Turnbuckles: Advice needed

Friends,

I have no problem in making turnbuckles, using the proven method of brass-rods cut to size, combined with fishing-line for the cables.

But: What is a useable way of representing the splicing on the cables? Using the same brass-rod (that is already of tiny 0,5mm diameter) seems to be oversize. The stuff that Bertl used on his Albatros and Pfalz builds looks good but is waaay to expensive for me.

What is your method?

Stefan, Hi.

I've experimented using nothing other than the line ( I use Nylon mending thread) and Thin Cyano. Looping the cable through an eyelet spinnin it tight and applying Cyano to the twisted section while under tension. then again when set coat it again.
Yes it's fiddly, yes theres a high fail rate but I like the results when it works. (no spoilt brass tube either is a minor bonus.


Not the clearest of shots unfortunately. Paint over them to represent the fabric wrap often seen .

I've actually taken to doing complete cable assemblies off the aircraft and adjusting & fixing them later. This however comes unstuck when the mounting point is hard to access.

Just curious - what does Bertl use? I went through the excellent worn out Pfalz build thread but did not find where he named what he used...

Yep, I was thinking of the way he closes off the wire loop that fastens the running wire to the buckle - the red/brown bit in the pic below. I was thinking maybe some sort of micro shrink tube? I like how it is a smaller diameter than the brass tube (seems more like real)
