Jorgo beat me to it! I am also building the CSM early Nieuport 11 in the Escadrille 3 scheme of Georges Raymond. The kit is so lovely I could not resist it. This will be a "quick" out of the box build but to be honest the kit is so good it doesn't need any extras. I have the lovely 3D engine which is supplied with preorders. This is superb, although a couple of the push rods were distorted because they got attached to the cylinders during the printing process. This won't be an issue though as they will be hidden under the cowling.
Here's a few pics of the engine:

The intake pipes are painted with copper printer's ink, a tip I picked up from David Lane. This gives a very realistic finish.
I've painted all the wood parts of the interior so there won't be any more updates until the oils have dried. This should be by early next week.....

Very nice matey 8)

Beautifully chlorinated Le Rhone, Nigel! I totally agree with you, the kit is so good it can be built oob. And thanks for the tip with copper printer's ink.
I'm looking forward to your next update.
Cheers

What a stunning model in itself the engine! Well done :D
-
Super job on the engine, Nigel. I'd discussed the whole "printers ink" thing with David a while back, but gave up trying to source any here in western Canada. His use of it on figures worked out so well. Would you have a brand and source for the ink you used here?
Cheers,
Gary

And in the US, please?

Thanks very much Paul, Joerg, Ben and Gary. The quality of CSM's 3D printing is up there with GasPatch IMO.
Joerg, we appear to be racing each other ;) I'm looking forward to your next updates as well :)

I'm fortunate that David displays with the Great War SIG quite often so I have learned so much from him. I noticed that some of his engine details really stood out and he explained that he used printer's inks for this (and also that he uses them in a similar way on figures). A great tip.
I source mine from El Greco Miniatures in the UK here: https://www.elgrecominiatures.co.uk/collections/printers-inks (https://www.elgrecominiatures.co.uk/collections/printers-inks) . Gene, I'm afraid I don't know of any sources in the US.

Wow! Lovely! Looking forward to more!

Cranfield printer ink is available in the USA. Here is a link. https://www.dickblick.com/products/cranfield-traditional-relief-ink/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fsearchword%3Dcranfield%20trsditional%20relief%20ink%20copper You can buy a set of copper, gold, and silver or purchase separately. The colors are listed alphabetically. The traditional printer ink is oil based. They are manufactured in the UK.

That is another very nice engine! You folks set the bar very high! :)
-
Thanks very much Monty, Dan and Andreas. More updates soon - I've been away this weekend but my oils were drying anyway.

Thanks Nigel - just placed an order with El Greco as they do ship to Canada. Cheers!

That's one beautiful motor, NigelR. Thanks for the tip on the printer's inks! I'll definitely be watching this one.
-
That Motor is Gorgeous! Honestly, I am a bit intimidated by the 3D printed version you have done so Magnificently ::)

Mr slow builder here, I finally have some progress to report. Even though I am doing this as a "quick" build, I spend far too much time faffing around with small details.... However, I have the interior subassemblies together and am ready to progress with assembling the whole tub.
Here's where I am so far:

The seat back is the 3D printed optional extra. And very nice it is too.
-
Very nice interior, i especially like the sear belts.
Andreas
-
I agree with Andreas, the work done so far is great, but the belts look as real leather!
-
Lovely work Nigel! I am also impressed by the leather of the Seatbelt. That being said the ply finish isn't to be sneezed at either! The implied pattern is perfect 8)

There you go, Nigel, things are moving forward. The cockpit looks very nice. You've done a great job with the leather straps.
Greetings

One thing that I really like about Great War era aircraft is all of the different textures and colors created by wood, fabric, leather, and various metals and you're doing a great job of bringing all of those elements together, NigelR. Your wood tone looks marvelous, especially where there are subtle contrasts in color and grain between the individual pieces.
-
Thanks very much everyone, glad you like the leather work. That's the kind of thing I enjoy doing but spend too much time on (as it will hardly e seen when the cockpit is closed up!). But my obsessive nature takes over, it's all part of the fun. And I agree with Vickers, I really like the combination of materials in these old birds.
I got the cockpit closed up quite quickly, I thought it might require a bit of fettling but everything fell into place at the first attempt. Really high quality engineering on this kit.

Looking fantastic Nigel! It seems everyone is praising the fit of the components. That is very encouraging news!

I think this kit is a step up from the Nie 17. That was really good, but for me it did require quite a lot of fettling to get the cockpit tub and side panels to all fit together snugly. This is almost perfect all round. I have just had to fettle the lower front area of the LH fuselage panel to get a really good fit. Everything else just fell together.

One place I see that is an improvement, at least for Me, is the induction pipe. On the 17 I found it extremely difficult to line up the multiple parts and have them fit the openings in the side panels. Doing it in a single piece looks far easier!

Yes, this is a big improvement. I too had the same issues on the 17, the fit of the side panels over the pipes on the 11 is perfect (at least on the early version....).

Beautiful interior on this Nieuport, Nigel.
The engine looks fantastic - great work.

Just to prove I am making progress on this build, here's a quick photo showing where I am up to:
All the subassemblies and details are painted, the main fuselage parts are together and I'm ready to start the main paint job. I'm currently experimenting with different CDL shades and am also practising some subtle rib treatments.
I recently bought "Nieuports in RNAS, RFC and RAF Service" published by the Great War Aviation Society and this has a lot of good reference photos of Nie 11s which are helpful for both the CDL finish and overall weathering. These photos confirm to me that the finish was not transparent.
-
Looking good Nigel, can't wait to see the main colour on it :)
-
Looking good, NigelR! Despite your declarations about being a slow builder, you seem to have ordered up full power on this Bebe journey of yours. I'm really glad that you, Borsos, and a few others hit the ground running with this great looking kit as I intend to get started on mine this spring and am paying close attention to the pathfinders' experiences with it.
-
Outstanding progress! I am really happy that you guys are making such great progress. The sooner you finish the sooner I can start My Meager efforts 8)

Just a quick update here. After spending many hours trying to mask the rib tapes (and making several cockups along the way), I have the main components decalled and varnished:

Weathering starts tomorrow........

Ooooh shiny 8)
Ready for the weekend?

Great update, Nigel ! I like the colours and the rib tapes are very precise (much better than I did). I'm already looking forward to your next update

Not for much longer..... ;)
Ready for the weekend?
Hopefully. It's going to be tight though......

Thanks Joerg, the rib tapes were a nightmare, many hours of masking and I still managed to get some overspray in a couple of places. The stuff you sent me helped in doing the top wing, for the bottom wings I just painted the curved sections by hand.
-
Superb work Nigel. Your rib taping patience has paid off!
-
Very nice finish overall. I am keen on seeing all the parts together.
-
Very nice, NigelR. I like your interpretation of the exterior colors. Well done!
-
That's looking really superb Nigel.
Alan.
-
Well, this is another masterpiece Nigel!
-
Superb work as usual, Nigel

Thanks very much everyone, much appreciated. I am rushing to get this finished for a show at the weekend, so probably won't have time to post any more in progress shots. Hopefully some completed shots on Friday.....
-
That's really taking shape nicely, Nigel.
I am rushing to get this finished for a show at the weekend
You lucky people in the UK always have a show to go to it seems! Where is this one??

The advantage of being a small country! I have 12 shows on my calendar so far this year, plus I am also going to the World Model Expo in Paris in July.
Even better, the show this weekend is in the Tank Museum at Bovington and the Great War SIG stand is located in the hall that has Little Willie, a Mark II, an FT17 and a Whippet. Great fun!

I would like to say that I am not envious, but this would be a lie.

Enjoying catching up on your build. Its turning out beautifully!

Lovely build and first one I have seen in Storks Markings! My scheme of choice when I do mine. Your build is outstanding!
