Looking really slick, Ian.  Amazing all that detail in such a small space.

Well done!

A little more progress in the last few days.  The fuselage and lower wing are glued together, painted and decalled.  I used a grey primer under thin coats of red paint - I had read that the red colour should be quite dark, so a darker primer would help.  The fuselage/wing has been coated with Klear for the decalling, but I will spray satin varnish later, but not on the cowling as I want this to retain a more glossy finish to differentiate from the fabric.

I also painted the cowling but after priming with mr metal iron.  The kit engine has minimal detail so I added L shaped bits of .4mm brass tube to represent push rods.  There is no detailing on these, but they are only visible from underneath.  The engine and cowling are sat just for the pics.

Thanks folks :)

The red paint is Revell Aqua Carmine Red no 36.  I read elsewhere a lengthy debate on how dark the red on the original aircraft was, and the strong argument was for a darker blood shade.

In natural light rather than camer flash, this has applied quite dark, especially over the darker primer, and I am quite pleased with the colour achieved.  I had one mishap with the port side (after painting and Klear coating) with a very careless mr metal fingerprint, but with careful cleaning with micromesh and touch up paint and Klear, this is all fixed.  Good job I missed the decals - but only just!

Great work, Ian!  The picture of the "true colour" in natural light
is gorgeous!  It gives a good look at the superb job you have done
on the red.  Terrific progress, my friend, and I look forward to the
next updates. :D

Cheers,
Ernie :)

It's coming along very nicely, Ian, and I agree with Ernie about the natural light colour.

Best wishes

Thanks for posting which red you used Ian. I think it looks spot on compared to a photo I saw of one of the struts from MvR's tripe in the AWM.

Thank you.

Today I prepared and painted the rest of the control surfaces.  These are the same as the fuselage, ie painted red and coated with Klear.  All except the metal parts will get a satin spray before final assembly.

I deliberately left the top cowling a shade darker than the rest for a bit of variety.  The engine cowling will look different still as it will stay glossy.  Here again the pics are with the flash, so the colour reproduction isn't true to life, however the colour matched that shown above.

The mid and upper wings, tail and elevator and the engine and its own cowling are only sat in place here for the pics.   For a cheap kit, the fit is excellent - there is no tape or temporary glue holding this all together, and no cabanes yet.

The model is sat on my Revell Carmine Red paint pot to show the size. even in 1:48 this is a tiny model.

The DR.1 looks great, Ian!  It sounds like Revell has done well with their
engineering as you have mentioned the excellent fit of parts. Very good
update and I look forward to your next.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks Ernie, Terri.

Yes this is a re-box of the Eduard kit.  I think the sprues even have Eduard stamped on them.  I have the Weekend version but I doubt I could do it in a weekend!  I don't think I can avoid streaking on my next Dr1.
