Title: Fokker Scourge
Post by: miamiangler on April 07, 2013, 02:30:18 AM
Hello Everyone ,

I will be starting on the Fokker E.III (late) From WNW. It was a Christmas present from my daughter . I will be using the engine from Taurus Models and seat belts from HGW.

I started with the engine first . There`s lots of tiny parts so you have to take your time here !

Here`s the finished engine :

Brilliant work on the engine, Willi.  Those Taurus engines certainly build up into magnificent replicas, with the proper skills applied.

I hope the engine fits into the cowling. I will be watching this very closely, as that Fokker is one my watchlist.

Thanks Guys ,

Since this is the first Taurus engine I built . It came out O.K ,but next time I am going to put the small parts (#7 &#8) together first then glue the parts to the  main body #1. Then put part  #2 on to part #1 . then add #9 and make sure it is in the right position . Then add a small wire to part #9 that way it makes it easy to slide on  part#5 . Then you can add the spark plugs and add part # 8 which needs to be cut to size . Take your time here .rather cut it a little at a time or it will be too short ! Becareful when cutting part #5 ,I ruined 3 of them till I got the hang of cutting the part off the resin block. Thanks to Mr. Lukasz he sent me replacement parts . So a big Thank you goes out to him . Instead of using part #10 it was easier using a length of wire and then cutting it to it`s size . I hope this helps as this is how I will be building the next one when I build another Fokker E.II (early ).

As for the fit in the cowling .It is tight and the cowling will have to be thinned down .

Thanks Lance ,

I think the engine will look great in the Fokker E.III just too bad not much will be seen . I might for the next Fokker (In the Future ) I`ll build it with out the cowling .

  Here`s some more progress :

I am going to use matte bare metal foil for the metal parts . I have been trying for a few weeks to get the right pattern and think I am getting close to the effect I want .

Heres more work on the pit :

I didn't use foil on the dash I tried using the painting method . I also added copper wire and a clear plastic rod for the pulsameter A35 .To bad WNW did not make this part in clear plastic !

That`s all for now ,I`m just waiting on the HGW seat belts to arrive .I hope soon ::)

Why did you do that? Is this a feature typical for Eindeckers (I have no clue, that's why I'm asking)?

The metal parts look very very convincing.

Hi Stefan,

There`s  a photo in the instruction booklet and you can see the glass tube on top of the pulsameter and the copper wire was easier to replace then to paint the molded one on the IP.

Willi,
The Bare Metal Foil approach looks absolutely great and the cockpit is really getting impressive as you progress, nice work! My compliments for trying a different approach to the "burled" metal components, this may indeed be the final, and best, way of replicating that special effect.
Cheers,
Lance

Hi Willi,

great progress on your fokker. I am impressed by the look of the metal parts. The foil you've used is very convincing. I will also be interested on your progress on the cowlings. Is it possible to use the foil on those round /curved parts? The resine engine is a masterpiece and looks very realistic.

I think its time for a fokker group-build and especially because I am on the same stage in my build,  i will have a close look on your progress.

With kind regards,

Dirk

  @ Stefan,

I am sure it is the dinning room lights playing tricks ! It is still silver foil . The pit went together very well even with the bare metal foil on the interior side walls .! Dry fitting is still important . I did have to sand off the two bumps by the wing supports on the back end of the cockpit .

Thanks Ernie,

It`s been a while since I have done anything on the Fokker .I`m using Tamyia x-22 for my A/C. I did a 50/50 mix of white and German gray as a base coat .hen I taped up the wings and fuselage which was then sprayed with a coat of black over the tape . the area between the tape got a coat of German gray. This as far as I got today.

Hello Willi:

The metal work really looks the business.  The engine is outstanding and will surely enhance the front end of the model.  It is really coming along nicely.  I have this kit, but am a bit timid to try it at this time.  The burled metal is holding me back, so I am looking at yours and Dirks builds for tips.  Thanks for sharing, it really looks great.

Best

Willi, the cockpit is really looking the buisness!  The woodgrain is
completely believeable.
About the bare metal foil...which did you use for the cowling and
cockpit?  Was it the straight aluminum version or another? Thanks
for the help.

Can you please explain this in a bit more detail?  Did you use the disk to buff up a spot on the dull foil?  Was the foil in place when you did this or was it still on backing paper?  The marks look very convincing compared to the photos, and built up models I have seen.  Were these marks just machining marks on metal, or was there another purpose?  Great looking build so far.

Thanks for the comment s ,

Today I got some of the metal work done on the final pieces . All that is left to do is the jeweling which I will do in a few day`s . I finished the painting of the wings and fuselage. I added some Tamiya smoke to show the staining as seen on some of the photo`s of the real Fokker EIII`s. The decals went on with no problems ,but on the wings I used a mix of water and white glue before placing the large decals .

@ Ernie I used the Product Bare Metal Foil .It has a tacky backing that makes it easy to apply .

@ Isitwindyyet I put the foil on the part first then I use the demal tool with a toothpick and a small disk of sand paper glued on the end. Before doing the jeweling on the finished product I practice on a foiled piece of plastic to get right size of the lines.

Very sharp. Are you going to dull down/weather - just a bit- the metal work?

Hi Steve ,

I will do some weathering , with the camera flash it looks very bright. the wings still need some staining .

Thanks guy`s for your comments ,

It`s been a long while since I have looked at this kit . I have been waiting for the .04mm tubing to arrive from JBModel but no luck after e-mails . So now if anyone knows a company that sells micro tubing I can finish the Endecker and tripe I have been working on.

Well this is not WW1 but this showed up at my doorstep today .One of my Fav`s  little pricey but well worth it !

Hi Willi...I've got some 0.4mm brass tube from Model Hobbies in the UK.
Hopefully this will help...I'm really anxious to see more of your Eindecker.

Hi Rick,

I have been doing some diving and snorkeling on the weekends . Also work on my reef aquariums that I let go because of my modeling . Everything is back in order so I can start work as soon as I get some tubing . I dropped the tripe and it suffered some damage . working late at night and sleepy is not good for modeling !

Hi Bud ,

If I guess right it`s about the size of a 1/48th Lancaster .  Sorry no top wing on this bird but it will be fun doing the camo on this A/C.

What a wondeful job in your Eindecker.

The metal "metal" parts and fuselage weathering it's beyond what my simple english can express. To see what your skill can do among with so many others in this fórum... it's a real pleasure and quite an inspiration.

Thx for the pics. Very nice work.

Cheers.

If your nickname has anything to do with living in the U.S., Sprue Brothers carries it.

This is one of my favourite aircraft. I have the Tamiya 1/48 kit in my stash but from what I've read about this 1/32 release, the detail is amazing. Keep us posted as you build her.

Cheers,

Chris

  Hi Chris,

I have built the Tamyia 219 and it`s a nice kit . Last year I was at the nationals IPMS  Orlando and saw both the Revel and ZM 219 . After seeing the parts of both I preordered the ZM 219 . They really did their homework on this Aircraft .well worth the 191 dollars I spent on it !

Well the tubing is ordered so should have the tubing in about a week . Then I can get back to work on the Endecker. I do love my German aircraft from both war :).

    Thanks ,

               Willi

The foil takes some practice and takes some time to do but I think it came out OK for the first try.

Willi,
That's not O.K. , it's outstanding. I use the Bare Metal for hose clamps and wiring bundle straps etc. but never thought of this for the EIII. Nicely done!

Willi, hopefully without belabouring the foil bit too much,
Which Bare Metal foil did you use, they have several.  I thought
it was the matt Aluminum one, but it looks so shiny in your
pictures was it the Chrome sheet?

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Willi, great work, and a lot to look at. The BMF looks great, the machining marks are genius. you have ushered in a whole new approach to getting that bit right. I know I'll be trying it.

Willi, what Lance and California Mike said- that looks outstanding!  I also like the weathering on the fuselage, too.

This is a great build.

Thank you for all the comments ,

I have ordered the tubing I need ,but still not here so I have not done much on the model . As for the bare metal foil I used the Matte foil .

        Thank you,
