Ball's Nie.17 (N1579) A.213
« on: April 22, 2019, 06:28:52 AM »
I'd like to do my CSM Nieuport 17 Early as Ball's A.213 just to be different. In Osprey's No. 60 Sqn RFC/RAF color plates A.213 is depicted in French two-tone camouflage, along with the cone de penetration and plain cowl (no reinforcements) but with the solid upper wing.  I've also encountered a photo on the internet depicting Ball's "A.212" (apparently in cammo with smooth cowl and "cdp") with the clear center section in the CSM 32001 kit.  Would French serial N1579 be too late in the series to have the clear center panel? Can anyone out there provide a definitive answer?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Regards, Rob

I can't answer all of your questions but perhaps this will help a little. As for serial numbers as I discovered looking at the Lafayette birds they seem to have no real cut off point regarding the clear panel. As you might remember N1977 and 1844 both have the clear panel, where N1950 does not. Going through the Data File Special Nieuport Fighters Vol. 1 I saw a photo of A200 listed as having been flown,( At Least once), by Ball. It has the clear panels. Curiously A212 is listed in this volume as being a Nieuport 16. Personally I think it is a safe bet that A213 most likely would have had the clear panels but will continue to look around for more info.

This is a rough photo ( Better Quality in the Datafile Special) of what Ray identifies as A200. I have had no luck so far with A213.

As always I will Happily remove the photo if it violates copyright!

Thanks RAGS!  That is the photo I found labeled "A.212" Is it just me, or do the cowl & "cdp" appear to be the same color (or at least same "grey shade") as the outer ring in the fuselage roundel? The both appear to be in the same plane of illumination. I have Nieuport Fighters Vol. 1 but clean forgot to check there. . .

While researching I discovered profile 13 in Osprey's 33 Nieuport Aces shows Dorme's N1428 with the enlarged wind screen. In all the times I've looked through the book, I'd never noticed that detail before.

I also noticed the windscreen in that profile in the last Month or so. Also on the Guynemer profile. As for A213 perhaps check with Ray Via PM. He may have some info?

PS:
Just went through the Aerodrome Forum with No Joy on any photos of A213. It did get me to look at Victoria Cross by Alex Revell. The inset page has a "Drawing" of A213 showing the clear panel. It also has it done in PC whatever upper surfaces and fuselage with CDL lower surfaces. The CDP is depicted as red and the cowling Aluminum ????????

Thanks for your kind help! After some thinking I may switch to A.200 for the sheer joy of hanging Le Prieur rockets on it! ;)

You are welcome. It was No Problem at all especially in that I find building a Ball Machine tempting Myself  8) By the way, I would be comfortable with a light blue on the cowling and CDP on A200. Compared to the gear legs which are "probably" Horizon blue it is a close match, JMHO.
