Yes, I put it on my wishlist three or four years ago. Great choice - and probably quite a quick build too. Good starter choice for anyone new to WNW.

to my eye, that's the best thing about choosing to release the D.1: an entry level kit for people intimidated by rigging. especially useful now that the J.1 has got to be on the verge of selling out.

I agree with the comments above plus it’s a fascinating aircraft. Well done WnW.

Russell

I don't want to be a spoilsport and I am sure that the kit will be as brilliantly made and engineered by WNW as all their others, but the plane itself --! Just around 40 produced, getting into service in October 1918, no real impact on the air war ... it's story is as boring and dull as it's appearance ... naaa... I am waiting for the CSM Nieuport 17. THAT's a Great War plane...

I think Wingnuts have been quite shrewd with their surprise Junkers D.1 kit. I've seen many people on forums ask about an easy no-rigging subject to get them into WW1 models and the Junkers D.1 achieves that and also opens the Wingnuts door to new customer/ modellers.

I made the Roden 1/48th Junkers D.1 and it's quite a novel subject in a steampunk sort of way. Plus enormous potential for the 1919 "What If" scenario fans and plays ideally to Richard Andrews of Aviattic's fascinating new 1919 venture.

I will buy a Wingnuts Junkers D.1 for sure. Its a real surprise subject but for me, a welcome one.

as a story on the surface it's a bit 'meh' i agree. i'm a story guy, my background's movies, so things like "this is the Eindecker that Udet got his first kill in" or "this is what McCudden flew on that September Evening" are what light me up and make me take on a particular project.

however, i do also enjoy the stories of the engineering pioneers and their breakthroughs and prototypes. to my eye the D.1 is an tech pioneering story. if there's a common theme to all of the First World War, it's got to be the rapid technological advancement, and its impact.

so am i disappointed? sure (but a bit relieved as i'm new to the game, and have a lot of WNW kits still languishing on my wish list). but i'm also interested. i will buy exactly one. it will likely be my first WNW build, and this will happen approximately May (why May? i live in Thailand, all my tools and stuff, including the new ones, are in upstate New York, and i visit the states in April.

all of that said, i tend to buy multiples of aircraft with interesting stories or outstanding aces. so i'll be getting one of these, whereas i hope to acquire 9 more Albatri (for a total of 12).

Assuming the announcement is the Junkers (it could be something else, right?) I have no complaints.  I'm still a beginner when it comes to WWI modeling so a plane with little/no rigging makes it almost a "must purchase" for me.  Plus, the choice of a Junkers is appealing simply because it's something out of the ordinary.

Most importantly, when is Peter Jackson going to make a proper WWI aviation movie?

There might be something else, but the number at the show matches the number issued on the WNW site

Uschi posted a video on FB, showing the markings. there was one of these flying quonset huts that Sachsenberg, Jacobs, and Osterkamp all took for a spin. so <sigh>

i'm in.

WNW play me like a violin :(

  "Sachsenberg, Jacobs, and Osterkamp"

That's an awful lot of flying legend and talent in those 3 names ..........  I may have to reconsider! ::) ;)

I have to agree with you Dave, the Junkers does have a rather Steampunk/Dieselpunk esthetic to it. While I love the whole 'what if?' potential of this kit, what fascinates me even more is the real history behind what little use these aircraft had in that little explored time just after the war. There appears to be very little written about the Saschenberg Geschwader which is odd given the impressive list of aces that flew with it. I would love to find a good book about the subject but whole period appears to be more of an historical footnote unfortunately. From what I've been able to find Saschenberg valued these aircraft for their robustness given that their use was primarily ground attack and strafing. I imagine as a pilot, from a psychological level at least, one would feel much better protected against ground fire in a metal aircraft as opposed to a canvas one! Whether they did provide any better protection is open to debate.
Given that one of the options is for a Saschenberg aircraft, I'll definitely be getting one, possibly two as the bare metal option also looks interesting. It should be a relatively quick and straightforward build I hope. As others have noted, it will be nice to employ some 'weathering' techniques with this one! It would make for some interesting 'what if?' Jasta schemes as well.

Most importantly, when is Peter Jackson going to make a proper WWI aviation movie?

Has he given up the Dambusters project?
I don't know what's wrong with the old one and the need for a replacement--more explosions?
And the recent stuff I've seen doesn't give me much hope. I was pretty underwhelmed by Dunkirk. Yet First Light was fine, as good as any air combat movie I can think--but it was a TV movie, not a blockbuster.

After Flyboys and Red Tails, i think the market for big screen air combat movies is dead. If Sir Peter wants to go small screen, and do one man's story instead of an epic, he'd have a better chance, and make a better picture.
