Time for the new project.
Albatros D.V from Jasta 5, 1/72, Eduard kit, Part PE especially for the interior truss, Roden Mercedes engine and probably some scratch.
Scraping of interior of fuselage halves has just begun.

A nice project, I'm looking forwards to see what you do with all that photoetch in this tiny scale..... :)
-
Slow progress.
Assembly of PE interior truss is tricky. And Eduard plastic is quite hard and not east to remove. But for now - going forward.

That looks pretty daunting....... Don't breathe too hard on that photoetch!
-
Hi Przemek
I didn't realized that, those PART PE set will fit to Eduards model.
-
Great start to this build Prze. I?ve never had any luck getting the Part PE interior framing to fit into the Roden kits. But I never sanded away the molded details. Looking forward to seeing how all this works out for you.
All the best,
Tim
-
The Part interior truss can be squeezed into the fuselage only after the sides are substantially thinned, does not matter if it is Roden or Eduard or any other kit. I have done it several times on various kits including Albatros D.II and D.III. But it is my debut with D.V.
So scraping the interior and assembling the truss continues. Scraping will keep my busy for some more time certainly...

Lovely to see that brass-work Prze (shame most of it'll disappear later) ::)
I seem to spend a lot of time sanding and thinning parts and as you mention the Eduard plastic, whilst lovely and sharp, can be hard work. Doesn't look like you've got too far to go now though :D

The engine cowling will be off, cockpit opening is quite large, lots of the interior truss will be seen.
And there is still some thickness to go ;)

Well done for getting that etch to fit without squashing it!
-
Impressive work in that scale! The PE would scare me, but you make it look great ;D
-
I don't envy you all that work, Prze, but you're doing a great job. Bravo!
-
Thank you.
It looks like the thinning reached the goal. The truss sits well inside. And Mercedes, too.

Very impressive as always Prze!
One question; should the upper stringer in the nose be level with (or just below the line of) the plywood panel? It could just be the way that it's dry fitted that makes it stick up a bit proud.
Otherwise, looking forward to yet another master class!
Cheers

Very impressive work, Prze. Your level of patience for a job like that is very admirable.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Thank you, Brad. Your absolutely correct remark triggered the decision to rebuild the interior. I decided to split it into twoand disassemble to be able to correct also the not inline longerons... Keep your fingers crossed. ;)

The truss split into two. Reassembled, some more scraping in the front and finally it fits, with the engine and with the upper longerons aligned with fuselage rim.

Looking good so far ...
Alexis

Love-el-ey!
:)

Thank you for your approval. 😉
And in the meantime lots of fun with PE and scratch details for the cockpit and Mercedes engine.

Some great, dedicated work there. Looking sharp!
Warren

That is all simply amazing for 1/72!
-
Thanks, Warren and Nigel.
Today just two bits, but built from scratch - fuel and oil tanks.
-
Man alive!
How you boys work in 72nd is beyond my comprehension.
I'm glad you do, cos I get to watch and marvel.
Nicely done, Prze!
Bob ;)
-
Prze!
How did you create the spouts, filler caps for the fuel tank?
Warren
-
Prze!
How did you create the spouts, filler caps for the fuel tank?
Warren
Short sections of plastic round profile or soldering wire glued into drilled holes. Caps from spare PE discs.
-
The seat. Kit part has thick walls, Part PE is surprisingly too narrow. So I decided to thin the walls of the kit part from the outside.
And some more bits added to the engine - flywheel and water pump with the pipe.
-
More impressive attention to detail, well done.

Very nice additions! Looks great :)

Looking great!
Warren

Fantastic workmanship! I suppose that you are planning to open some hatches around the engine in order to show things off?

Lovely work Prze! You've got me wanting to crack open my 1/48th version.

Looking awesome so far Prze !
Alexis

Thank you, Lady and Gentlemen.
I have started colouring and assembly. Setting the four bars and four fittings for the seat base was tricky and time consuming but... ended with a success.

Always a treat when Przemol does his magic with 1/72. He is to 1/72 what William Adair is to 1/144!

Superdetailing in 1/72 scale - This is a job for a watchmaker, I am amazed. Bravo!!

Bertl

Thank you, senores.
But...
Always a treat when Przemol does his magic with 1/72. He is to 1/72 what William Adair is to 1/144!
my ordinary assembling is light years behind William's amazing scratchbuilding skills...
Two more bits under way - Spandaus from kit and PE parts.

As Bertl already has used the watchmaker comparison I just can say . . . Wow . . .

Indeed, here's a Rolex watchmaker at work in 1/72!

Ooooooooooooo , Nice !

It's all so neat and tidy! Very good work!

That wash really made it come alive my friend.

Thank you for watching and leaving nice comments. :)
Now the cockpit section is glued into the right hand fuselage half, the tail control cables tightened and fully ready for closing - but that tomorrow.

It is a shame to close up that beautiful interior. Good thing you have taken these amazing photos.
Warren Q
-
What Warren Q said above!
Warren D
-
But dear Warrens, lots of it will be visible throught the cockpit opening. I would regret closing if I had the complete internal structure. :)
-
Looking fabulous Prze (and as Warren says it's almost a shame to see it swallowed up by the other half of the fuselage)
Really enjoying this build so far thanks for all the detailed photo's
Paul

Your moving right long on this one , fab work so far Prze !

Absolutely superb, and I am so glad that there will be quite a lot visible because it is stunning work.

This level of detail in 72nd is breathtaking!
Joachim

Thank you!
A small progress. Removal of wrongly placed cooling louvres and one too many inspection covers, the former ones will be replaced with Part PE details. Also, the spurious inspection covers on the lower wings underside pertaining to D.Va version removed.
And finally the tail bits attached and joints filled with CA glue as a putty.

Beautiful!

The work goes on. The lower wing attached, seams cleared, primer set, PE fittings glued to the fuselage, some more will come later. And the exhaust and Spandaus got the colours.

Oh god the size of those PE parts :o
Very impressive progress - looking good :)

Now comes the fun part , painting
Alexis

Yes, painting!
Wings undersides airbrushed and shaded.

Cool! I am a great admirer of your subtle rib tape highlighting technique (which I now use myself). IMO this is a realistic approach that uses some artistic licence to enhance the model and make it visually interesting.
-
Very neat! Looking forward to more paint.

Thanks!
And the upper sides

Beautiful work Prze! As mentioned earlier, I'm experimenting with trying to do some rip tape highlights, which in our scale, isn't easy. Your work inspires me to carry on with that.
Warren D

Great colours! Any particular brand/recipe for the purple and green? And I agree with Warren that the ribs are well done and help bring the surface to life.

Thanks.
That shading is not difficult. 0.4mm Aizu tapes and a mist of clear-black mix with black just to give the tint, far clearer than the notorious smoke colour. Some practice is necessary to get your favourite proportions, which also should depend on the darkness of the base colour. It is optimal imho that you get the required hue after 3-4 airbrush passes which allows to control the intensity.

/Fredrik
Unfortunately the colours are the custom mixes of Vallejo basic colours: Purpura Real with Gris Claro and Verde Refractorio with Gris Claro. Both green and purple were too intensive without the addition of grey.
-
Thanks Prze! I have heard a number of modelers complain about Tamiya smoke. I have wondered if just plain black would be too stark, even thinned that much.

Warren D
It is always best to find your own proportions. For the light blue grey here I used 6 drops of clear and just a trace of black - the toothpick end touched the black paint drop.
-
Really enjoying your updates and hints'n'tips along the way, Prze. Fantastic work indeed.
Cheers,
Gary
