It looks very crisp, Toby. Are you going to blend in the lozenge surfaces a little bit?
Thanks. Not quite sure by what you mean by blend the lozenge surfaces?

I used masking tape on the wing to give it a sliglty raised aspect then sprayed over with primer and gloss varnish.

Thanks! :)

Bottom wing finished with the leading edge wing tape now fitted. A character building experience

Now for the top wing. Fortunately I have Lance's excellent build to guide me on that department.

Nice! I know what you mean by character building experience. Leading edge tapes are my biggest opportunity when building an aircraft with Lozenge wings.

Most of the fuselage is finished. Unfortunately some of the nose panels didn't marry up as close as I would like but as they'll be under the top wing hopefully the discrepancies won't be too obvious. Tbh I'm not sure if it's down to my poor modelling skills or just  bad construction of the kit. Did anyone else experience the same when they built it?

"some of the nose panels didn't marry up as close as I would like"

I had the same experience Toby. The upper deck around the gun mounts didn't mate well with the side or cheek panels and I have a slightly larger gap there then I'd like despite a lot of filing and sanding. Oddly the bottom "chin" panel from the Bren Gun PE Set fit like a glove!
You are doing a terrific job on this; I've decided to keep my eyes peeled for another as a result of following your Build. I'm looking forward to her debut in Finished Models but probably not as much as you are! ;)
Cheers,
Lance

That looks very good to me. Are you sure that anyone will notice the gaps? The finish is first class so hopefully that might distract people's attention.

Stephen.

Thanks chaps. I've even tidied up my bench. ;D
I've painted the spinner and temporarily placed the prop in situ. Also put on rear tail prior to painting and decalling.

Tail now sorted. One thing about the lozenge decals if you make a mistake which I did you can put on a patch and it's hard to tell it's actually there such is the confusion to the eye. Can the eagle-eyed here spot it? I would imagine in real life that patches were added so hopefully what I've done is true to form.

Everything has been going very well until I came to apply the cross on the tail and I realised the markings I've chosen are for an early DIII(Serial u/k but in the 8340 - 8359/17 early production batch. Ltn. Joachim von Ziegesar, Jasta 15, May 1918} whereas the kit is for a later version. The rudders are completely different along with the cowling and spinner. There is a conversion set by Loon available but as I don't have another SS DIII I'm not going to purchase it. Most unlike me as I seem to buy just about anything to do with a kit I'm building. Too far down the road on this particular bird now.
Hey ho. I'm going to carry on finishing this new hybrid.  ::)
More decals added and the main struts painted and lozenge applied.

BTW when I'm done I'll have several spare options for the SS DIII by Pheon so if anyone wants them contact me and I'll pop them in the post at a later date.

If you hadn't told I would not have noticed!
Still looking for the repair patch, but I can't find it, so good job on that! :) I like the lozenge struts, too.

Very generous offer on the decals, too -hopefully it'll inspire someone to build one too. (not me, I love the work you're putting in it, but I'm not a fan of the machine itself!)
