Title: Albatros W.4, Eduard 1/48
Post by: Bughunter on November 25, 2019, 05:54:36 AM
Albatros W.4, Eduard 1/48

My model number 5 of 2019 is finished, after a light weathering here are the final pictures.

This float plane is a Albatros W.4, as flown at Baltic sea at "Seeflugstation Windau".

The kit is a very fine Eduards Profipack with PE mask and decals, released 2003. I added a wooden screw, some brass parts, Gaspatch turnbuckles of different type and a Vector resin engine. Paint was done with paint by Alclad, MRP, Gunze and oils ands pastels for weathering.
The build was pure fun, with your great support!

WOW, and again WOW!! Frank you are a past-master when it comes to adding all of those extra details. I have to keep thinking that this is 1/48 scale not 1/24 (Well that is what you tell us!) I am lost for word when I try to appraise your models because words cannot express what I really think. Will viele sehr sehr wunderbar do? (many times, very wonderful)

Stephen.

Oh yes, I do like it! Very very much. These are the essence of early aviation and your superb model brings it so much to life.

Incredible Frank, I am completely in awe of your skills as demonstrated here. A great Build Log and in the end result a spectacular model of a true classic, it doesn't get any better! I have to mention the results you achieved on the "brass" sleeves on the prop tips; I've tried to use the paint solution and failed miserably at it, you "aced" it!
Congratulations, a true "top drawer" model!
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you very much Robin, Stephen, Bob, Dave, Steve, Albert, Juan, Terri, Manni, Fredrik, Giuseppe, Lance, Ken, Gary,Pedja, Chuck, Paul and Andreas!
Highly appreciated!

I have to keep thinking that this is 1/48 scale not 1/24 (Well that is what you tell us!)
Ah, that is a great idea! If my eyes one day are no more good enough for 1/48, I will use your trick 8)

But on top of that you have also taken us through the building process step by step, something I really, really like!
Oh yes, this build was a very interesting journey also for me :D

I have to mention the results you achieved on the "brass" sleeves on the prop tips; I've tried to use the paint solution and failed miserably at it, you "aced" it!
Thank you Lance! The main driver to go this way was the decal number. I thought, that also on real brass I have to use clear coat as base for the decal, so I used then a paint directly.

I am keen on seeing it in person.
I hope, that we can manage to see us in FFB next February!

This bird moved again into a project with huge effort, but since the finish I have not done anything ???
It will need a deep breath and I will continue with one of the shelf queens, or a new project, may be again a Albatros? ;) ;D

Cheers,
Frank

Hi Frank,
as I wrote in your W.I.P., this is a masterpiece, really. Something to learn to.
It seems ready to be take from a crane and to place in water, do you think to place it in a diorama?
Many congratulations,
Roberto

Thank you Roberto!

Would be a interesting task, to learn something new, but I don't think so, at least in near future.

The reason is my glass cabinet on a wall. It is big, still a lot of space, but not very deep (also to small for WNW).
The aluminium profiles carry LED strips and illuminate the models from below and above, so a base would create a lot of shadow.

Beautifully done display case Frank, and a magnificent collection of models! A real pleasure to see this, is it your own design and build or did you find it on the market somewhere?

Oh, no, I bought the cabinet. You don't have to be able to do everything and you can leave something to the experts 8). And working with safety glass is not that easy either.

The size is 1,20m width x 1m high, but only 25cm deep. The reason is a staircase to the attic:

Please note: on the previous picture it was new and no light installed. There were only lights from top or sides offered, so I made my own solution.
Small 5mm stripes with (higly correct color, CRI=85) LEDs in alu profiles:

Clamped with the 8mm glass shelves, wires inside the frame:

So finally my downscaled biplanes are nicely presented :) Please ignore the color of the picture, white balance of the camera was in trouble.

Enjoyed the W-4 (as well as all of your previous posts). Nice to see them all in one shot.

What is the source and model # of those light strips. The alum strips 5mm 90 degree Angle that you just cut and modify ?

Thanks Ed!

The slum strips are from a DIY store. I used L-profiles 10x15mm, because the thickness of the glass boards is 8mm. So inside of the L 13mm - 8mm means space for 5mm strips.

The strips I bought in 2014 here: https://www.led-konzept.de/
The exact type is no more available (much progress in LED technology since then), but comparable ones (they have some nice filtering mechanism):
https://www.led-konzept.de/einfarbige-LED-streifen

I selected 24V for less current/thinner wires,
4mm stripes (the alu on the front as small as possible),
I think I used warm-white. They offer now a colour fidelity (CRI- color rendering index (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_rendering_index)) up to 95.

That reduces the offer very much. My strips are 9,6W/m, now they are even brigther/more power. The alu-L provides cooling so the LED lifetime is improved.
I added a dimmable LED controller, so it runs typically not at full power.

Cheers,
Frank
