Evening,

After my 1/72 Spad project was rather curtailed by a falling Dremel drill..

I've been sent 3 Eduard 1/48th kits by the magazine  :D but I can't quite decide on which to start first? I'm leaning towards the Fokker having just (nearly) done a Spad (although the Spad in this scale is absolutely lovely); and having built the D.III before (albeit a long time ago). Although I would have to change the Fokker colour scheme as the box offering wouldn't be my choice. I think I'd go for a Aviattic 'cookie' cut set of lozenge and a separate decal sheet (any recommendations?).

All 3 kits look very nicely done...







Nice inside the box too...








The lozenge looks pretty good (although, only an underwing option)





The Fokker PE...





The Fokker (two tone?) parts...





The Spad spruces...





And finally, the Albie...





I quite like the Red D.III, but would require surgery to the fuselage to display the cowlings off as depicted.


So which one? Nice to have a choice I guess!


I'm starting another type rating course at work onto the 777 in the new year, so that will wipe out about 3 months of modelling time, so I'll see how I go on getting these finished, but will post if and when able  :D


Any input/ tips/ thoughts most welcome.

All three are excellent kits, but the Eduard SPAD is something special.  It would take the longest to build due to the rigging.  The Fokker would be the quickest and easiest.  Like you said, you would have to scratch build some framing for the engine compartment if you chose the red D.III.  Up to you, mate.

Yep, the Spad does look a bit special, but I think the quick, easy build appeals. So I reckon it's the Fokker.

Probably a daft question, but the Aviattic lozenge give you two options - alb/oaw or Fokker. Not sure which one I've got in the box? What's the difference in terms of wing lozenge? Which should I get?

Not a daft question at all, Guy.  According to Greg Van Wyngarden's Osprey book on Jasta 18 and according to the instructions in your kit, von Büren's Fokker was Albatros built.  Eduard gives you instructions on how to modify the cowling specific to von Büren's bus.  As far as the Aviattic decals go, I would go with one of the OAW/Albatros sets.  As to which one, I can't tell you since I've been unable to find a clear photo showing the undersides of his wings, so I suppose the choice is yours.  I would look at the WNW instructions on the Alb planes since their research is generally pretty good.  Get the Osprey book if you can.  There is a good photo of von Büren and his plane on page 99 showing what appears to be a repair to the top wing center section with light colored rib tapes.  Intriguing.

Looking forward to your DVII build! As for the Albatros when you do it I would Love to see the Voss bird  8) Always has been a favorite of mine!

I've seen a set of decals I really like, but these along with the Aviattic lozenge will set me back £28 - or I make the box art one for £0... will have to have a think. Seems a bit extravagant but I know I want to make this other scheme  ???

Will change the title of the thread to something more appropriate for a Fokker build!

So,

Started the Fokker this morning and surprisingly, I've got the fuselage closed up already!

I know it's not a race, but I was just enjoying myself and it seemed to go very quickly...

Really super kit, great detail in this scale and the fit is spot on so far. The only tricky bit has been the seat frame - nothing wrong with it - just fiddly.

Yep, it's all out of the box - the coloured PE is a real boon.. adds loads of lovely detail - feels like cheating really.

Just have to decide if I'm going to fork out my £28 on a few stickers  ??? If you like the colour schemes provided, this is a great value package, the box is bursting with extras.
