Next on the bench...
(https://i.postimg.cc/0Nq3Dgs5/Albatros-D-III-001.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Julius Buckler's Albatros D.III. "Mops".
Not new to me...I (tried to) build the same kit in 2011, but I messed up the rigging and the kit ended in the bin.
Reference material:
Malaula, Julius Buckler.
Albatros Aces of World War I, Greg VanWyngarden
Aces of Jagdstaffel 17, Greg VanWyngarden
Albatros D.III/D.V Aces' fighter, Kagero
I'll start when I finish the Roland C.IIa, so...more soon.
Robin :)

Albi-weeks ;) I'm in!
After your D.II follows a D.III (ok, in between a Fokker and a Roland - impressive speed), so you can notice the improvements between the types.

I'll try!
I can improve the woodgrain....less is more I guess. I'll also make sure the engine is dead on centre this time and I'll double check the ammo feed and Spandau placement.
This caused some problems with the D.II. Perhaps I cut off the control surfaces this time, but not sure about that yet.
Pretty much an OOB build.
Robin :)
-
Looking forward to another Great build!
RAGIII

Robin, of course you are getting better with every model and try to avoid mistakes.
But with improvements between the types I meant the technical aspects of the types.
I'm as an engineer find it very interesting to see the technical changes from the D.I -> D.II -> D.III -> D.V -> D.Va
Good solutions was kept, other things done better or easier to manufacture. Especially in the early times you can also see, how better ideas are "stolen" and implemented on the next type of another manufacturer (e.g. Morane-Saulnier, early Pfalz, Fokker monoplanes).
For me this is a very interesting part of modeling and so part of the research.
Cheers,
FRank

Indeed this is an essential topic in model building, how not to agree?
Will be an interesting build to follow.

Popcorn , check , pepsi , check ...comfortable chair with lots of fluffy pillows , check ...yup , I'm all set :)
Terri

Frank...I completely misread your remarks. Sorry. :-[
I can improve the woodgrain....less is more I guess.
While clearing my desk and tidying my room I noticed a piece of plywood with plausible aircraft quality grain, so I did a little test.
(https://i.postimg.cc/J79w5TJg/plywood-to-scale.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
There goes painting nice woodgrain out of the window. Indeed...less is more. :(
Recovering from this shock...I opened the box.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pXXjkZHf/Albatros-D-III-002.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
First impression....nice, but basic.
Good: Two different top wings (radiator position), an optional (no scheme for it though) OAW rudder, five schemes to choose from, hardly any flash and push marks.
Not so good: Very basic PE set (inspection hatches needed), struts too bulky, wheels too small, fixed control surfaces, insufficient lower wing connection.
Nitpicking: Albatros factory decals not mirrored, no cushion, no fuel tank.
Overall...Fine. :)
Here we go! More soon,
Robin
-
Your wood grain experiment is interesting! I have always been in the "Less is Best" school but must admit that a "Well Done" wood grain is Visually and Artistically pleasing. Looking forward to your build as always!
RAGIII
-
Interesting , looking forward on the future outcome .
I'm in the same boat with Rick , less is more .
Terri
-
Looking forward to another of your builds, Robin.
Regarding your woodgrain test, I didn't paint the woodgrain on the frame of the Tommy (1/32 scale) and I don't think I lost anything. I did put woodgrain on the IP and the footboards, just to make things more visually interesting, as Rick said.
-
I'm in for the build! Always so nicely presented and very fun! /Fredrik
-
Thanks guys. :)
A little bit of wood grain won't do any harm I guess. Without it probably won't even look like wood. I'll see what I can do.
No time to start in earnest before the new year. :-\
Robin
-
No time to start in earnest before the new year. :-\
Robin
.....but I do something each day. :)
One thing I learned from my previous 3 builds, it's not nice when you have to overcome fitting issues when most of the kit is ready.
Nicely painted and fragile little things stick out all over the place. Difficult to handle and (paint) damage becomes almost inevitable. :-\
A D.II done and a D.III isn't that different, so I know what can...and will cause problems.
So, I tackle these before anything else. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/kX5W0ZVc/Albatros-D-III-003.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/GhSvdQG1/Albatros-D-III-004.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/6pkRGpMj/Albatros-D-III-005.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The landing gear.
Hopelessly flimsy, no details whatsoever and getting it all aligned can cause a mental breakdown.
Done. :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/Xv95K6hV/Albatros-D-III-006.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/qvhyR3x6/Albatros-D-III-007.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Another one is the poor fit of the struts (to the fuselage). Also nice to solve this before paint.
I can now start with the interior.
More soon,
Robin :)
-
Always nice to see plastic being cut , nice start so far Robin .
Terri
-
excellent work on the gear and Cabane struts! The results will certainly add strength to the structure!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick!
Still somewhat paranoid about misaligning the engine and/or Spandaus...I check about all I can check.
Found (part of?) the problem!
The frame in between the magazines and (missing) fuel tank is too small.
When you glue it to one side...there will be a gap on the other side...and the magazines will be off centre.
Easy to overlook...easy to fix also. A 0,25mm thick strip of Evergreen wrapped around the frame and it will fit like a glove.
(https://i.postimg.cc/dtZL5Qy8/Albatros-D-III-008.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Furthermore...
Opened the frame, adjusted the floor board and pit upgrades.
The NZ D.II replica photo's from James Fahey (Jamo) and the Brad Cancian Roden 1/32 D.III photo's are very helpful.
Merry Christmas!
Robin
-
Great fix to the fit issue and nice job on removing the material from the former!
RAGIII
-
Thanks Rick. :)
Ready for paint now...
(https://i.postimg.cc/QM47DRts/Albatros-D-III-009.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Some extras, but most important...all the frames are now centered and "touch" both sides of the fuselage.
Endless dry fitting and many thin strips of Evergreen to get it all in line. Eduard...pffff. ::)
Okey...let's say the build starts...now. :)
Robin
-
Nice job on those details Robin 8)
Terri
-
Yes, nice details. At least you are moving forward as opposed to correcting kit issues.
-
Excellent detailing! It will pay off in the end!
RAGIII
-
Thanks milady, thanks guys.
Threw some paint on here and there...

Interior ready for oils now.
More soon,
Robin :)
-
WOW! Your interior is turning into one of the best I have seen in 1/48th scale!
RAGIII
-
Sweet ! :)
Terri
-
Thanks T. and Rick. :)
Almost finished the pit.
A couple of wires and the fuel tank to do before I can close the fuselage.

Really looks Terrific! Better than some 1/32nd Roden interiors I have seen!
RAGIII
-
I like the wood tones , nice job Robin ! :)
Terri
-
Sensational!
Frank
-
Very nice work thus far Robin, the interior is a real beauty. I have the book as well and really enjoyed it; Buckler was an interesting and accomplished man.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks all.
Done the remaining interior bits and bobs, so the last couple of photo's for posterity. ::)

And buttoned-up ...
(https://i.postimg.cc/sgqp2RnV/Albatros-D-III-015.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
More next year. ;D
Robin
-
In a word Brilliant!
RAGIII
-
Lovely work Robin.
-
I like it Robin , very nicely done ! No control cables in the pit ?
Terri
-
Thanks!
Terri, I did the (tail) wires from the control stick going underneath the seat.
Didn't do the rudder wires, even though I scratch build the pulleys for them.
The Eduard frames are not correct and got in the way. Noticed too late to fix it. Not a big deal in this scale.
One of the major problems with my previous builds, was the constant handling of the fuselage.
Was very difficult to avoid fingerprints and paint damage, so I made a jig/stand from copper wire.
(https://i.postimg.cc/rmxyDDkV/Albatros-D-III-016.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/bvKNYQ4V/Albatros-D-III-017.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I can now paint without touching the fuselage...and set it aside.
More soon,
Robin :)
-
Excellent work on the interior! That wire jig looks like a truly excellent solution to an age old problem. Bravo!
-
That wire holder for painting is ingenious! Well Done!
RAGIII
-
Great work! You've really managed to improve the kits (basic) details and it's looking good! That wire stand was clever - thanks for sharing that idea.
/Fredrik
-
Thanks guys,
Next step...
(https://i.postimg.cc/ZKRw0BB8/Albatros-D-III-018.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
..."basic paint"
I did the wood base with a sand colour, just a single base colour. No pre-shading, no panel line wash, or whatever.
With the wood grain minimal and lengthwise on all panels, it will be difficult to make it look nice.
There's a chance my effort to make it look realistic will backfire, but I like to give it a try. :-X
Fingers crossed...oils next.
More soon,
Robin :)
-
Looks like a great base for the wood! Remember that the great thing about the oils is you can remove most of the pigment but still leave a stained effect with some grain. I am sure your Albatros will look great!
RAGIII
-
Excellent progress, Robin.
Love the wire handling frame ;)

Thanks gents,
Yep...really happy with this stand-holder-jig-frame-thing. I now wonder why it took me 50+ years. :o
First oil results are in....
(https://i.postimg.cc/4dJXbpjd/Albatros-D-III-019.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Started to do a batch of 6 panels.
(https://i.postimg.cc/LsF95cTj/Albatros-D-III-020.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Ended up with 5. I removed too much from the 6th and couldn't fix it, so I cleaned it up.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pdQ2FsG4/Albatros-D-III-021.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
A close up.
Perhaps a bit boring, but this is about what I try to achieve now. Very little. ;D
Tomorrow another batch.
Robin :)
-
Robin,
I think you've got the wood effect just right.
Keep up the great work!
Kevin
-
Very promising Robin , thumbs up !
Terri
-
This is a wonderful Albatros all in all.
Andreas
-
Great progress!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Great detail work on the interior, Robin. The woodgrain will turn out nicely.
-
I think your efforts with the woodgrain are looking really good. One tricky aspect of woodgrain, I think, is that it shouldn't really be visible from a distance, yet not be completely monochrome and at the same time it should still be showing some graining as you look closer. Well done!
/Fredrik
-
Perfect for the scale...at least to My Eyes! I am loving this one!
RAGIII
-
Robin,
Thanks for sharing that super little wire holder gadget, I like that a lot and will add it to my bag of tricks! You are using the same technique for your wood grain one panel at a time, I used the same approach on a 1;32 Albatros recently and it worked out well, you just have to go slow .......
Very nicely done, this is looking like a superb model in the making.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Great updates, Robin - some handy tricks to learn. Your build is progressing nicely.
Cheers,
Gary
-
I did two more batches...
(https://i.postimg.cc/DwvXLm16/Albatros-D-III-022.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I think I can do the remaining panels tomorrow....probably 3 batches :)
When done I'll put it aside for 5 or 6 days before varnish and decals.
I varnished the D.II after two days without problems, but I won't push my luck...so I wait longer now.
This time I'll use to paint the wings an tail, finish painting the prop and make the Spandaus.
Already looking forward to my next build. The Mirage 1/48 Halberstadt CL.IV HFW.
A big thanks for all your kind remarks and...more soon.
Robin :)
-
Finished the plywood...
(https://i.postimg.cc/c4tmFd4w/Albatros-D-III-023.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Compared with my D.II...
(https://i.postimg.cc/TPkj4cTc/Albatros-D-II-004.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
A steep learning curve. :)
Put it aside. Wings now.
Robin

The wood work is Stunning! Again I will say perfect for the scale! Nice variations achieved !!
RAGIII

+1 on the wood. Subtle is King!
Well done!!

Like the others Robin , you nailed it ! The clear coating will bring it out and blend it all together beautifully , can't wait ;D
Terri

Thanks T., thanks guys. :)
Wings and other stuff.

(https://i.postimg.cc/jqnzJR8n/Albatros-D-III-025.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I must slow down now...5 days to go before I can varnish the fuselage. :-\
I can still paint the radiator, do most of the eyelets and finish the spandaus, but that's about it for now.
Robin :)
-
What a great and carefully made Albatros. It is going to be a beauty!
Andreas
-
Wow, what a progress!
The fuselage looks much better than your the previous Albatros.
And you use the drying time very clever for preparation of all that small parts, so I guess we will see a finish soon?
You promised already the next project (I fully understand - with that impressive speed a forecast is necessary), the Mirage Halberstadt is also waiting in my stash so I will watch very carefully.
You have a own, nice, refreshing style of modelling: You do not get frittered away, but concentrate on the important things, paint carefully and produce wonderful models!
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks Andreas and Frank,
I try to learn from what I see and read on this forum and also from my previous builds.
A little bit better each time...I hope...try to.
I think I found some sort of balance. Build nice models and actually finish them!
Too often I got bogged down trying to do things beyond my skill level.
I now try to keep the pace and nice is good enough for me now...at least I get things done that way. :)
Not really an update worth mentioning, but since I'm here, I might as well post a photo...
(https://i.postimg.cc/2SMMQX2T/Albatros-D-III-026.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
With the D.II and Roland, I wasn't overly happy with the gloss varnish. Too glossy and a top coat of semi gloss didn't really change that.
I now did semi-gloss, decals and another layer of semi. Still smooth enough for the decals to go on nicely, no silvering problems.
Aileron panel lines with oil. Radiator dull aluminium (Vallejo 77.717) on black. Tamiya black panel liner.
3 days until I can varnish the fuselage, so probably ready in a week.
Robin :)
-
The decals and fabric are one and the same. Looks excellent Robin!
von B :)
-
Excellent work on the wood, Robin. I believe it is an improvement over the previous build.
-
The update pics show great work, Robin. I particularly like to paintwork on the propeller - at that scale you've done an excellent job of curving the laminated lines perfectly.
Cheers,
Gary
-
Good build and nice details! Looking forward to varnish on those panels.
/Fredrik
-
Really nice work!
-
The wing looks superb!
RAGIII
-
Thumbs up Robin !
Terri
-
Thanks all. :)
I waited 5 days for the oils to cure...instead of the planned 6. Me bad. :-X

(https://i.postimg.cc/Dw47gw0R/Albatros-D-III-028.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/28KzhZk4/Albatros-D-III-029.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Landing gear not fixed in place yet.
Since I waited 2 days for the oils to dry on my D.II...and no problems whatsoever...I guess 5 is plenty.
These Ammo-Mig Oilbrushers are fantastic I think.
Also done all the eyelets, so I can start "pre-rigging", wings on and finish the rigging.
Oh...and a little weathering.
More soon,
Robin :)
-
Looking very nice Robin, and your wood effect and finish is spectacular!
Cheers,
Lance

The fact you ask...yay! They're decals. :)
The book cover base was an idea of my wife!
Not bad for someone who thinks my Rudolf Stark Fokker D.VII is a cool Philippe Starck design ;D
-
Very pleasing to the eyes , well done so far Robin 8)
Terri

Thanks T. :)
Wings are on and rigging done...only a few control surface wires left to do.
All went smooth...no problems encountered.
(https://i.postimg.cc/6qh0dJ4y/Albatros-D-III-032.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Still to do: radiator plumbing, windscreen, weathering and place landing gear and prop.
More soon,
