I would like to apologize for my absence and lack of comments on all your posts. I have loosely followed but have been bogged down with work and family. Little time for modeling the last six months with only one competition to speak of.
With that said, here is my next endeavor. I have wanted to build this kit for some years now. This is quite complicated with intricate strut and engine mounts.
Seven bags of resin goodies to fret over. All the parts are beautifully cast and detailed. The parts fit is excellent as expected from Choroszy.
One small imperfection is the two fuselage halves are slightly warped at the tail
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202501/2970975_e6c22a9e0ebb852e1b7f6a4052a4ad70.jpeg)
A quick bath in very hot water softened the resin enough to bend into shape.
The fit is good enough now. I think the CA glue will hold it sufficiently.
The interior is nicely designed but I added a few more framing touches with Evergreen strip.
Next, after priming with Tamiya white, I sprayed the base wood color (Tamiya dark yellow acrylic).
Next , after it dried, I added a liberal covering of Windsor Newton burnt umber artist oil paint.
I?ll let it dry for an hour or two before I start removing the oil paint with a dry soft bristle brush.
Thanks for looking in!

Very nice model Tim. I had never heard about this plane. You made an excellent start on it. I'll follow with much interest.
-
Looking forward to this Tim
(I've got the similarish Choroszy Friedrichshafen GIII on the shelf and although I've opened the box a couple of times it's still sitting there . . . .)
Paul
-
What a great subject. I can't wait to see this one made.
Alan.
-
What a fantastic choice! I lusted over this kit many times when I was building 1/72 kits. You've made a great start.
-
Wow! What a choice! I never thought seeing this guy being built, following with great interest as I have this kit!
-
Hi Tim, I have this kit amongst several other Choroszy's in my Stash.I had built The Friedrichshafen GIIIa as one of my first resin kits about 20 years ago and I'm still proud of it .
I'm looking forward on your build as a welcome motivation to start mine !
-
Thanks all for commenting on my build. Paul, hopefully I can inspire you to build the Friedrichshaven! Manaula, I?d really like to see your build also. I have that kit to build someday and would like to have more reference points.
I removed as much of the burnt umber paint as I thought looked appropriate with a dry brush. Frequently wiping it clean on a cloth. After it dried I began painting the interior details and slowly adding them. I added some brass photo etch instrument dials, wire chain to the steering columns, and Eduard PE seatbelts.
Next I began working on the two Austro Daimler 345 HP engines.

Wowzer 8)
Inspirational so far Tim
(I'm off to see how badly warped the bits of the Friedricshafen are . . . .) ;)
Paul
-
I missed the start of this, you are doing your usual masterful job !!
-
Superb work Tim, that interior and those engines look fantastic.
-
Holy Buckets, Tim. That will be amazing. Great start so far! Keep her coming and don't put it back on the shelf!!!!

Fuselage: Part 4
The fuselage join was not exact as in test fits.
I imagine this was due to all the interior bulkheads and engines. The worst part was the bottom seam. I spent a lot of time filling in the gaps

After sanding I?m ready for primer to check the bodywork.

Underside has this attached structure. I believe it?s a bomb rack of some kind. I?m unsure because it will be located directly above the suspended lower wing.
The body was base coated with Tamiya dark yellow. Next, individual panels were hand painted with thin coats of Tamiya deck tan and dark tan
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202502/2970975_65aa3a4a8aded08f651be0d0a9f48fd7.jpeg)
Then each panel was painted with very thin coats of burnt umber artist oils. I varied the grain direction of panels.

Here?s the completed fuselage. I added more thinned coats of artist oils burnt umber till the panels looked more natural.
Prior to that I added nail heads with a rivet tool and dark pinwash to panel lines.
Finally sealed everything in with a coat of Future

Wow Tim. That's looking great.
We were chatting at the show yesterday about this model being built and I can't recall ever seeing one before - each stage gets more exciting 8)
Paul

Holy Moly! I just now found this! That's some beautiful wood-grain work for the scale. I'm still trying to get a handle on it. You've succeeded greatly here. Looking forward to the rest of it.
Warren
-
Wow also just found this build - really interesting subject choice and the wood grain fuselage looks very nice indeed!
-
Very interesting subject, with the unusual engine installation and its general size.
I have no experience with building resin kits yet and I do have a few warped ones. I always wondered how the heating technique would work.
If someone could make it work it's probably you Tim. I'll keep watching the G.I come to life with great interest!

Thank you Warren. It looks great to the eye but man, when you zoom in it looks pretty bad!

Thanks Patrick. Hoping to post more soon.

That looks like a lot of work on the fuselage seam but it's turned out really well. Super work on the wood grain, the whole build continues to look amazing. Please keep going!

I always am reluctant to put such delicate resin in scalding water. Seems like I would retrieve a melted mess! I have done this several times now with excellent success. Most have remained straight for several years as well. Only two kits have drooped wings over time. I hope you do try one out. They are not as intimidating as they seem.
Thanks,
Tim

Thanks Nigel. I?ll finish this one. I like to see a project through once I start it. No partial build ?Shelf Queens? in my stash! Lol

That wood grain is gorgeous, bravo!
-
Home run on the fuselage, I'm sure the tail and wings will look great as well.
-
Part 5. Wing works
I began assembling the three part upper and lower wings as well as the tail flying surfaces. The main wings have small resin pegs and holes in the mold for attachment points. I don?t feel that they would be of sufficient strength to hold it together so I added brass rod attachments. A little filler was required at the seams
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202502/2970975_01480aa1c34ded44c311c3def7f5f7c6.jpeg)
Next I primed them with Tamiya white rattle can primer.
Then I began cleaning up the tail parts and primed them. I added brass attachment pins to these parts as well. I had to take care when making the attachment point holes in the fuselage because of the unusual elevator design.
After priming, I masked the main wing spars and painted them and the lower surfaces a dark brown color. I then drew in the wing spars with an orange Posca paint pen. Finished with penciled in support wires
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202502/2970975_9bdcc6cdafedebe8ec028117ce5df432.jpeg)
Tomorrow I will paint the first coat of Vallejo aged white over the upper surfaces
I also added the tail skid and repainted the (now what I believe to be) underside fuel tank a grey green color.

Great progress Tim. This is coming on well.
Alan.
-
Great progress!
-
You are a brave man Tim. I have Choroszy Modelbud's Caproni CA3. The bags of resin bits are very daunting to me.
Your build will absolutely help me to gather enough courage to start building it one day.
This is stunning work you show here especially the paintwork. And in this scale!
Cheers,
Willem
-
Unusual subject - great progress

-
This is excellent modelling. Great work on assembling those thin wings into a sturdy structure, and the fabric show through is going to look excellent.
-
Part 6. Flying Surfaces
The flying surfaces have been over sprayed with a light coat of Vallejo aged white.
Here the tail surfaces have the rib masks removed after a light coating of aged white.
I will do the main wings later.

This is the final coating of aged white on the upper surfaces. After it dries, I?ll mask all the ribs again and paint a light mist of Tamiya clear smoke to highlight the rib tapes.
A lot of work to try and get that translucent look!
Thanks for looking in.
Tim
-
Wow, that is an amazing amount of ribs. Beautiful results as usual.
You really are pushing me closer and closer to that 1/72 scale rabbit hole....
-
A lot of work to try and get that translucent look!
A lot of work but well worth it! The finished result is fantastic, well done.
-
Part 6. Tail Feathers
Lots of progress this weekend. I finished masking and painting the eleven separate pieces that make up the tail rudders and elevators. Assembly was quite tricky and it?s not exactly straight, but close enough for me.

I had a near disaster with the starboard side Eisernes Creuz decal. I applied a gloss surface to adhere to and it sucked right down and wouldn?t budge! Finally got most of it loose and into place. Had to hand paint some repair work because I couldn?t find a correct size replacement.
All the bracing support rods are brass rod cut to fit and CA glued in place.
I still need some support connecting rods on the rear tail upper and lower controls. Also need to rig the control cables before moving onto attaching the lower wing.
Thanks for looking in!
Tim

Excellent work on the body panels and tail, actually everything is looking good so far.
No doubt this is going to be a great model!
-
Superb work Tim, that is looking fantastic. I nearly bought this kit several times and seeing how much work it is, I'm glad I didn't! You are making a fine job of this.
-
This is amazing and very cool to watch, thanks.
-
It is surprising that this thing actually flew. It looks as heavy as hell.
Alan.

Catching up on some of the Excellent builds going on. Yours is No exception. The masking on the wings is Insane! The fuselage wood grain/tone is Gorgeous. Stunning work all around!

Love this choice of build, as future group build it should be anything not seen before!!!

Choroszy kits are not for the faint-hearted modelers, especially those larger and more complex ones. Your work on this is spectacular, to say the least. Looking forward to more progress.

Part 7. Play stupid games and win stupid prizes!
Well, I come home last Thursday afternoon and went to my modeling desk. I was attempting to add the last elevator/ rudder connecting rods when I let the model slip and nosedive into the tile floor! I heard the impact and undeniable skittering of parts across the room. In disbelief and shock I began to assess the damage.
I was surprised to find the fuselage relatively intact. The tail came apart but only one broken tip of the left tail fin where a brass reinforcement pin broke out.
Lost one control horn and it took a chip of paint with it.
The nose suffered a large chip of paint but didn?t break any resin. Surprisingly all the interior parts remained intact.

There was a small break in the fuselage seam in front of the pilots cockpit area. The rest of the seam held beautifully.

I finished the tail section but forgot to take any pictures.
Hoping to get more progress on it next weekend.

ARRRRRRGH! :o
Done this myself on several occasions (you'd think I would learn) So glad to see that the damage wasn't too extensive and is already repaired. Looking forward to the next (hopefully not too exciting) update ;)
Paul
-
Oh dear, we've all been there. Very glad to see this didn't sabotage the build because I want to see this one completed.
-
Thanks Paul, Nigel. I?m relieved that I hadn?t had the wings attached yet.

Same here. I dropped My WNW DH2 and the whole tail assembly came loose. Only held on by the rigging! You have made an excellent recovery! Happy to see that the mishap has turned out well.

Part 8. Lower wing attachment.
I spent several hours masking all the ribs for the second time Friday. I only had the Mojo to complete the lower wing because it was my next choice for assembly.
This brings to mind a big drawback to the construction of these resin kits. There are no clear step by step instructions, numbered parts, or any other clear part distinction. Only a crude exploded drawing for assembly. And when building an experimental aircraft, I can only find three photographs for reference.
Anywho, here is the completed lower wing. I overdid the Tamiya clear smoke and had to overshoot another light coat of Vallejo aged white.
Once that was sufficiently dry, I needed to plan out how to attach it to the fuselage.
I ended up going with the kit resin spars because they were pre molded as one piece. I drilled holes and added brass rod attachment points. ( Only stuck the drill bit into my fingers twice) 🥴
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202503/2970975_bd99863593eb077528556b9ae288a5ab.jpeg)

Here?s an overview of the project as it sits. Trying to decide if I should do the propeller structures or mount the upper wing next.

If you zoom in on the wing, you can see faintly see the spars and bracing wires.
Thanks for all the encouraging comments and

'Propeller structures or upper wing'. I would do first whatever is least likely to get broken while doing the other.

Great progress and great recovery work on this model.
Given the hyper-complex nature of its design, one should bear in mind that Austria is also the home of Sigmund Freud and psycho analysis . . .

Coming along quite well Warren . I'm taken by your wood effect , love it !

Part 9. Upper wing
Time definitely seemed limited this weekend. All sorts of distractions kept me busy and away from the bench. But, despite that I did get the upper wing completed and started working on the struts.
The lower wing ribs, framework, and internal structure was masked.
Then lightly overspray with Model Air aged white
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202503/2970975_21fc1d445b20adee36ef9a098c33bcc0.jpeg)
Framework masking was removed and the rib masks were peeled back so they may be reapplied after the next painting.
Light layers of aged white were sprayed until it looked transparent
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202503/2970975_976955f39c25ece7f31ffd2a6718715a.jpeg)
After it dried, I reapplied the rib masks and oversprayed Tamiya clear smoke to highlight the ribs. This was overdone with my heavy handed airbrush work again. I needed to apply another light aged white layer after the masks were removed. Next I applied the kit decals. I forgot to apply decal film and they cracked up pretty noticeably. They needed to be touched up to cover the cracking.
The upper wing is actually the same span as the lower but looks smaller in the picture.
I painted and added the landing gear supports
Now the model has legs to rest on
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202503/2970975_567abc37222ad9381f22e85b15b82897.jpeg)
The kit resin interplane struts are way too flexible to provide any structural support for the upper wing
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202503/2970975_fa3fd687e17c77f6aa13f34037dfdd0d.jpeg)
My first choice was to fabricate the struts from brass strip but I didn?t have any that looked thick enough for this large model
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202503/2970975_6dcff2493b12ffdbfdb1a0cb122c5f07.jpeg)
I decided on using Contrail strut material. It?s a little too wide when compared to the plans but will look just fine when used.
The strut is same width as the brass one just looks larger in the image
(https://attachment.tapatalk-cdn.com/45241/202503/2970975_c1acb5d2adff3b7594ce4a47c3c9c43a.jpeg)
I?ve added some brass attachment pins to the ends.

This really is a major project Tim, a lot of work involved and I am glad you are sticking with it because I am keen to see this one built. Excellent work on the wing and the struts.

This one looks absolutely magnificient. So good details and the materials look just like the real thing, great stuff.

Part 10. Upper wing attachment:
Despite having a full agenda this weekend, I was able to make serious progress on this build.
The struts were painted and wooden stain left to dry over the previous week. The struts attachment points were faired in with sheet metal. I replicated this with Tamiya tape covered in CA glue.

Starting with the four innermost struts, they were glued in place. Then the upper wing was attached and alignment checked. Gradually adding the rest of the struts working outwards.
Thank heavens the attachment pin holes were aligned properly!

I then began the rigging process with fine black EZline.

Next steps will be to add the propeller shaft structure and radiators.

That is magnificent.
I'm still thinking we all need to see your collection some how. I've been following you builds for years and i remember what's in there...

Awesome work! I have never been able to drill and pin struts, especially ones that size ::) Looks fantastic with the wing mounted and rigging installed!

Thank you all for your supportive comments.
Part 11. Drivetrain construction:
This turned out to be the most challenging task so far. Originally, I planned on using the kit resin framework pieces. These did not clean up well and were warped.
I decided to scratch the entire structure with brass rod. I?ve never had good results with soldering. It seems to not adhere to the brass so I just CA glued it all together. I started with measuring and mounting the drive shaft and gear boxes.

Next I added the brass rods one by one. This turned out better because I was able to drill location holes in the fuselage for support.

I painted the forward rods before adding the rear ones for easier access.
Here are a few pictures of the completed structures.

I also completed the propellers and radiators.

Then I decided to start working on the eight wheels. I hate doing wheels, especially eight of them! The kit supplied ones seemed too small compared to the picture. I decided to cast some larger ones I had. One ended up with a big air bubble that I later filled with putty

All the wheels cast and two axels scratched up from metal. I didn?t want this beast resting on brittle resin axels.

Next came the machine gun cage for the observers. I?m going to try and use the resin parts here.

I have to hollow out the center and clean up the edges. This drill and bit came in very handy.

Here is the result of very patient shaving and filing. Only lost one little connection piece!

I should be able to finish this one up by next weekend.

Fascinating Tim, great work!

Wow, well done on that drive train, excellent modelling there. And as for those gun rings, don't breathe too heavily on them....... ;)
-
Great work there Tim, resin is always a challenging job, I imagine how brittle those rings are!
-
Beautiful progress.

Finally managed to finish this one. It?s been a most challenging kit to build but enjoyable nonetheless. I don?t think this could be built out of the box with all the thin resin struts and flash ridden parts. I used a lot of brass rod and strip.
Here?s one picture, I?ll post the rest in the completed section.
