WNW Sopwith Pup RNAS 3(N) Squadron "Black Arrow"
« on: August 26, 2015, 02:48:01 AM »

I decided on this lovely production from the Lord of the Wings as a first blog - mainly because it's quite simple and I've made some progress with it, I took some photies so I can do a catch up! I haven't posted these anywhere else and I've decided on the colour scheme; This one:

I won't post photies of the kit contents, this is easily available on the WNW web site: I have never come across another company that makes their research available in such an open and well thought out way.

Regards,

Marc

As I don't always follow instructions, (and WNW's are great) I started with the cowling as I wanted to thin the edges and generally clean it up... but I didn't bother with the places that won't be seen...

I also started playing around with the seatbelts, making sure they would fit the seat and bending them around... Then I sprayed the cowling silver - just an undercoat.

More to come soon...

Nice choice of subject. Will you show her in the "blown over-position"?  8)

Thank You to everyone who looked in and especially for all the great comments: Thank You to Martin, RAGIII, George, ermeio, Des and Stefan, I will try to get this one completed ... and yes, Stefan, the "blown over" position is tempting... maybe even the 'righting procedure" where a line was attached to the tail-skid, fed over the belly and under carriage and the aircraft was righted by pulling it over the propeller and onto the wheels again! I'll give that some thought... I do have to apologise for a bit of random posting: The following photograph is actually the first one: I removed lots of components from the sprues, carefully checking to see the part numbers were right, labeling them in pencil if there were any that looked too similar, then giving them a gentle wash to remove the mould release agent... This can be fun, and dry fitting showed just how accurate the mouldings are...

Then I proceeded to add some PE plates to the wings (For stepping on) and starting to spay the interior... just silver for the metals and buff for the interior linen..

Then I separated out the parts that would be basically metal and gave them a quick coat of silver... I use Tamiya acrylics a lot, thinned 50 50 with their own acrylic thinners, quick, cheap and cheerful!

At the same time I undercoated all the wooden parts like the cockpit frames (here just dry fitted) the prop dashboard struts and floorboards in Dark yellow, so I could work on the wooden effect...

OK, now to search photobucket for more images!

Happy Modelling!

Marc

Hi Everyone! I found some more photies so time for an update...

Hi Gregory, Thank you for joining in, and yes, a great easier kit by WNW, i have seen your builds on other sites, wonderful stuff!
Hi Lukas, Thank You for joining in!
Suzanne, it's a pleasure to welcome you, I hope it gets you going with a WNW kit...
Des, Thank you for commenting, these are older photos, the build is much further, but not complete yet... we are catching up...
RAGIII, thanks for following along...

Well, next I started painting the insides, a very neutral shade to represent clear-doped linen on the insides, and picking out the woodwork in a woody brown... not that neat, but not much will be seen when everything is closed up...

Then paint up some ammo canisters.. just silver undercoat...

Then had to paint the Vickers, Gunmetal, quick wash of black and a little highlighting with silver rub 'n buff, I don't like guns to be too dark, especially if they are tucked away under the top wing...

And then the instrument panel. My technique here is fairly standard: After the brown undercoat, I used thinned oil paints (W&N Burnt umber) to create a grainy appearance and allow it a few days to dry. Then coat that with Tamiya Clear Yellow acrylic, airbrushed on in a thin lcoat to imitate the varnish. Then I pick out the instrument bezels in black or brass. When it's dry add the WNW instrument face decals, they're good! Then a touch of gloss acrylic varnish to represent the glass...

Regards,

Marc
