Title: Sort of Shelf Queen LVG build
Post by: DaddyO on March 10, 2025, 07:35:13 PM
I'd intended this one to be an entry into the Shelf Queen group build, but didn't take any photos of the earlier stages, but it's being completed in the spirit of the event anyway.

It's KP's version of the LVG CVI (based on the old Ardpol kit?) and is really nice. It's easily the best of KP's ww1 kits that I've seen and needs only a few details adding if you are that way inclined. I started it some time last year by cutting parts out and making replacement struts, but didn't get much further before being distracted by other models  ::)

Anyway I've been working on it since the Bovington show in early February to see how long it actually takes me to build a model (hoping to get it ready for the event at Yeovil this weekend, but sadly it's going to miss that by a week or so)

A couple of early pics showing the woodwork and extra details on the bottom of the fuselage. The model is based on a profile that appeared in the Wingnut Camel/LVG build magazine chosen because of the cut down winter cowl and upright exhaust that gave it a slightly different look.

Wings were covered in Aviattic lozenge with rib tapes from Eduard. (Spray in white primer, add gloss coat, decal, gloss coat, add rib tapes, remove 'clear' decal film and add varnish coat)

You may notice the factory fresh finish of the elevator compared to the faded tail with a couple of linen patches just to break up the finish.
Since I like to use fishing line 'through the wing' the bottoms were covered and finished then lines were threaded and top holes dressed off/filled before gloss and decals could be added.

Ooh this is looking very nice. The lozenge decals look great. But I am not sure why you are rushing, there is no show at Yeovil this weekend unless you know something I don't.... The next Yeovil model show is Sunday April 6th.

Fuselage was painted in pale ochre colour before the usual oil paint wood graining masking off panels and drying before moving onto the next

Once everything had dried properly a coat of gloss varnish and it was time to raid the decal bank for suitable items  :D
The model number was cut from individual numbers on a Pheon Dr1 sheet with the 'LVG' and '/18' salvaged from the original KP sheet. Cross from a spare Eduard sheet, white panel cut from blank sheet and the '8' from a very old sheet of unkown origin although it needed slitting and re-touchng to get the narrow style needed. The rigging instructions and 'lift here arrows and instructions' were hand painted since I couldn't find anything suitable.

;D Ahead of myself as usual (I turned over two pages on the calandar) Still on the plus side it does mean I might get it finished for then!

Lovely looking wood grain, very effective. This is going to be a beaut!

You did have me worried for a moment because I wasn't ready for a show this weekend! At least you have no excuses for not finishing it ...

The Lozenge looks terrific as does the fuselage. Your wood grain is perfect for the scale!

My, my, my...I have a Datafile showing up today in the mail so I can work on the BM LVG C.VI in 1/48 scale.
I hope mine comes out half as well at twice the size.

Delicate and petite, loverly....

The Aviattic decal isn't the easiest to use in this scale I've found, but having tried on a couple of other models I was up for it and found that trimming using a brand new double edged razor blade worked much better than a new scalpel blade and using thinned white glue to stick down the edging worked better than hoping the adhesive would hold it in place

There's a great election of photo's taken by James Fahey of the flying one that include loads of lovely close ups that can be tricky to read in old photos

Thanks Paul, wonderful reference. Had I known about that I may not have bothered with the Datafile.
But who am I kidding, the LVG and a SS D.III Datafile came yesterday.
Looking forward to more progress, you guys are really putting the screws to me with the beautiful 1/72 scale builds.

Looking good Paul, and the wood grain is excellent!

Thanks matey.  :)
I found the last one I did that using straight yellow ochre the grain looked a bit 'thin' so this time I mixed a touch of lead white (or mixing white) with it which made getting a nice grain much easier. Effectively it meant that you were painting a 'solid' layer of oil paint rather than wiping away to leave streaks of grain. took a bit longer to dry, but I like the effect.

Nice work!  Your efforts are really paying off...The Aviattic lozenge looks great.

Cheers Kreston.
Not the easiest of decals to use, being quite thick and stretchy. That said if you treat it like a different material rather than a 'decal' life gets easier and the colours are lovely  ;D

Not much progress this week with work and home life taking up most of my avaialable 'free time'. Got up early the last couple of mornings to get things moving along and after one abortive attempt (sanded the tip too thin on one blade so I lost the shape) I've managed to get a prop carved for this

Now we're getting somewhere  ;)

Jig knocked up from foam board. You'll also notice the non-standard exhaust which was made up from stretched sprue (Typical that I'd pick a model that needed something different adding; the 'winter' shroud was also cut down from full depth although that wasn't quite so tricky to sort out)
Machine gun is from an Eduard kit (DVII from memory) and I'll add the windscreen and other cockpit details once it's sitting on it's wheels

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54402854634_db8e326beb_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2qToRjj)LVG on jig (https://flic.kr/p/2qToRjj) by Paul S (https://www.flickr.com/photos/202177392@N05/), on Flickr

And here it sits. Top wing in place and everything square. To try and avoid my usual superglue mess I've used epoxy for the struts and will turn it over and add superglue to the top joints later and then we'll see if I can get all the various cables into the right place without losing any  ::)

Glad you like it Alexis. Do break out the Blue Max kit; it'd be a lovely model in 48th 8)

Just about there with the rigging now. Here's what I've made for helping with this stage having managed using an open hardback book for that same job for the last couple of years  ::) Some scrap 6 mm MDF  pieces from a DIY project slotted but not glued into a base piece so it can lay flat and out of the way until required.
Next is clean up and apply decals to the bottom of the lower wing

Yes, there are an incredible amount of corrections needed to the kit.
Unfortunately, my WNW LVG has been sitting on the shelf for a few years in its original state.
There is a construction report in the German airplane forum (www (point) Flugzeugforum.de), more in-depth and with considerably more pictures than was the case here in the forum.
However, you have to register there to see the pictures.

Crack on with the WW version - I've saw a finished one in the flesh last year and it just looks 'right' (In fact it was the inspiration for this build) ;)

Anyway underwing decals are now done and drying waiting for last varnish coat  :)
After clean up of rigging, touch up and then add gloss coat, then Aviattic lozenge, another gloss coat then Eduard rib tapes then after 24 hours remove the clear carrier film from the rib tapes and add tape around edge (Aviattic lozenge printed on white film rather than the usual clear) using thinned PVA as adhesive, let dry then add crosses, then pause for breath and have a coffee  8)

Busy week at work coming up so will be some early morning starts to get it ready for Sunday

Paul

ps - just spotted I need to trim up the edging strip still . . .  :-\

Apologies for the lack of updates, but I did manage to get this one done (sort of) for the show  ;D

The kit undercarriage legs seemed a bit long compared to photo's and plans so need a couple of mm trimming from them and having done that I replaced the axle and spreader bar with scratchbuilt items. Bungee cords from cotton thread. Tailskid was okay, but I couldn't get the model to 'sit' correctly with it so made up a new one from filed brass rod, brass wire and superglue which looks better.

A few details added to the rear cockpit with a Miniworld machine gun (I was tempted to use a Lewis that can be sen in several photos of LVG's, but decided to save that idea for another model)

Anyway here are a few detail pics and a couple of it mounted on it's new base
