Jasta 4 pfalz D.III 1397/17
« on: March 24, 2018, 08:28:16 AM »
Hi all - I saw this profile online for this Jasta 4 pfalz (1397/17) - unfortunately I don't have the Jack Herris book that is mentioned as a source. Can someone confirm if this aircraft had polka-dots on the horizontal stabiliser / elevators? I imagine it would, given the very similarly marked Albatros D.V which had such markings, and presumably was flown by the same pilot?

Thanks!

Brad,
In the Herris book "Pfalz Aircraft of WWI" the only profile of the aircraft in question is a side one, and the only photo as well. No answer to your question I'm afraid, I'll dig around in the various Pfalz titles I have from Albatros Publications this evening and see if there might be an answer there.
Cheers,
Lance

Although I feel the same as you that it would I can't confirm Also a possibility that the tail color was simply black. I seem to remember 2 photos being posted LONG ago on the Drome. Probably gone now but worth a try.

PS: I see you already asked at the Drome  8)

I guess that's 3 of us; makes sense that the same application of the markings was used as on the D.V. No further light was shed on the question by a quick glance through all the great books from Ray at Albatros, hopefully someone has more.
Cheers,

Thanks everyone for your insights - looks like there's no direct evidence one way or the other. Just thought I would make sure!

Cheers,
