New PayPal Phishing Scam
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:55:17 AM »
not sure where to put this, but I got this notice from my bank, and I think forum members ought to know about this as a lot of us use PayPal frequently:

Quote
Fake PayPal payment reversal notification leads to phishing:

PayPal phishing attempts take many forms, and one of the most often used techniques is fake emails containing a warning and a prompt to act quickly.

An active phishing campaign of this sort is currently targeting users, trying to make them believe that a payment they received was reversed:

The link in the email, which apparently takes the victims to PalPal's "Resolution Center", actually leads to a spoofed PayPal login page.

If they enter their login credentials and submit them, they will be redirected to another fake page containing a "Dispute Resolution" form that asks for their personal and payment card information, which will also, as the login credentials, be sent to the phishers once the "Submit" button is pressed.

"Because PayPal, by its very nature, conducts almost all of its business via email and the web, PayPal customers are a prime target for phishing scammers," Hoax-Slayer explains, and advises: "It is always safest to login your PayPal account by entering the web address into your browser's address bar or via an official PayPal app."

In this particular case, the use of a generic greeting ("Dear Customer") and the use of the email address in place of the customer's name is a clear indication that the email is fake - PayPal addresses their customers by their name, because unlike the scammers, the company actually knows their full names.

My wife has had two recent issues with Paypal.  First we got a bill for a Paypal credit card.  She doesn't have a Paypal credit card.  Than we got a letter from a collection agency stating that she owed on her Paypal account.  She doesn't have a Paypal account.  I have spent a couple of hours on the phone with Paypal. I am hoping that this is over but my conversations with Paypal haven't left me confident.

I know this isn't related to the phishing but it's more Paypal issues that make me less comfortable that they have access to my banking info.

I am beginning to think you are more likely to be robbed on the internet than mugged on the street.

I'm dealing with PayPal on a daily basis with transactions going to all four corners of our planet and to date I have never had an issue, PayPal have been brilliant, some of their fees are a litte high but that is what you pay for excellent service. I also receive spam on a daily basis and a lot of them are supposedly from PayPal asking me to update my account or my account will be suspended, these type of things just get deleted. The spammers are getting better and better at what they do and are making their spams look authentic, but anything I feel is just a little bit suss gets trashed immediately, it pays to be on your toes all the time.
