Been working on the engine. Got some detail painting done, bright brass on the fittings and rocker arms and some steel on the nuts. Started wiring it. You might not be able to see the ones I've done. When I finish I'll take a pic of the back and you'll see better. WNWs does not give an engine decal surprisingly even though the data plate is molded on. So used Archers Generic placards and cut a small one in half and applied it. Not sure if you can see it in the pic, but it is evident. Maybe going a bit too far.

no such thing as going too far in my book;)
looks nice, placard is a nice touch

Very nicely done James, the colours are really good and the placard gives that finishing touch.

Looking forward to seeing a Barker snipe being built!

A very nice, convincing start James.

Good luck with this build, James. Very nice start! :)

Nicely done engine! I am looking forward to your further progress!

Thanks everyone. Have had only a little time to do stuff. Disappointed the bluing and orange heat distressing doesn't show up too well on the pipes. Got some oil wash on and it livens it up some. Started painting the cockpit. Next up is figuring what oil paint to use for a light wood.

Okay, managed to get some modeling done. Some wood work and the instrument panel. I also painted the guns which are awesome from Gaspatch. Just have to brush them with pencil lead next.

Also got some more done on engine. This has been over 2 days. I hope I have a good colour for the bombs. I would really appreciate anyone knowing more that me commenting on whether you think this is a good shade. I used Vallejo Gold Brown to paint them.

Outstanding wood tone and grain on the cockpit sidewalls, James. looking mighty fine thus far!
Cheers,

-
Very nice work, James. I do like those Gaspatch guns: excellent items, as you say. I'll probably have to get a few. ;)
Good luck with the rest of your build!
-
Looking good! Nice wood paneling there.
From the pics Jamo offered up I'd say the bomb yellow color has a tetch more orange and bit duller too -- but I am no expert.
-
Hello James,
Great progress. Lovely instrument panel. I like the woodwork and of course the engine too. Well done!
Kind regards
Patrick

Excellent work to date James, the machine guns look a real treat.
Des.

Thanks guys. Appreciate it.
Okay only got a little done. Have cross bracing applied and painted steel. Second pic shows after a wash applied to various components. Also the guns brushed with pencil lead. May have to do that again as I dont think they are shiny enough.

Anyone have a good paint procedure for a wicker seat? Colours etc? Thanks in advance.
James
-
Hello, James -
Looking good so far. As far as wicker seat colour, I use 'Ochre' which seems a reasonable close match followed by used darkened shade applied as wash. Once dry, I've dry brushed Ochre slightly lightened to add a bit of colour depth/shading.
Others may have a better choice of colour of course ...........
Regards
Dave
-
Thanks Dave. I have yellow ochre oil paint. Will have to see if I have some vallejo lurking about. Will definately try that. Thanks again.
James
-
All your work so far is looking excellent James. For my wicker seats I use Hobby Color (Gunze) H71 Middlestone, in my eyes it looks very close to the wicker colour.
Des.

Stunning wood work and a terrific looking pit!
RAGIII
-
Thanks everyone. Found some Vallejo Ochre brown. Am experimenting although a bit of a setback today. Went down to the shop and found model all over floor. Luckily I noticed something wasnt right before I stepped on something or sat down. Found half the fuse under the chair wheel when I pulled it back. Only thing I can see that is broken are the guns. So cleaned up and started painting wicker. Will have to think some on the guns. Darned cats, neither is confessing to the crime.

Feline Overlords strike again!
-
Ouch! I feel for you James. If you wish my Wonder Dog G. Shepherd is only minutes away, and has a way with Felines, (not for your Wife's eyes!!) ;)Seriously, glad it's only minor damage, that could have been devastating! From what you've posted thus far I'm sure the recovery will be top drawer and all will be well.
Cheers,
Lance
-
James, I'm sure that you will recover from the Feline setback and end up with a
terrific model. I wonder if the cats are open to Salmon bribery? ;) ;D
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Okay the seat so far. First attempt at wicker. What do you think?

James

Looks like wicker and leather to me James! Well done. ;D
Cheers,

-
Very nice James, I love it!

Patrick
-
I believe you have pretty-much nailed it, James, especially the wicker.
What paint did you settle on for that colour?
Cheers,
Ernie :)
-
Thank you. Okay for the wicker I used Vallejo Ochre Brown. When dry I used a wash of Burnt Umber oil paint. Then when dry I dry brushed with the Vallejo Ochre Brown lightened with Vallejo Golden Yellow.
For the Leather I used Vallejo Saddle leather. Then went over it with oil paints, Mars Orange. I then used Mars Brown and Yellow Ochre to make it look more used.
It looks better today now that everything is dry. More pics to come.
James
-
James,
Glad the wicker seat colours worked out for you - looks right to me.
Good luck with the rest of the build and watch out for the cats around your work bench!
Regards
Dave
-
Thanks Dave. Cats have been banned from the man cave much to their disgust.
A tiny bit done. Have to work on the kit guns next and install before I can button up the fuse. Anyone building this I think it might be easier to install the gun mount before you install the gyro.

That is a shame James, considering how much work and talent you have invested in it,
but we know what's in there. ;) :D
Great Progress with the build!

Hello James,
You are right that most of your excellent work isn't visible anymore, but at least your wonderful seat is visible in all its splendor.

You've done a fantastic job so far, James. The seat and cushion certainly look the part.

-
Thanks everyone. Its agreat confidence boost.
Some more progress. Cut the fore part of the Gaspatch barrels and the receiver part of the WNW guns and joined them. Still need to tone them down some. Fuse together and working on wings. In last shot you can see where I tried an experiment on the underside of 1 wing. Used thinned smoke and sprayed over taped ribs. Will do the same on other wing over the decals. I think after a satin coat they will not look as stark.

Thanks. The scary part is using the fittings I just received from you to rig this. Thats usually where I stumble and quit.

Thanks. A lot of tips from this forum have led me to try some new techniques. I'm happy they are working so well.

Lovely work on the wings! I am sure you have already mentioned this but if so I have forgotten. What paint/color are you using on the upper wing surfaces? I really like the color!

RAGIII
I didnt do anything special on the upper wings. It is Tamiya Olive drab or PC 10 as called for by WNW. Looking at the prints in the Pheon decals it looked to be overall PC10 with no PC 12. I hope thats correct.
James
-
Very nice work on the wings, James. The thinned Smoke worked a treat.
The Snipe is shaping up beautifully.

Thank you.
A small update. Need to touch up some areas and gloss coat and add decals. Then the hard part.
The Pheon drawings show the whole prop in wood while pics of other Snipes show a grey paint on fron and black on back over parts. Any one lnow for sure? Man my desk looks messy.

Beautiful work, James! Like Rick, I love the color. I read somewhere that US Army Air Corps Olive Drab was based on PC10. It sure looks the part. By the way, your bench looks just like mine.
Cheers,

Put me down as a "yea" for the PC10 as well, James. Your workspace
makes me feel right at home, even if it is a little neater than mine. ;) ;D
Great Progress on the Snipe. Thanks for the updates!
Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hello James:
I think the color looks pretty darned right. It is what I am going to use on mine when I get to that stage. Looking good so far. Looking forward to seeing you progress through the build.

You're working your magic on the wee Snipe, James.

Thanks guys. Its going to be hard keeping my snipe mojo working. Just got my Roland C.II's today.

Hello James:
You gotta keep working on the Snipe, your work is motivating me to keep working on mine!!! 8)
We'll see where you direct your attention, back to the Snipe or the Walfisch.

Good work mate!!! Your workspace looks just like mine even the pieces of Tamiya tape ;) ;)

Thanks guys. A bit frustrated right now. Got decals on last night. Maybe I should have waited after the week I've had. The Pheon deals have lifted in places and I used Decal set this morning. Had a couple of areas break off. Will let it dry and see what to do next.

Okay, now how do you guys do the caster staining? I was wondering about spraying some smoke and then spraying some thin streaks of clear yellow then going over it with oil paint wash and some pastels? Anyone have a method I might investigate? So far I've seen 3 or 4 tips that I have incorporated into this build that have upped my game a bit so any ideas or critiques are more than welcome.
Getting close.
James
-
She's looking fantastic, James! The decals look great. Can't see any evidence of lifting, so I think you'll be fine.
Oil weathering can be done any number of ways. I prefer either thinned oils or water colors brushed on in the direction of airflow. I usually blend them or smooth them out with a cotton bud until I get the results I want. I also use pastels. Depends on if I'm going for new leaks or old stains. Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Looking good James. As Bud says, there doesn't seem to be any evidence of lifting.
I like the PC10 too, I think the WNW colour callouts are pretty good for the most part. The Snipe seems to be a popular kit to build at the moment. I'm back at home now and looking forward to doing some more work on mine.
Tom
-
Coming along nicely, James.
As regards, weathering, oil stains, etc. pretty much the same as Bud mentioned although I use washes created from my acrylic paints and then dry brushing.
Regards
Dave
-
This is looking really good James. The Snipe has never been one of my favourite aircraft, but you could persuade me otherwise with work of this quality.
Best wishes
Nigel

Beautiful work! I am going to mention he color again as I am Stuck on my build because I am still not sure I "Like" the Color. Your Tamiya color looks great in the pictures. In one the fuselage looks more brown and in another the color leans to brownish green. perfect in my opinion!
RAGIII
-
Outstanding modeling James! This is shaping up to be a beautiful Snipe in every respect. Keep up the great work!
Cheers,
Bob
-
Thanks guys. Not sure about outstanding, and definately not on par with what I see here, but I'm enjoying it. Bit of a set back this week though. Not really happy with how its finishing up. Just sitting on the wheels right now and rudder just dry fit. Shaking too much this morning so smoke on the lower wings looks iffy. Also a corner of a decal pulled up. Still soldiering on but I dont think I'll be taking this to any shows.

Nice work James-
Ref castor oil stains....I used AK Interactive Fuel Stains (AK 025) on the lower wing of my WNW Snipe.
I intend to airbrush some more on the underside of the cowling if I ever manage to complete the rigging.
Be aware too that the Aldis sight and windscreen are tricky to fit. I tried to be clever by mounting the sight on the top wing with the windscreen hanging loosely until the top wing was attached to the struts.
In the event it was a nightmare trying to align the windscreen into it's slot on the fuselage cowling. I would have been better fixing the windscreem first, then attaching the wing and then the sight in that order. Still not much space to work with between the upper wing and the fuselage though.
Good luck with the rest of the build!

Really like the bottom of the wing there. Mine looks horrid. I was shaking too much. Thanks for the heads up. Will try as you said.

Your Snipe is really starting to look the part now James, the colours you used are excellent and the decals look great, well done so far.
