Noted aviation artist Steve Anderson, who painted all of the distinctive Wingnut Wings boxart images, has made the Meng 1/24 scale Fokker Dr.1 kit, for which he also did the box art.
Steve has given his permission for his images to be shared on the Forum. He says:
Finished after three weeks. My rendition of Manfred von Richthofen's Fokker DRI 127/17, flown in the Spring of 1918.
I did the box art for this 24th scale (1/2" = 1') model kit produced by Meng. I have to say it is the most accurate plastic model kit ever produced of this WWI icon. The tooling design that went into this is very strong with superb indexing of parts. The only thing I wish had been done was to separate the elevator from the horizontal stabilizer. These planes always flew with some "down" trim for the elevator in level flight.
The factory paint job of streaked linen is watercolor with clear acrylic lacquer overall. The white borders were too narrow on fuse and rudder crosses so I widened them with a brush. The prop is also hand painted with watercolor and sealed with clear semi gloss.
Overall a very fun project. Side note, this plane is depicted in my painting, "Clash of Titans".
Our thanks to Steve Anderson for his permission to share his work.
