As I've finished the Pfalz DIIIa, there's still time for me to squeeze in another build in memoriam of Dave. This time it will be a WNW Fokker EIV, built OOB as 638/15. The onbly additions will be the excellent Aviattic EIV "feldgrau" decals, designed by our very own Dutch (great job!). I'll also be using some GasPatch turnbuckles.
Here's the box shot proving that I haven't started the kit yet. Hopefully this one will be quite quick.......

Nice! 8)

Ah, the E-4: I like this one a lot! Looking forward to your build, Nigel!
-
excellent Nigel, I am really looking forward to this one!

Really looking forward to this, Nigel, it's a beautiful kit. Which set of decals are you going with, the mixed, or all Feldgrau?

Errr feldgrau, like I said in my post......... ;) :)
-
Very excited to follow along on this one ;D

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa... guess in my enthusiasm I missed that part.
Either that, or it might have been that second gin & French after shutting down the assembly line for the evening. :P

Well, we have an engine. That's a start. More next week..........

A very nice engine it is!

A wonderful start Nigel! That engine certainly looks the part!
Looking forward to seeing more!

Good start! I suppose it's a starter engine only?! ;D

Looks great so far, Nigel, hope my U.III comes out half as nice!

This is what a week's work looks like:
I can't believe it's taken me so long to paint and decal so many tiny little bits and produce so little! But I guess it's all part of the fun........ ;D
BTW the rigging wires from the rudder bar and control column are loose because I had glued these all in place but then I realised I needed to fit the seat first because they pass through the seat frame. DOH! So they have been cut loose until after the seat has been fitted.
-
A little more progress today:
I added some plasticard strips to "pack" the gap behind the seats above the wing slot locations. This will hopefully prevent wing droop (thanks to Przemol for the idea!)
-
Looking good Nigel (and glad to hear that you occasionally have a 'Doh' moment too) ;)
P
-
Excellent looking Pit Nigel! I have made very similar rigging decisions in the past. (Had to re-do them same as you ::)

Lovely looking interior! Well worth a weeks efforts.

-
You've done a good job on the interior Nigel.
Alan.
-
Impressive!

Nice start
Sandy
-
Fantastic interior! And I hope my idea will work in your case, too.
-
Thanks very much everyone, I'm glad you think the effort was worth it.
And I hope my idea will work in your case, too.
It seems to be Przem. I have now closed up the fuselage and I did a test fit of one of the wings and it seemed to be perfectly straight. That was a really good idea, a nice simple fix.
-
Looking very nice!
Cheers
Matt

Fantastic work, Nigel. Taking notes here and looking forward to more updates. Just started a WnW E.1 myself.

Thanks Gary, we are in danger of creating an infinite note taking cycle because I am using your EIV and Immelman EII builds as my references........ Plus Przemol's EI build as well, that packing trick really seems to do the job, I test fitted both wings and it definitely helps minimise droop.
-
Superb work on that interior Nigel, some real first class model building and along with the others in progress here I'm getting an urge to start my trio soon. Keep those wonderful updates coming!
Cheers,
Lance
-
Lovely, clean work, Nigel, I'm taking notes too...
But I think instead of a note-taking loop we may be in danger of outright quantum entanglement here, where something you do on your build simultaneously gets incorporated into mine, and Gary's, and Allan's, and my son Curt's, and back and forth across the breadth of the multiverse...
Dutch
PS - At least you've managed to keep Schrödinger's nose out of this build, though; everything in that gorgeous cockpit will actually be visible once you button her up.
-
Thanks Lance and Dutch, much appreciated.

I can see the movie title now..... "Every Build Everywhere All At Once" :)

Too cultured for your own good Nigel ;D

I've been away for a few days but am now back to the bench and have made a bit of slow progress.
We have a propellor:
We have a closed up fuselage with a lot of gap filling:
And here's a quick shot of the wings dry fitted, showing so far only a tiny bit of droop on the right wing:
Hopefully I will be able to eliminate that when the wing is fixed in place.
Now on to lots of tedious prep work before painting, weathering, decalling and assembly.

Not going to be ready for the weekend then? ;D
(Lovely work so far Nigel) 8)

Not going to be ready for the weekend then? ;D
You cheeky monkey! :D I was hoping to have it done for the Gloucester show on the 22nd but that won't happen either. I need to speed up!

Lovely propellor.

Lovely propellor.
Sandy
Agree! Oils, pencils, decals, magic?!
Thanks Sandy and Fredrik. It's a combined pencils/oils approach. In the past I have painted the laminations in darker oils over a light acrylic base coat, let it all dry and then brushed a reddish brown oil coat over the whole thing and dragged brushes through it to create the grain. However, painting the laminations with oils is hard work and time consuming. So I used Bertl's technique of coloured pencils. I sprayed a light wood acrylic, coated it in flat varnish and drew the darker laminations with a coloured pencil. It takes a bit of practice and I couldn't get as good a finish as Bertl did, so I sprayed flat varnish over the pencil work and used oils over the top of the whole thing to create the grain effect. When dry, a coat of semi-gloss varnish ties it all together.
I was quite pleased with how it turned out. It's definitely easier for me using pencils to draw the laminations rather than trying to paint them on.

Coming along beautifully, love the prop. Oddly, what impresses me most, though, is what a neat job of work that face-plate is... did you freehand it, or use a mask of some sort? I can never seem to get that outer edge that clean.

Thanks Dutch. It's freehand. The trick is to not try to paint the faceplate right down to the wood of the prop. Instead I use a dark pinwash to fill in the gap around the edge of the faceplate where it meets the wood.
-
Thanks, Nigel, I'll give it a whirl. I've got three or four "practice props" for the E.I grained and set aside, so I won't lack for victims...

Beautifully done prop and engine! Looks good with the wings test fitted!

I have been doing quite a lot on this build although I haven't posted any updates. I have a box full of various painted sub-assemblies which I can't be bothered to photograph, I've now moved on to the main parts. After a long time taken to eliminate the seam on the fuselage join, I have undercoated the main parts and am doing some pre-weathering before applying the Aviattic decals.
I don't like to over-weather my WWI aircraft but the Eindecker is an exception. They were notorious for getting soaked in castor oil, so I've been experimenting with pre-weathering to get the look of the oil soaking through the fabric. I've tried various concoctions for this, and my favourite is Tamiya brown panel liner. Here's the undercoated fuselage with the first coat of weathering applied:
The panel liner dries with a nice stained effect, especially around the edges. However, one coat is too transparent, so I applied another coat to really darken the staining. I also applied this to the wings, all based on photos of the original machine:
It's now nice and dark so the next step is to gloss everything and apply the decals. Watch this space......
-
Very nice young man. Presumably the panel liner is water based so it dries quicker than oils? Certainly looks the part ;D
Paul

Thanks, hopefully the effect will look good through the fabric decal.
The panel liner is enamel based, so dries quick and is fairly hard wearing.
-
I'm making progress here, but this one is fighting me a bit, mainly due to some sloppy workmanship on my part. But this one will be done before the end of the memorial build.
I have decalled all the parts with the Aviattic feldgrau linen set and have added the markings on top of those. All of the subassemblies are done, it's now down to the final weathering steps before assembly and rigging.
Here's where I am currently at (just the fuselage here but the wings and tail feathers look very similar....):
The decals have been applied over the initial weathering to show the oil seeping through the fabric. I will now be doing several layers of weathering over everything to represent additional staining and grime. This will be done in several layers with oil paints, so will likely take some time. I'll post more updates when I have them....
-
Excellent.
That was the look I've been trying to get. I used oils on my DVIII but the clear coats lightened it considerably.

I'm ordering some today. THANKS !!!
-
Looks great, NigelR. Your cockpit and motor look fantastic and I admire your courage in weathering and staining- this E.IV of yours is shaping up to look like the genuine article in service!
-
Thanks Allan and Vickers. There will indeed be a lot of weathering going on, this is just the start..... A lot of new techniques being tried in earnest for the first time, so fingers crossed :)
-
Amazing work on the E.IV - The colors and weathering is perfect to my eye! Certainly saving some of your ideas for a future build! Although I only have the E II in the stash ;)
-
Wow, that's a ballsy start to the oiling, Nigel. I salute your courage - and will follow avidly.
It certainly looks great so far.
Sandy
-
Very grungy work Nigel. Looks great!
-
Thanks very much Ben, Sandy and Tim. The ballsy and grungy approach continues, here's where we are as of today:
I've done two more layers of weathering on the fabric since the last update, today's task is to apply even more weathering on the fabric surfaces, then weathering the metal areas (which were much cleaner than the rest of the plane) and refine the weathering on the undercarriage. Then it's wings on and finish t he rest of the rigging.....
-

Excited - Moi? ;D
Looks great Nigel - Looking forward to seeing it at Yeovil
Paul

Looking excellent Nigel, you're almost there. I know you are using a decal but do "we" have an FS number for the Feldgrau? I have an Eduard 1/48 EIII calling me.
-
I like the contrast between the metal and heavily stained fabric, NigelR. Truly impressive work, too.
-
Love it - some of these eindeckers looked like they were saturated in castor oil and you?ve captured this heavy staining really wel. Super wor!
Cheers
Matt
-
Thanks Paul, Allan, Vickers and Matt, much appreciated. The wings were attached last night, here's my high tech wing jig in action:
The wings have set nice and straight thanks to Przem's suggestion to avoid "droop".
I know you are using a decal but do "we" have an FS number for the Feldgrau? I have an Eduard 1/48 EIII calling me.
Allan, afaik there are no original samples of this fabric, the feldgrau is an educated guess that cleverer people than me have come up with from studying original photos. So no FS number, go with what you fancy......
Love it - some of these eindeckers looked like they were saturated in castor oil and you?ve captured this heavy staining really well.
Thanks Matt, fortunately there are a couple of photos of the aircraft I am building so I have tried as much as possible to replicate the weathering from those photos. This one was pretty heavily stained in those photos.
-
Your Eindekker is really looking the part, NigelR, and now that the wings on I imagine that you'll make quick work of the rigging. Can't wait to see it cross the finish line!

Behold my dirty bottom!

;D Yep that's a dirty bottom all right - Great job Nigel

Remarkable detail for the underside of a plane not to mention the wires coming out the fuselage.
Alan.
-
Beautiful details and staining! Really very inspiring!
/Fredrik
-
Ssssspank me !! Looks great.
-
Phenomenal result. I take my hat off to your audacity in attacking a smooth clean finish with the castor oil brush. I think you'll need to do similarly for the pilot's face though!
Sandy
-
Looks better with every update, NigelR! Nice work.
-
Thanks everyone, the feedback is much appreciated. I spent yesterday dirtying the upper surfaces a bit more and adding the final details. Just got the upper wing rigging to do, so she will be done by the end of this week.
Remarkable detail for the underside of a plane not to mention the wires coming out the fuselage.
Thanks Alan. Of course I now realise it won't be seen because once the top rigging is on, it's virtually impossible to turn the thing over.....
Ssssspank me !! Looks great.
Come to my tent later. We'll see what we can do..... ;D

Given the amount of castor oil I think the pilot will be permanently in the toilet.......
-
Just wow! Looks perfect ;D
Also the way you made the metal swirls on the cowling - everything coming together beautifully ;D
-
Man alive!
We have some talented cookies in this forum and you, sir are right up there with 'em!
Well done.
BB :o
-
Thanks Ben and Bob. Bob, you are very kind, it's thanks to the many talented cookies on here that I have learned new techniques and got ideas on how to improve my modelling.
And I have now finished this one. I actually found this to be quite a challenging build, the fit of the cowling, engine and cheek pieces was quite bad and needed a lot of fettling but I'm glad the deadline of the memorial build made me persevere and get this done. My dirty bottom has been joined by a dirty top:

A real Bobby-Dazzler, Nigel - and so speedily built.
Lots of superb detail work as well as the dirty protest!
Show stopper.

Fantastic end result! The oil seeping through the fabric looks very convincing.

Concur - terrific!

Stunning build and a fine tribute to our friend.

Wow, NigelR! Your Eindekker crossed the finish line in splendid fashion. What a marvelous model you've delivered with this one. All you need now is for Rick Moranis to shrink you down to 1/32nd so that you can hop in and fly that thang. Bravo!
-
Wonderful build! Turned out amazing ;D
-
Thanks very much everyone, I really appreciate the kind words. The feedback and encouragement is part of what makes this forum such a friendly place and that in itself is a tribute to both Dave and Des. Blue skies to both of them......

No thanks, I'd get far too dirty! ;D
-
Great results, a spectacular model all around.
PS. I envy you the skill to produce so realistic castor oil soaking... ;)
-
Nothing more to add Nigel - great all round 8)

Great job Nigel - you really captured the look of oil soaking through the linen.
Cheers
Matt

Very nice filthy Fokker!
-
Thanks very much Przem, Paul, Matt and Borsos, much appreciated!
PS. I envy you the skill to produce so realistic castor oil soaking... ;)
Thanks very much. The key to success here is using the Tamiya Brown panel liner under the Aviattic decals to make the staining patterns and then MIG Starship Filth oilbrusher on top of the decals to darken the basic patterns and create the "soaking through" effect.
-
Lovely job Nigel, the staining really makes it.
-
Beautiful work Nigel, you really captured that used look!
Apologies if I missed it, but can you step me through how you achieved the turned metal look on the cowling / metal panels? It looks lovely. That is one effect I have never really tackled and I would love to learn from your approach.
Thanks!
Brad
-
Probably the dirtiest airplane I have ever seen, and I mean that in a nice way. Admirable weathering job. It's most probably how they really were on the field.
Alan.
-
Beautiful finish Nigel, and absolutely great job on the weathering. I'll be consulting this thread when I get to mine!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks very much Allan, Brad, Alan and Lance, much appreciated.
Apologies if I missed it, but can you step me through how you achieved the turned metal look on the cowling / metal panels? It looks lovely. That is one effect I have never really tackled and I would love to learn from your approach.
Brad, it's fairly straightforward. I used a darker aluminium colour as the base colour and a lighter colour for the swirling effect. In this case I used Vallejo Metal Color dark aluminium lightened a little with "plain" aluminium (about 4 parts dark to 1 part "normal"). I then experimented with different "light" colours for the machining effect (various aluminiums, silvers and chromes) and my favourite was Vallejo Model Air silver RLM01. I then experimented with different approaches to applying the swirls, all types/sizes of brushes along with various dipping pens. I decided on using a size 1 kolinsky sable brush as this seemed the best combination of controllability and consistency. Lots of looking at pictures of the effect and lots if practice on scrap plastic to get a consistent approach, and then away I went.
Once this was done and the decals were applied, I sprayed the whole fuselage in semi-gloss varnish, did the weathering on the fabric areas and then masked and sprayed the fabric areas with matt varnish so that the metal areas appear shinier. I was surprised to see from original photos that the metal areas did not get that dirty compared to the rest of the aircraft (presumably because these could be wiped clean).
I don't know if that sounds "straightofward" but I hope it helps..... ;) :)
-
Hi Nigel, just catching up with weeks of missed of forum posts, I've been pretty much out of action due to some health stuff.
Absolutely stunning work, I think after seeing this mine is going back in the box for a while!
All best,
Dutch
Oh, and BTW, how did the decals fit...?
-
Thanks Dutch! Sorry to hear you've had health issues, hope things are improving for you now.
Oh, and BTW, how did the decals fit...?
The fit of all the panels to the parts was excellent. Only a couple of minor niggles. The underside leather patch doesn't line up with the actual exit holes on the underside but that really is a minor issue - bit of paint fixed that. I punched out the clear holes for the rigging fixings in the wings which in retrospect was a mistake, because these didn't quite line up. I think because I punched holes in the decals these caused a bit of stretch in the decals. My advice is not to punch these holes out before applying the decals.
-
Hope you had enough brandy while working with all that castor oil! ;D
Excellent wheathering, highly regarded.
Joachim
-
Thanks very much Joachim! Fortunately the castor oil didn't affect me too much...... ;D
