you like them for buildability? Challenging but doable, or headwinds the entire way?
Thanks for sharing,
Lindsay
-
Hi Lindsay,
I found this one to be quite challenging, especially as the instructions contradicted the box illustration and themselves with regard to the struts above the engine nacelles. In fact the struts in the entire build are a challenge, being so flimsy and thin.
As you say, they are bargain-priced but I don't understand how Roden price these things when a Gotha costs around £21 yet the Zeppelin is almost £80!
-
Challenging or not your Gotha turned out beautifully!
RAGIII
-
Excellent models especially the Gotha.
How were the decals with that kit? I have read stories about Roden decals and am wondering whether to buy others instead. In fact they are one of the reasons why mine has been stalled for a long time.
-
a whole Gotha for just a month? Man, you are damn fast and the result is looking more than excellent!

The lozenge decal was absolutely brilliant. It didn't suffer any breakages and was fine enough to settle in and show up details on the fuselage mouldings and ribs on the wings. The crosses and other details, which were on a seperate sheet, were a bit fragile and I had a few breakages but nothing major.

Here are a couple of Camels that I have finished today.
B6299 as flown by Flt. Lt. Norman Mc Gregor of Naval 10.

Revell Kit. I didn't use the stripe decals in the kit but painted them on, with the help of masking tape, as I have finished it not as per instructions but as shown in the Osprey book 'Sopwith Camel Aces of World War 1'.
B7270, as flown by Capt. Roy Brown of 209 sqn.

Revell kit. I left off the fuselage roundels and the red fuselage stripe that were in the kit and finished it as per the above mentioned book illustration.

Thanks for the kind words, chaps. It's most encouraging.
Here's one I started on Monday. ;D
DH4 A8032, as crewed by Major Egbert Cadbury (pilot) and Major Bob Leckie (observer/gunner) on the occasion of their destroying Zeppelin L70, 5th of August 1918.

It's an Airfix kit that I bought at a show for £4. I shouldn't think Cadbury and Leckie went armed with those 100lb bombs but I've fitted them for wargaming purposes.

More excellent models - especially the Camels. The background hangar also looks very realistic and sets off the models well. The Gotha at night is also a very effective idea. Thanks for showing.
-
Revell kit. I intended this to be N6307, the mount of Flight Sublieutenant John Sharman of Naval 10, but the roundels on the fuselage sides are wrong and although the engine cowl should be blue, the area immediately behind it shouldn't be bare metal.
I replaced the Revell Vickers gun with a gun from my spares box, which came off a SPAD A2, and the chunky wheels with a spare pair from a Roden Camel, or Nieuport and the equally chunky axle with a piece of plastic rod.
The paint is a mix of Tamiya Hull Red and Olive Drab.

In the hangar is the very first WW1 aeroplane that I built, abour 6 months ago - another Sopwith Tripe. I really daren't show that one up close but it does remind me how much my modelling has improved in that time. :o

Here's one I built about a month ago but have only just put the finishing touches to.
SPAD A2 of the Imperial Russian Air Service. The kit is from Amodel and wasn't very good. I had to replace all of the struts with brass wire. The parts for the gun mount also had to be replaced with brass wire.

It's not a pusher. It's a tractor with a 'pulpit' for the gunner/observer in front of the propeller. Apparently the nose of the prop ran in a ball-race in the back of the pulpit and the whole thing was hinged from the landing gear so it could be lowered out of the way for engine maintenance.
-
I have just changed the title. I said it was an A2 but it is, in fact, an A4. I'm afraid I didn't take any more photos.

More photos or not this is a really nice build! The A2/A4 is certainly one of the More interesting solutions to firing an MG straight ahead! Also much of the design went into the SPAD VII resulting in the Ultimate best of the French fighters, the VII,XII/XIII.

Very nice work!

Very well done - and in such a short time too. It looks very realistic and the diorama setting is a wonderful background. I know that this is not the easiest model to build from experience and I think you have turned a pretty basic and old kit into a really good and impressive piece. Many congratulations.

Well done Squiffy! It's been really interesting following your build on the Vimy. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Hi Squiffy,
What a nice collection of a/c you have made. You are a turbo builder. Your setup is well thought of and does enhance your models tremendously. Well done, congratulations!

Beautiful kites, in particular the Vimy diorama is great. I didn't know there was any of those machines that reached the operation zone before te war was over. Where can I find more info about that?
Thanks and congratulations again for the beautiful work.
Antonio
-
Antonio - I don't know about any more info about it but here's the Wiki entry for the Vickers Vimy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickers_Vimy It doesn't mention the number of the one that was in France before the war's end but I've read it in one of my books somewhere.
-
Further to the Vimy in France in November 1918, J. M. Bruce in the Datafile Special states that possibly two Vimy's were in France in November 1918 but that these would have been Fiat powered pre-production machines. The cowlings and exhausts on the Fiat powered models were slightly different to the Eagles (as represented in the kit) and there are no records that I can find at the moment of serials or other markings. I too had read many years ago in another book that two machines were on stand-by from 9.11.18 but for the life of me I cannot now find the source. I regard J. M. Bruce as a highly reliable source as he had access to most if not all official records and many unofficial ones too. He was a much respected historian.
I think that it is probable that there was at least one Vimy in France in early November 1918, and very likely that there were two, but as with many of these events so long ago the details are lacking.

As a break from building the WNW Pup I reached into the stash and brought out, at random, another Revell kit. This one cost me £5 at Sywell airshow a couple of weeks ago and was in the really old style box. Somewhere on the instructions was the year 1964! The kit is still current but is provided with RAF 23 Sqn. decals. I bought this one because it's different, being provided with decals for USAS 94th Aero Squadron.

The decals took some time to soak before they came away from the backing but they all came off intact and settled down nicely, which is pretty good for 50-year old decals and more than I can say for some new stuff!
-
As seen in the background of my last photo, a pair of S.E.5a that I built earlier this year but have just brought up to an improved standard by adding rigging. The red one (which will be Capt. Duncan Grinnell-Milne's kite when I make some lettering for it) is a Revell kit and the plain one is, I believe, Maj. Edward 'Mick' Mannock's and is a Roden kit.
The new one is a Home Defence nightfighter of 61 Squadron and is the same Revell kit. I masked and painted the diamonds and made my own decals to overlay the kit decals.

Two new and one re-worked. The Nieuport was built back in April but I hadn't got the hang of rigging then, so now I'm going through some of my early builds and adding rigging and other little improvements. The SSW and Albatros are new.
Siemens Schukert D.III (Eastern Express kit) of Ernst Udet. My first attempt at adding rib tapes. I found it very difficult to place them over the ribs as they are not very prominent on the wing mouldings. I think most just ended up being spaced as evenly as I could get them. :-\

Those are really well done models. I especially like the SSW and BTW there is nothing to worry about the rib tapes - they look fine from here. Your airfield settings are also very good and form an interesting background to set off your models.
-
Thanks, LM. The German airfield needs more buildings but I'm going to build the main hangar again too. It appears too tall. I based it one one in a book but it's difficult to scale it from the photo. Brick structures are fairly easy to scale by counting the brick courses but wooden ones are so much more difficult, especially when there are no people in shot.

So many beautiful models.

Thanks, chaps!
I've been working on several kits at once and doing a bit here and a bit there on each and so now they are coming together in quick succession.
The latest is a Sopwith 1 1/2 strutter. The kit was bought second hand, packaged as "Flashback" and made in the Czech Republic. It's not a manufacturer I've come across before but it was a delight to build, with the exception of the engine... Included were etched parts for the cockpit but I haven't used them, preferring to use them on my Pup build. The guns and pilot and observer's seats are in resin and the pilot's seat is particularly nice. It's a shame they can barely be seen, hence my saving the other parts for the Pup, where they are more visible.
The kit was actually for a single-seater but some of the parts to make it a 2-seater were in the kit, so I made it a 2-seater and painted the identification symbols on. Unfortunately the details for the Lewis gun mount were missing so I've improvised a piece of bent wire.

I'm really pleased with the way this has turned out.
-
Another excellent build there - you really do turn them out quickly, but they are still very good. How do you do it?
-
Very nicely done Squiffy, you certainly do produce at a fast rate but more impressive is the quality you bring here. That SSW is a real prize, I find it difficult to accept that these are all 1:72!
Cheers,
Lance
-
WOW what a superb and colourful collection. V nice photos too.
(I'd hazzard the "Flashback" kit is Eduard, they produced a few under that name in their early days)
-
Hi Squiffy your enthusiasm is infective and the fact that you build atmospheric railways and you war game your squadrons makes me think that you are a modeller who has found the very best of happy balances.

Very nice Squiffy!
BTW, the blue/red Albatross of Beaulieu von Marconnay is Jasta 15 colours, not 19.

Very nice Squiffy!
BTW, the blue/red Albatross of Beaulieu von Marconnay is Jasta 15 colours, not 19.
Ian
I did think that, Ian but the Eduard instructions say Jasta 19 and I believe Von Beaulieu-Marconnay did command Jasta 19, so I assumed they knew what they were talking about. It all gets a bit complicated with Jastas 15/18 so maybe whoever wrote the instructions got confused in the fog of war and made a typo... ???
It being from 15 is all the better because I'll have 3 machines in their colours when I build the yet-to-be-started Fok. D.VII that I've got in the group build.

Both Jastas had blue fuselages, red nose was 15, green nose was 19. (Source: W/S Datafile Fokker D.VII Anthology)

Here's another! Revell Albatros D.III. I replaced the kit wheels with a pair of Roden spares and painted it as the mount of Lt. Hermann Frommherz of Jasta Boelcke. The guns are also replacements for the very poor kit parts and I fitted a Roden engine and exhaust (not that you can see them in this photo but I've had camera problems and will get some more in due course...)

I've been off-work since Tuesday with flu-like symptoms but I had enough of lying in bed yesterday and just after noon I got out of bed and pulled one of my Telford purchases from the pile. The AVRO 504K is an old Airfix kit that dates from 1967 but I think my particular kit was in 1970s packaging.
I started yesterday and finished a couple of hours ago. It kept me occupied and I almost forgot about being ill...

I've added castor oil staining and chips in the paint on the engine cowl that are showing the bare metal through as a bit of weathering.

The speed which you build these models is amazing in itself, but the results are really excellent. The Avro looks very impressive and not at all like a kit from the mid 1960's.

Thanks for the kind words. The AVRO came out much better than I expected for such an old kit.
Here's one I made earlier - just before I joined the forum. I'd finished it as far as I could then but at the time I didn't do rigging, so this is the second model I've posted where I've gone back and re-painted and rigged it.

Very nice model and your diorama and photography are top shelf, but my, what a homely airplane. It looks like it has a broken back and was designed to use a coal fueled engine. Makes the Be2 look positively sleek. Where the crews found the courage to even get in the thing, let alone fly it in combat, escapes my imagination.
-
Considering that this was one of Airfix's earliest releases (from 1957 if my memory is correct), you have amide a first class job of this. My heartiest congratulations.
Rob H.: Those machines may have looked primitive but in fact they ware very robust and stable and much more difficult to shoot down than popular myth suggests. In fact if flown well they could give a good account of themselves in the air - unlike their BE2 predecessors.

I don't have an airbrush so trying to replicate the partial overpainting of the cockades was a bit hit and miss. :( I've painted the back of the prop black. This was painted so to prevent light from the Holt's flares reflecting back and spoiling the pilot's night vision on landing.

To be honest, it's an Eduard Nie 17 but as I'm by no means a Nieuport expert, it looked the same as a 23 to me. I painted and decalled it so because I wanted a Belgian machine in my collection.
-
Another beautiful little bird from your bench! Well Done! Off the top of my head the only major difference in appearance between the 17 and 23 was that the Machine Gun was slightly offset to starboard. Perhaps a little different rigging pattern. Either way it basically looks the same as you said. Nice colorful scheme!

I've just gone through your whole thread and looked at your collection as a whole and I have to say wow! Impressive modeling, especially for 1/72, and even more impressive considering the speed at which you build these. That's definitely a plus with the smaller scales. You can actually finish a model in good time, unlike 1/32 which shows every stitch and turnbuckle.

Squiffy, you keep outdoing yourself. Well done on the Hannover, especially
the hand painted lozenge. The 0-400 is a beast and you did a superb
job on a difficult kit. Great work!

Well done Squiffy! Maybe those figures are the ones from Orion?
Warren

I really don't know, Warren.
It's been almost two months since I added anything to this topic. I must be slowing down.
So, here's a new one. It's not one of my best efforts but here goes...
Zeppelin Staaken R.VI
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l5/soddit36/soddit36166/Zep2.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/soddit36/media/soddit36166/Zep2.jpg.html)

I think it's time to do something a little easier, smaller and without lozenge!
-
That Staakan is a monster of a kit (in terms of size). Where on earth do you put it? You have made a very good job of it though - very impressive indeed.
What were the transfers like? I have a Gotha which I started and then stopped in part because I have been led to believe that the lozenge transfers leave a lot to be desired. Any helpful comments would be appreciated.
-
Hello, LM. The lozenge decal was very good to use and suffered no breakages whilst appyling it, unlike a lot of other Roden decal. I had the same experience when going my own Gotha. The crosses, on the other hand, were rather fragile.
I'm led to understand that the colours of the Roden night lozenge leave a lot to be desired but with this being such a monster I decided to use them, and not go for Aviattic, simply on the grounds of cost. I painted on a dilute wash of dark blue to dull down the rather bright light blue and I think this has improved it slightly.
-
That's a really great bomber, Squiffy -
This must have been a trial of real patience ..............
Regards
Dave
-
Squiffy, I remember when you started this beast, and you did a beautiful job with it too IMHO. I shudder at the thought of building such a monster.
Warren

Thanks, chaps.
And now for something a little simpler...
I've been posting pictures of the build of this little Revell S.E.5a in the 'under construction' section. I attempted to build it in one evening but failed and it took 23 hours bar the decal finishing. Now it is completed.

They both look great, Squiffy. You are turning them out at 1918 production levels.
Chris
-
Two lovely little models there. As has been commented you turn them out as if they were on a production line. In 23 hours I have not even made a pair of floats!
-
Great models. I am sure you have a great collection so far. How many planes are on your shelves so far?
loking forward next built

Squiffy, first it seems I missed your beautiful Hannover and the Giant Bomber! Outstanding results as always! The SE5a is unbelievable..24 hours I have to look at the next step longer than that ;D Finally the Albatros is lovely. One of my favorites!

I don't have shelf space for them, so they're hung from the ceiling of one room in the house. I can't honestly say how many because every time I try to count them I finish with a different number! It's somewhere between 58 and 64 completed, 4 in various stages of build and 5 in the stash that are yet to be started.
They're all put up at randowm but one day I will take them down and rearrange them - German bombers, in formation, at one end, Allied at the other with scouts and 2-seaters tailing each other in a huge swirling dogfight.

Very impressive, Squiffy!

Hi Squiffy, could you explain how you fix the monofilament(I guess) to the ceiling/planes?
No problem! I take two roughly equal lengths and tie a loose simple knot in one end of each, then pass the knots over the spike of a drawing pin. Apply a blob of superglue to the knots, in order to ensure they don't slip, and repeat for the other end. Now we have two loops hanging from the drawing pin. The pin is pushed into the ceiling and into the loops is passed the aircraft, which usually hang by the fuselage. The Felixstowe being an exception due to the boat hull and being quite top-heavy, so this is suspended by the wings.
Although the monofilament is strong enough to take the weight of any of my models I always use 2 drawing pins for anything bigger than a 2-seater as the pins in the ceiling are the weakest link when it comes to weight. The R.VI has four pins and four loops - two around the fuselage and one for each wing.
-
Another one to hang.
Bristol Scout.

Very impressive collection, Squiffy, I admire your speed. ;)
Btw. on the first photo of the Bristol scout the prop seems to be rotating - how did you do that???

That is a lovely Scout. Who was the kit manufacturer? The standard of your models is amazingly high especially considering the speed that you build them.
-
Thanks, chaps!
Very impressive collection, Squiffy, I admire your speed. ;)
Btw. on the first photo of the Bristol scout the prop seems to be rotating - how did you do that???
I aimed a fan at it. To get it to rotate freely enough for this to happen I hollowed out the shaft of the engine by drilling it with successively larger drill bits until I could push a dressmaker's pin down it. The prop was drilled through to allow a length of brass tube (with an inside diameter large enough for the pin to fit through) to be push-fitted into it. The pin is glued into the engine. The friction between the polished pin and the brass tube is so low that the prop will turn with the slightest blow.
-

It's from MAC Distribution. Prezemol has built one if you want to see an 'under construction' and his is far nicer than mine.

"Gonna need a bigger ceiling".
I think it's going that way! ;D
Here's one I've had under construction for several weeks, on and off, but have now completed. It's the Eastern Express kit of an Aviatik (Berg) D.1. The struts are very thin and fiddly and there didn't appear to be any positive location of the lower planes into the fuselage, so I had to estimate their position, drill the fuselage and pin and glue them.
The kit wheels were awful! Too fat and with overly large moulded spokes, so I replaced them with a pair from a Fokker D.VII. Maybe not to the purist's taste but it looks better for them, IMHO.
The colour scheme and lettering is that of Oblt. Frank Linke-Crawford.

Very nice Berg, Squiffy, as I built one myself I know what a difficult and complex design it is and I really like your build.
Linke-Crawford's kite is one of the most discussed Aviatiks and if you ask 4 experts you get 8 opinions on the colours. :)
I have to say you did a great job with the decals, they fit very nicely.

I would say it is reasonably detailed but probably not as detailed as an equivalent plastic injection-moulded kit would be. One thing I did find is that there are no holes, dimples, or anything else to locate the cabane struts on the fuselage and I also found it impossible to fit these with the forward-firing machine gun fitted, or to fit the gun after the struts. Therefore my model is without a forward-firing gun. :(
Here it is:

As I've been working on a German diorama I have been building German crates. The latest is a Pfalz D.XII from Eastern Express.
The struts are quite fragile and I managed to break 3 of them but only one is really noticeable. There is no interior on this one as I intend to fit a pilot.

Those Revell kits are old and they show it sometimes. On this occasion however your skill has more than made up for the deficiencies of the kit - a lovely little trio.

Excellent work!
Regarding the lettering, I use Woodland Scenics' dry transfers, found at most model railroad hobby shops, for custom wing lettering and serial numbers. Application is easy and once a clear coat is added afterward, very durable.

Thanks, chaps. I am getting slower but better. Work and other things (not to mention several miles of rib tapes!) have meant that it's been a month in the building but now my BAT Project Gotha GL.VII is completed. I didn't document the build on the forum as I've come to realise that I'm pretty hopeless in keeping up with posting progress and my builds aren't exactly revolutionary in what I do. I drilled out the prop centres and sleeved them with brass tube. They are then held in by dressmaking pins, that are glued into the engine nacelles. This makes a low-friction bearing so the props can be blown round by pointing a fan at them.

Squiffy,
You have completely outrun me again! I have missed the Gotha, Albatros and now the Roland!!. All three are really good, especially the Revell Albatros which you have performed a minor miracle on to get such a good result. Awesome Harry Tate, Squiffy! That third photo where you're holding the wing tip looks like a real plane in the sky! If it wasn't for your hand and the fact that there's no pilot, it would have fooled me! :D
George

Oh my the Giant Hand in the sky captures yet another victim.
Squiffy,
Outstanding work my friend.
Highest Regards,

You have done a superb job Squiffy, hard to believe that this excellent model is the old basic Airfix kit.
Des.
-
Great job Squiffy,we should have a group build where we take an old naff kit and see what we can do with it.
-
Outstanding work on that OLD basic kit Squiffy! It was great to see your processes while following your build!

Very Nice RE 8, squiffy!
That model brings me memories of my boyhood.

Crikey! Loving the giant hand shot :o
She's a little beauty, Sqiffy ;)

I can hear the vrooom sounds from here :)

This, for me, is possibly the longest gap between posting completed builds. No sooner had I completed the R.E8 than I started WNW 1/32nd F.E2b.
Having a week away from work, sick, has helped get this one done but it's been a mighty battle with tubes and eyelets for the rigging! It looks rather good in the photos but I assure you it isn't as good as it could be.
This is the first model of any kind that I have painted using an airbrush. It may be somewhat silly to learn as you go on a large and expensive kit but fortune favours the brave... ;D

That is an excellent build and never mind the first attempt with the airbrush - it certainly looks as though fortune has smiled on you.
Stephen.

Hi,
so nice!! ;D

Most Excellent Squiffy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Squiffy on completing this awesome looking model. Your first attempt at using an air brush certainly payed off, the model is excellent in all respects and the rigging is superb, well done.

Beautiful build Squiffy!
-
Squiffy,
This is an absolutely lovely build all around! Your airbrushing looks fantastic as does the rigging and all of the construction!

Well done, Dave.
Tis no easy thing to string a bird as stringy as the Fee - you did a splendid job!
Cheers,

Very nicely done Squiffy! Now you'll have to build a whole new aerodrome....

Thanks, chaps.

Ian
I don't think so, Ian. In fact I'm struggling to find somewhere to simply display this beast, never mind build a 32nd scale aerodrome!
I have space for up to five 32nd scale kites to be hung in the shed and, after that, I won't be building any more in this scale simply because of a lack of space. I already have the WNW Pup and an Academy Camel built so with the Fee I have two two more to build. As I have a Snipe and an S.E5a in the stash that's my lot for 32nd.
That said I could be easily tempted to replace the Academy Camel with the WNW version when it appears.
I'll stick the Academy one on top of the shed as a weather vane. ;D
-
Congratulations on a superb result Squiffy - I'm truly inspired by your dedication to the rigging and only hope I will have thee resolve to do likewise. Beautiful looking model, bet you are well chuffed.

PS just this afternoon paid the Vat etc on mine - should be here tomorrow ;)

Hi Squiffy!!!!
Great work on your Fe.2b!!! ;) Gorgeous looking think!!! ;)
Cheerio

Thanks, chaps. I've gone back to my usual scale for this one. Built from the old Revell kit again.

Thanks, chaps.
With all this holiday time I've got a few different kites on the go, at various stages of completion. I bought this one not long after the start of the French GB and was originally going to do it for the GB. The kit is Eastern Express and comes with decals for a Russian machine but as I had no French decals I have finished it as a machine of 60 Squadron RFC. To be truly complete it needs the serial number on the tail but that will have to wait until I make a batch of decals for other projects too.

Your Eindecker and Morane are beautiful additions to your collection. Very well done on both!
RAGIII

Lovely little Morane, Squiffy. The fuselage looks a lot more accurate than Revell's ....
Ian

Never fails to impress me with your work Squif!

Thanks, chaps. ;D
The Bullet is now completed with serial number. A199 was the aircraft of 2nd Lt. H. Meintjes.

And so onto another 60 Squadron kite...
(http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l5/soddit36/Stuff2/N17-019.jpg) (http://s92.photobucket.com/user/soddit36/media/Stuff2/N17-019.jpg.html)
The second off the production line of holiday projects is completed.

2nd Lt. Keith Caldwell's 'grid', - Nieuport 17 A6646.
I built this from a Revell Nieuport 17 but modified it by adding a Roden engine and Eduard engine cowling, home-made decals all-round and a cast brass Lewis gun.

These are two more little gems Squiffy. You do make them quickly but always to a very high standard. The airfield is just right for display - the figures and props are inspiring.
Stephen.
-
Outstanding work. Great dioramas and I've just seen the RE8. Can't believe it's the venerable Airfix kit that I think dates back to just after the end of WW1 :)
-
Thanks for the kind words, Toby and Stephen.
I have to say that I'm rather pleased with this next one. It's not perfect but when I began it I wasn't at all sure that I could pull it off at all as this isn't built from a kit.
A6526 is the serial number of the F.E2b that is currently in the RAF Museum at Hendon. I've painted my model in the same colours as far as I can tell. As A6526 is currently suspended from the roof in the Graham White factory it is impossible to see what colour the top side of the upper plane is and of the dozens of photographs of this aircraft on the interweb I cannot find one that shows the top. So I've gone with PC10, as shown on the WNW site on the options given for their night bomber versions.
Showing the underside of the model. This is the same view you get of the real thing in the museum.

Well done Squiffy. The Fee is a popular machine but not easy to model in 1/72 scale as I know from experience of a conversion. You have done a really super job on this one - it really looks like the example at Hendon. The bombs and that lewis gun are most impressive and I see that you have included the Holt flare holders and other fine details. The figures with the bomb and chock are also excellent - really good poses. A real tribute to your modelling skills.
What's next? A Vickers FB 5 Gunbus? Or an FE 8? Or….
Stephen.
-
Very nicely done Squiffy! I love that last pic too, very atmospheric!
Ian
-
Thanks, Ian and Stephen. Coming from two great exponents of 72nd scale modelling, your encouraging comments mean a lot to me.
This is the most difficult build I have done to date.
-
"This is the most difficult build I have done to date."
No doubt, Squiffy. The "Fee" is a tough build in any scale and 1:72 is something I'd avoid like a plague. You've done a wonderful job on her, great work! I too really like the final photo, looks like a theme photo for "One Spring in Picardy".
Cheers,
Lance

Congratulations Squiffy on completing this brilliant model, all aspects of this model are extremely well done and the addition of the figures adds that finishing touch. Your photography is very well done and shows the model in excellent detail, well done.
