Here is my entry to the Forum GB. I plan to build the late incarnation of the WNW kit. BTW, it will be my third Fee and second night bomber - the first one was built right after the kit release in 2011. Then I built Jess, now it will be A852 known from the striking night photo of its preparation for the bombing mission.
The work is already well advanced, the cockpit for the starters.
The mods include the special treatment of the pilot backplate to be able to fill the nasty gaps along its joint with the cockpit rim, addition of two missing control levers - for the engine and radiator shutters and the internal rigging.

Great start on this one Prze 8)
Really interesting to see the cockpit brought to life (I'll copy a few of these pics for reference for when I get around to building a smaller version; much easier to see the bits in colour)

Exciting, another Fee on the way! This is an excellent start, lovely precise work as always. That cockpit looks so real......
-
That's looking terrific already, Prze. Top job!
-
A wonderful start - such clean and precise work as always!
Looking forward to seeing more!
Cheers,

Thank you for supporting with kind words.
The fuselage closed, the seam behind the pilot done. The work on Beardmore underway. Added oil tubes and electric cables omitted by WNW - there will be more additions necessary.

Lovely extra details on the Beardmore, well worth the effort.
-
Thank you, Ben and Nigel.
More additions to the Beardmore - cooling pipes for carbs, fuel lines, carb control rods, drainage for air intakes, nuts for the intake manifold connections.
Now I have to paint the fuselage, install the engine and connect the carb and magneto control cables to complete this jewel of the engine.

Stephen.
-
Lovely work - that extra detail really brings it alive.

Fantastic work so far Prze. Your improvements to the engine are exquisite.
Cheers,
Gary

Thank you for the nice words.
The fuselage painted, roundels on and subdued. The engine mounted and carbs and magnetos controls connected. Also, the radiator shutter controls which were very vague and had to go during the seam cleaning are rebuilt from scratch bits.

Thank you, Lady and Gentlemen.
Some recent progress - the u/c unit and the step mounted, the central bomb rack under assembly, and lots of parts cleaning underway.

That's the trouble with WWI aircraft, parts cleaning and prepping all the subassemblies takes ages! But then everything seems to go together quite quicky.....
-
Love it so far Prze. I could just climb into that cockpit and take it 'round for quick jaunt ;)
Paul

Beautiful work Prze. Very inspirational.

Looking fantastic- you are really moving along quickly. The mix of copper tones for the engine and night camouflage looks very nice.

It is very temping to build the Aeromaster kit in the stash .

Thank you, your interest and kind comments mean a lot to me.
Eyelets, eyelets, eyelets... The counter stands on 130 and it is still not the end. Also, there will be a couple of turnbuckles, too.
Twisting my own ones, trimming, mounting and checking for pull out. Oh, how I love this job....

Great progress! The model is really coming to life :)
And oh boy the rigging! Just soo much, but it also makes it unique!
Saw the FE.2 at the RAF museum in London, it was very impressive! Then I looked at all the rigging wires and thought about the kit in my stash... Yep going to take a while ;D
-
Thanks! Rigging... I have to admit, I love it. It is probably why I like so much those tail-boomers which evidently hang on the rigging lines.
More done - I have armed one of tail booms with the eyelets. After looking critically at my two previous Fees I decided that this time I will also replace the oversize eyelets molded by WNW with the wire ones. The original ones are too thick and they do not allow the monofilament line to properly tighten around them thus leaving undecent loops. This time it should look better.

I admire your precision drilling ability - what do you use for this? Just a pin vice and a small bit, or do you have something more sophisticated?

Prze,
I too am very impressed with your drilling and eyelet installation. I built this kit in the same scheme 10 years back and mentioned in the Build Log ( my Desk Top doesn't want to provide a link today but you can find the Build Log in the January 2016 Under Construction section if it will be of any assistance) that I had difficulty (self induced!) with installing the eyelets in the various delicate parts of the strut and lattice areas, you have cruised right through that challenge with some very clean and impressive work! This model has weathered the years very well and remains one of my very favorites and I'll be following your progress closely as you produce yet another of your spectacular Builds! Oh yes, the eyelets, I stopped counting at 118 with the Landing Gear assembly, center line bomb rack, and flight controls still to go!
Lovely work already showing and looking forward to the rest of this project!
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you, once more.
I admire your precision drilling ability - what do you use for this? Just a pin vice and a small bit, or do you have something more sophisticated?
Indeed, it is a pin vice and 0.4mm drill bits. I used to use 0.3mm ones but they were breaking very frequently and I also had difficulties with pressing the eyelets into the 0.3mm holes. Now with 0.4mm ones I have more resistant drills and more ease with mounting the eyelets (for these I use a 0.125mm fuse copper wire, so they are 0.25mm dia after twisting).

Well, I understand that drilling in the tailbooms elements is a bit tricky, but Fee has them so big that imho you can quite easily drill at a slight angle off perpendicular, which is just fine. I remember your build and I will try to find it, your models are always worth referring to, even if with two Fees at my belt I daresay this kit cannot surprise me anymore 8)
Anyway, I managed to mount and check for pull out all the eyelets. The counter stands at 230 (not counting the interior ones, about 50 of them).
And I fully agree with you, Lance. This WNW kit is a full pleasure to build, besides their Felixstowe and DH.9 family, forming my favourite trio.
I have two DH.9s and a DH.9a, only one Felixstowe (display space limitations) and now I am with the third Fee. Yet, if I have a chance to get a decently priced Early Fee, I will buy and hopefully build the fourth one ☺️
Back to this one, I have also mounted six turnbuckles for four drag lines and two rear cabane lines. And out of the sudden it seems the beast is ready for paint!
With this I had a plan to leave the struts and booms in natural wooden colour as per the Hendon Museum replica. It would be a nice colour touch to that otherwise sombre camo. But having studied the photos of four night Fees, including that striking night shot of A852 I am building, I had to admit that WNW were right with black painted wooden bits. Pity, but I have to stick to reality...

Thanks, that's good to hear as I have had exactly the same issues with .3mm drills. I guess I need some higher quality drill bits and a steadier hand.... :)
Pity, but I have to stick to reality...
As a certified rivet counter, I am very glad that is what you are doing ;) ;D

The undersides airbrushed with almost-black and readied for black shading.

Excellent, Przemol, as always 👍
Joerg

Thank you, Jorgo.
Long time, no reports but I was not idle. Quite contrary, I struggled with the remainder of airbrushing, decalling and shading more than I expected. The struggle included scraping of problematic cockade decals, which I had to replace with spares. Finally done! So are the Cooper bomb racks which also have some PE enhancement from HGW.

Well that's certainly looking the part Prze. Really enjoying following your progress and perfectly understand your fascination with the big ol' Fee :)
Interesting to note that the upper wing is in PC10 , but the tailplane has been painted black on top; presumably because it was much easier to access the tail
Paul

Beautiful fabric effects. Subtly done but oh so effective (as always!).
-
Just catching up Prez: the rigging is just awesome! The differences in shade of the colours is equally impressive and the bombs look just right too. Another real masterpiece in the making.
PS I too am a fan of the FE 2 series, and pushers generally..
Stephen.

I love the way you have done the black wings.

Beautiful work on the Fee, PrzemoL
-
Thank you, Bertl.
The next step - cabane struts. They sit very loosely in their sockets, so I am using the upper centreplane as a template and two interplane struts inserted without glue to control the geometry.
-
Coming along beautifully......
-
Next steps. The innermost pairs of interplane struts attached together with upper centreplane armed with gravity fuel tanks. Also the cabane lines were glued into their holes in the top nacelle. The glue is setting.
And the propeller readied, just the varnish seal for the wash is missing. It is only dryfit for getting the taste of the final look.

Thanks, Zac.
Today I attached the outer wing panels, second pairs of interplane struts and rigged 8 incidence lines.

Hi Przemo,
Excellent and clean work, as always.
I have a question. In the previous FE.2b (Jess) for the incidence lines i think you used combination of eyelets and tubes.
Now I see clear lines. What material is used and how did you attach it?
Spyros

Thank you, Alexis! :)

Hi Spyros. Many thanks for your kind comment. My first Fee was built some 15 years ago, when I used brass tubes for rigging. They may give an impression of turnbuckles but it was not intended. Fee had the RAF streamlined wires, no turnbuckles on the majority of rigging. Now I am using the polyimide tubing for securing the lines. And I continue to use the 0.12mm monofilament fishing lines, only that now I paint it with steel colour. Also the preparation of eyelet rigging stations is shown in some photos earlier in this thread.

Very impressive work, she's looking superb so far.

Main interplane rigging well underway, basically only the doubled lines to go. Also the bomb rack and u/c got their cables.

Wow, this is a stunner! Superb work.
Can I ask about your rigging with turnbuckles? It looks like you are using Modelkasten which is threaded through the turnbuckle glued to itself and then neatly trimmed. Is this how you do it? I think it looks very realistic.

Thanks, Nigel.
I am actually using a darkish monofilament fishing line of 0.12mm. I attach it to the eyelets or eyes in the turnbuckles using the tube method - more precisely I use a polyimide amber tubing with 0.279mm internal diameter cut to very short sections, about 0.5-1mm long. It is the method I described in the Rigging for Everyone presentation available in this forum section.
-
More excellent detail work and the turnbuckles are a great improvement on the PE items. 8)
Interesting to note that you wrap the roundel slightly around the hinge line since this was something I was discussing recently . . .
Paul
-
Beautiful work Prze. I really like the scheme and will certainly save this for future reference.
-
Absolutely fantastic. I wish I had the courage to do something with rigging this complex. You say that you use polyimide tube for rigging. I have looked for this but am unable to find anything suitable. Could I ask where you get yours from?

That is how WNW design their decals. When you attach the aileron in the neutral position that margin is barely visible but you do not see the dark edge.

This tubing used to be accessible on Amazon with delivery world wide. Before pandemic... Now it is a truly huge problem to get. I spent many months looking for it and could only find the catalogues from the manufacturers who offered gross trades. But then, luckily I managed to locate a US medical supply company (that tubing is a medical material for micro vessels) who offered free samples. And they agreed to send them to Poland, even knowing that I would use those for atypical purposes ;). I used the oportunity, got the parcel and now I daresay I have a stock for the rest of my life. I am sorry to deliver this type of answer only...
-
No worries, thanks for the reply. Might have to look into free samples then.

I have just found the packing with the company name - Zeus. And I also found the package label reminding me that I actually ordered it not entirely privately but to my employing university - probably it was a requirement they made. Sorry, that I do not remember more details. Anyway, good luck in your search.

That exactly is my idea that those tubing attachment points are barely visible, here possibly playing the role of British type screw fittings to which the wires were screwed.
Some progress of today. I started the assembly of the tail truss. It is only dryfit to the wings for the time being to control the geometry. And so is the rudder, just to add some flavour. When dryfitting it turned out, that I had to replace a pair of cables in one field because they stressed the booms on the right-hand side too much causing excessive bending. Now this issue is fixed and the geometry is decent. Next steps there will be the rigging in two rear transverse fields. Then I will dare to attach the tail booms to the wings and rig them for good with the remaining lines. Then the tailplane should jump on - it is now ready for that move.
The main problem with structural rigging of the flimsy booms structure is that you have to control the rigging stress, not to deform the truss. Ideally it would be to rig simultaneously pairs of cables but you would need four hands to do it. So it is often trial and error procedure. And sometimes the cables have to be cut out and replaced. Up till now I am happy to report that only one pair had to be replaced. ;)

Those final stages of rigging look quite scary..... But you've done these before so hopefully it will all go smoothly. She is looking really good.

I AM scared, Nigel. But somehow I manage to progress.
The tail booms are definitively attached and tightened to the wings with first 4 cables. The elevator cables with their pulleys are routed, too, though not tightened yet. The rudder still only dryfit.
And there are still 11 lines missing to rig finally the tail. Then the tailplane will be attached and the birdie will be put on its legs to see if the rigging holds and does not slacken...

Thanks for sharing so many SBS photos, it's really helpful and inspiring to see you progress through such a complex build.

Thanks, Alexis and Nigel.
I call it a day. 9 tail stiffening lines added, just 2 missing. Apparently the geometry of the tail is not distorted but adding the tailplane will be the final moment of truth. The elevator cables tightened and glued to the pulleys on the upper booms. 4 drag lines added. Bomb racks with Coopers and the main bomb added. The silver side step shield made from self adhesive metal foil. Bomb sight, toggles and small tubing routers for Bowden cables added (the cables should come tomorrow). And the Holt flares almost ready for attachment.
The end is closer and closer. :)

The works on the tail proceeded. First I attached the rudder, its cables and their branches to the tailskid.
Then I mounted the tailplane with its rigging and elevator cables. Also the Holt flare mounts got their tiny rigging.
With these I put the wheels on, dryfitting them (they are not fully painted yet) and dared to put the Night Fury on the wheels. And voila! Luckily all the cables are tight, no serious deformation occured when the supports changed!

Fantastic looking Fe2b Prze. Gorgeous work. I'm always impressed by your attention to getting the important things looking right. Stunning result and a great addition to your collection. The extra effort you put in to getting rid of those tricky seams inside the cockpit is one of the aspects of this build that I love to admire.
Cheers,
Gary
