I cannot remember when last time I did something like this - start with a kit on the very day I got it in my hands. But this newest release from Lukgraph deserves every madness possible. Even postponing the build of CSM Caudron.
So here it is on my bench. The kit offers two decals options for L127 and L135 and the Hiero engine. However I do not like building the kit options. Thus, and also seeing the info from Windsock Datafile that L127 had the Rapp engine and learning that L135 was from the same UFAG production batch according to Keimel monograph, I decided to build L75 (it will be an easy combination of numerals available in the kit) which apparently had indeed the Hiero engine.
The work started with the 3D printed cockpit elements which are now cut from their printing trees and the surfaces cleaned from the printing layers.
Also the hull halves had the mating surfaces cleaned and small moulding faults at the cockpit headrest zone filled in preparation for final shaping and sanding. Let the fun begin!

I can understand why you put the Caudron temporerorly on hold. I've pictures of this Lukgraph kit and it looks like a great kit.
I'm in the front row following this build.
Willem

How exciting, a brand new kit in expert hands. I am looking forward to seeing this!
Richie
-
I will definitely follow this build, Przemo! Regards, Marc.
-
Engage!! Looking forward to this.
Steve
-
Although the CSM Caudron doesn‘t deserve to be pushed aside :'( I am keen on seeing you working on this one, too!
Andreas
-
I too am looking forward to seeing this build and I don't mind the Cauldron being put aside. I am sure you will not forget about it.
Alan.
-
I am always interested in flying boats - especially when the model is eing built by a master modeller. I will certainly be following this one.
Stephen.

Thank you for looking in and leaving kind comments.
After a busy weekend the cockpit is basically ready for closing.

That looks great. Tricky seam work coming up!
Steve

This is looking spectacular already Prezmo!
Willem
-
While the CA glue in the hull seam is setting I have cutthe elements of the engine assembly. The engine has the intake manifolds and the water tank separate (finally!) I also decided and managed to carefully separate the carbs assembly and the water pump - all for more ease at cleaning the omnipresent 3Dprinting layers and subsequent airbrushing. Now the sanding paper will be extensively used.

I'm sorry but it is due to me living in the vicinity of the manufacturer. A few other modellers from Poland got their copies already, too.

That's awesome! Congrats and thank you for giving us all a fantastic teaser. Regards, Pete

The hull seam is during the second filling and sanding session. Still some work with the sand paper to be done.

Great update!
Steve
-
Pure eye candy 🍭! That is looking so nice!
-
Thanks, Steve and Tim.
That new Lukgraph's idea for the 3Dprinted struts, where you make your own inserts from the provided copper wire is very promising.
With some patience and with holes drilled in the marked spots it even allows for some dry fitting!
-
Super update. I do like the idea of copper wire inserts in the struts - I have to do that on my larger scale models.
Stephen.

Weekend with riddles solving. First one was about the rigging of the engine support. Quite a number of lines there but I managed to make it out and drill the holes for the eyelets. Not much to show here. And I still have to decide if I use the fishing line or Uschi thread there.
Secondly, the layout of the struts supporting the stabilizer. If you try this model take care, there is a mistake in the kit instruction, the lengths for green 1 and 2 are swapped.
I did some measurements and calculations and confirmed that these 8 struts indeed come in two lengths of 27 and 35mm.
Then I added the wire inserts and drilled the holes in the stabiliser and the hull bracings to accept them.
Also, I decided to reinforce the future joint between these bracings and the hull surface using additional wire inserts.

Steve
Taken the short length of the inserts, their 0.5 or 0.8mm dia and the type of loading they are going to bear I am quite positive about it. 8)
And some more drilling and wires. The empennage is all reinforced and can be successfully assembled without any glue.

I am stunned to see so many progress in so little time Prezmo.
Very neat work on the tail with the reinforcements.
Willem
-
That’s really impressive how fast you are building this one. And how great it looks!
Andreas
-
Thanks, gentlemen.
Some more work, though not so quick as over the weekend.
Replacements for flattish PE control horns made from scratch.
And the dry fit of lower wings. For a moment the holes in the wings for the steel wire are drilled tightly (1.2mm) and not accurately. I will redrill them later with a larger dia drillbit (1.3mm) to have a margin of movement to fit them to the planned cardboard rig in order to control the dihedral and sweepback angles. The photo is just a teaser ;)

Today it was all about struts. Now all are fitted with wire inserts and all but last three polished to remove the printing traces.

More preparations.
Trolley and trestles bits cut from the trees awaiting cleaning. Upper wings bits cleaned and armed in wire sections for better strength. And yes, this beast will be HUGE.

It's good to see how thoroughly you prepare every part before building. I need to follow this example!
The fuselage looks really beautiful.
Richie

I am really curious how you‘ll stack up all those hundreds of struts on to the lower wing!
Andreas
-

Andreas
It will be a challenge. But the plan is to build the centre tower with the engine first. Then put the upper wing on, and add the outer interplane struts. When it sets well - add the inner interplane ones and rigging. The supports of cantilevers at the end. Wish me luck ;)
-
Some more fitting, including the cardboard rig. Also all the holes for rigging stations have been drilled. Time to start the paintjob.

Lower wings got their pattern of spars and ribs on the underside and then got finally glued to the hull using the rig.

This is looking so nice! I’m curious to see how you will paint the wooden hull under the wing bracing.
-
Przemo, my wife is very angry at you. You make me spend money on my first airplane model without wheels.
Until now I actually passed all float planes or flying boats, but that one and like you build it start to change my mind …
Andreas
-
Great work there, Prez -
Really taking shape now
Regards
Dave

Thank you, gentlemen.
Przemo, my wife is very angry at you. You make me spend money on my first airplane model without wheels.
Until now I actually passed all float planes or flying boats, but that one and like you build it start to change my mind …
Andreas
Does it mean that your wife supports your building the land planes only? ;)
Well, try to convince her that the flying boats are beautiful - especially those from Adria war theatre which had so fancy colour schemes, both Italian and A-H ones.
She may change her mind ;D
-
This is looking so nice! I’m curious to see how you will paint the wooden hull under the wing bracing.
I was thinking of the sequence here, too. But seeing the sufficient gap below the wing spars I concluded that it will be possible to airbrush and paint below them. We will see soon ;)
Eyelets, eyelets. 128 of them mounted and tested for pull off! Examples on the stabiliser, elevator and cabane struts below.
The ribs pattern under the upper wings added too, together with eyelets...
Further measurements revealed that the struts 7 and 8 are too short. Replacements made from plastic profiles and wire.
And the scratched control horns for the ailerons.
Now to prepare the turnbuckles, 58 large ones from 32nd scale Gaspatch, 48 small ones from 48th scale Gaspatch and 24 micro ones for the engine support - I will scratch them from 2mm sections of tube and eyelets.
The colouring is delayed, I know...
-
Fascinating and mad at the same time - so many eyelets! Great progress Prze, and thank you for sharing it.
-
“I was thinking of the sequence here, too. But seeing the sufficient gap below the wing spars I concluded that it will be possible to airbrush and paint below them. We will see soon ;)”
Ah! The advantage of working in large scale! I so often forget not everyone builds in 1/72.
The PE rib effects are incredible! Thanks for sharing.
-
The turnbuckles prepared, 60 small ones, 58 large ones and 24 small ones with Uschi lines for the control surfaces.

And the colouring started. The linen undersides with pre and postshading to show the traces of the inner structure... Also the wood got the background colour.

Andreas
Hi, these decals are very fine to work with, conforming nicely around the surface details. Silvering minimal, disappeared after some use of MicroSol. One just needs to cut them carefully as they are printed on the decal paper fully covered with the carrier foil.
-
Beautiful work. This is such an attractive aircraft and you are really bringing out the best qualities.
-
Great work. Are those house brand decals or does someone else do them for Lukgraph?
Steve
-
Thanks.

Steve
Łukasz started making his own decals recently, not only for the kitsets but also losenge, linen, wood, etc.
-
Ok! Thanks for the update.
Steve
-
Really beautiful work, it's going to be a real stunner.
Richie
-
Looks amazing Prze, as always.
I’d love to try the their Albatros C.III.
Guy
-
Beautiful workmanship!
-
Thank you.
And among the preparations to Easter celebrations I managed to paint the wood.

-
Wow!! That's a major step. It all looks amazing. Oils over acrylics?
Steve
-
Thanks, Steve.
But it is not oils, I use water paints to paint the wood grain instead, and seal them with acrylic transparent orange/brown
-
Hammering the nails...

-
Wow, so much attention to detail. The 'nails' add so much to model. I love your watercolour wood effect too. Yet another technique noted down to experiment with.
Richie
-
Very nice look! The nails really add another layers of details.
/Fredrik
-
Just catching up on this one Prze, and looks like you’re doing an amazing job (as always!) on the details and paintwork. I have to agree when you said you started on the project as soon as you got it, and have felt the same kind of enthusiasm for a project right from day 1. And your work shows great enthusiasm ;)
Cheers,
Gary
-
Just catching up too Prze,
Beautiful work! I may have missed it, but do you make your own eyelets?
Guy
-
Thank you for your kind comments!
Guy, I use eyelets from Bob's Buckles where I may. However, I make my own ones for the hinged mount points of the Gaspatch turnbuckles.
-
Nailed it ::) ! That is a very subtle but effective addition to the build.
Steve
-
Beautiful wood effect. Interesting technique using acrylic paint for the wood texture. I have not been able to do that. Very realistic nail work as well.
-
One step forward, two steps back. I was naive to think that the thin carrier film of nail heads would disappear under the coat of varnish. It did not... >:(
(https://i.ibb.co/2vwS4jV/20230413-145716.jpg)
It was not long before I made the decision to scrape it all (except the part under the wing spars where I did not place the nails decals)...

... and repaint...

... and for the nail heads I will be using the HGW decals with peelable transfer film. They have just arrived. :)
-
Uh oh - but a quick repair!!!
Steve
-
Ouch! But it'll be worth it, so the right choice I believe!
/Fredrik
-
Excellent recovery from the decal film edge. I’m sure you will have better outcomes with the new product.
-
I can only imagine the disappointment you felt with the carrier film but bravo for carrying out the fix and powering through - I have little doubt the end result will be well worth the extra effort.
-
I read in WDF 99 that every Lohner seems to have had at least one complete overhaul in their service career.
So in this way you just did what is historicaly correct.
Great rescue!
Andreas
-
Great save! That must have been so frustrating but the situation has been recovered beautifully.
Richie
-
Nails application. Slowly but always forward ;)

The nails look superb, you must be much happier with it now.
Richie
-
Thanks, Zac and Richie. And yes, I am happier now. Especially that I finished nailing. And added the hull markings. Now to add all those PE fittings.

-
Good recovery -not meant negatively, but the fuselage looks like a flying wooden shoe! (clog) ;D Albeit a gorgeous one :)
-
Thanks.
So, working on on the Holzschuh ;)
The floats mounted and rigged, the fuselage fittings on place.

Andreas

I just went through your entire build to date. Brilliant work as always Przemo! The details and especially the painting are striking! All of the drilling and pinning tend to show Me that this kit is way above My Skill Level. You are indeed a Master!!

Thank you!
After a short absence due to the long Polish weekend I am back to modeling.

Beautiful work, Prz, the woodwork glows and the detail work is superb.

I am glad you like my work. So here is more. The propeller complete with boss plates recovered from spares. The engine support complete with its 22 cables and side fittings from the kit PE fret. And finally dry fit together. Now for some dirt and to mount it on the hull. And yes, there will be even more lines with turnbuckles...

The engine tower finished, the engine just laid dry to give the photos more flavour.
Honestly, this model costs me a lot. But today ended with a huge success. What I feared most in this build is now done - the horizontal stabiliser rests now safely on its 8 struts!!! But do not ask me how it was done - probably the most stressing modelling bit in my life...
Well, the bird starts taking shape!

Thanks for kind words, gentlemen
More work on the tail feathers. Vertical stabilizer with its rigging done. Elevator and rudder fitted with control horns just dry fit for more flavour. I will do the control lines from Uschi elastic not to strain the assembly excessively.

Your progress on the Lohner looks as intimidating as impressive. I never really felt frightened by the complexity of a kit (before building it, I mean), but that’s really tough what you do here. How do you align the struts? Auxiliary structure made of cardboard? By eye?
Regards,
Andreas

Thank you.

Regards,

Andreas, I am scared of this kit, too. For the time being I used a cardboard jig for lower wings alignment. And I will also use it when attaching the top wing to stabilize the wing cellule.
The tail assembly was a nightmare and I did it "by eye", a bit of trial and error which was surprisingly successful in the first attempt. ???
The lower part of the engine support was very stable with its N struts which joined both the engine bearers and the horizontal truss under them. The upper N struts are now attached too, but here my eyes tell me they are not perfectly symmetric in the front view, they will need to be corrected by rigging.
And I have still to decide if I attach the centre section itself and the outer wing panels later followed immediately by interplane struts. Or assemble the complete top wings set before attaching it.
The first option has a danger of not getting the correct sweep back, the second one can be difficult because of the large weight of the wings assembly. In any case, the interplane struts will be attached after the wings are aligned as this is imho the only way to ensure their proper inclination...
Well, it certainly is the most difficult model in my life...
-
This build just keeps on astonishing me! When you mount the top wing could you possibly show us how you go about it? I have a bit of a tough stage coming up on my project and am keen to see how you go about solving this riddle.
Richie
-
The first steps towards making it a biplane. The top wing assembled with required 10deg sweepback. The hull with lower wing back to the jig. And the first pair of rigging cables in the tower upper storey tightened and the symmetry restored. Also the throttle control linkage scratch built.

It is a great relief. The dryfitting of top wing showed that the interplane struts are OK in length, at least surely not too short. So now to install the last turnbuckles in the struts and to the final assembly.

Ooo Caudron G.3. I have it in my plan as well, but Nieuport gave me such a hard time that I have to put the CSM company on hold for a while. So I will follow the end of building a flying boat and the continuation of new projects.

Going on...
After mounting the midspan turnbuckles on the struts I gathered my courage and attached the upper wing to the tower. And then inserted the front 4 interplane struts
(https://i.ibb.co/4drWYKS/20230522-215307.jpg)
After couple of minutes for the CA glue to set I started with the rear struts. They turned out to be about 1mm too short. I added the additional pieces of wire and did the left side pair. The right side later when I cool down... There is also a slight distortion in the plan view but this should be an easy correction with the rigging stagger lines.

Looks great and hopefully it will be as easy of a correction as you envision !
RAGIII
-
Awesome! I can't see any problem with the wing alignment in the photos but I am sure your great skills will correct anything you have noticed.
Richie
-
Thanks Rick and Richie.
There was indeed a distortion in plan view but as I expected a careful tensioning of stagger lines remedied it, so I can declare that now geometry of the wing cellule is sufficiently close to symmetry 😉
You can also see that the front supports of cantilevers are missing. Yesterday I found them to be a tad too long, so I decided to rig the wings first and then I will check again and adjust their length if necessary.
And yes, I am extremely happy to have this long and difficult project nearing the successful end.

Lance, your words are the highest recognition I might get, too high. It is my honour to be accepted here among so many great modelers of WW1 aircraft.
Well, a brief report from today, the main rigging finishedand ailerons attached, though not yet fully connected. Unfortunately I will have to make a 2 days pause, though I feel itching in my mind and fingers knowing that the end is just one good evening away...

Dear Zac,
I surely meant no offence by placing Fokker D.VII box as a base and my comment was stiggered by someone asking me, what I will build next.
Of course, I plan to build this Fokker D.VII but there is a long queue... And when I get to this kit it will surely end in Polish livery. BTW I already have the Berthold's kite in my collection, build from Roden 72nd scale kit many moons ago.
