Aviatik D.II U-Berg 1/48 Karaya
« on: January 14, 2018, 11:00:13 PM »
This was supposed to be my last for 2017, but a hefty dose of the flu made it my first of 2018!

This is the Karaya kit, an amazing set of resin parts that was a joy to build.
I replaced all the struts with brass and painted it in Tamiya paints (except for the metal tones) and all rigging was done with Maxima 2lbs, Albion tubes and Bob's buckles.
The Autumn leaf camoflage pattern was very easy to do, three layers of sponging mustard yellow, red-brown and finally medium green over the cdl base.

pro: good fuselage halves, very good wing, decent cockpit and control panel, hardly any air bubbles and spot on with all the drawings i could find
con: resin struts (even the ones with a metal wire were weak) and the decal (broke apart on the sheet) and I feel the seat is bit small, but fits the cockpit so cou;ld be me

this is the jig I made so I could size and fit all the struts

That looks like the kind of machine that i would like to scratch build! What a super rendition of the camouflage scheme..how did you do it? I approve of the jig too - simple but effective. A fantastic model.

Super Build Hidde! That Autumn Leaf Camo is exceptional and the overall presentation just superb, lovely job on a very challenging Kit, you can be very proud of this one!

The camouflage was build up in layers with tiny pieces of foam as sponges to stipple the colours on. I came across a referance in a book that stated it was aplied over the CDL.

So I experimented a bit, to find a great recourse. The resin sets from Eduard are packed with foam sheet and these worked great! So I have a virtual endless supply in great foam for sponge work.

The first layer is mustard yellow, I made a mix 2:2:1 of Tamiya X-6:XF-60:X2.
Second layer is Terra cotta, I used Tamiya XF-79 for this
Last layer is medium green, for this i used Tamiya XF-13.

You can realy try and experiment with the mustard yellow layer as most of that layer will be coverd with the other colors.

Very fine all around. Great effort on the camo! And I can only confirm, Karaya resin kits are fine!

I love funky looking aircraft, and this is super funky! Sounds like it was a bear to build though. Very admirable result.
