How many of us are focusing on WWI?
« on: February 09, 2015, 02:44:44 AM »
I have noticed a number of postings about selling off parts or most of the non-WWI (and in one instance, the 1:48 WWI) kits to fund buying more Wingnut Wings, WWI kits and aftermarket goodies. Aside for a very few kits, I seem to be in the process of doing this too. Anyone else?

It is somehow satisfying to me to have specialized in WWI, and mostly Wingnut Wings kits.

My stash is 90% WNW with the balance a Hobbycraft camel.

If WNW hadn't come along I don't believe I'd be modelling at all as doing another spitfire would bore me to tears and jets are even duller.

Ww1 planes are just more interesting with wood, linen, fabric, metal, leather, loz, rigging to have a go at.

For the past year or so all I've been building is WWI planes.  They're just a lot more interesting than WWII or jets.

I always built 1/48 World War II aircraft only. Like most of us I started build building when I was about 6 years old. Stopped in high school as my interest were partying and girls. Started up again when I was about 25. Now married, 18 years in September, mortgage, NO KIDS, I want to start back up again. I think it was Dave who posted that he quit smoking to fund the Wingnut kits, that is what I want to do as well. The money I would spend on cigarettes, I can spend on Wingnut kits. My wife will even help me build she said as 1/32 is big and with the arthritis in her hand and fingers she may have trouble with small parts.  I have 4 Wingnut Wings kits. Gotha, Rumpler C.IV (Early), Fokker E.I (Early), and a Fokker E.II/E.III (Early). Got the World War I aviation bug about 6 or 7 years ago. The rest of my kits are 1/48 World War II Aircraft. Granted about 7 of them are Ki-44 Tojo's, 2 B-17F's, 2 B-24D's, and an assortment of fighters and bombers. 1/32 I have a Ki-44 Tojo and a P-47. I also have some 1/48 Korean War aircraft and I will keep those. I mainly want to focus now on World War I aircraft (Wingnut kits), and Korean War aircraft.

pretty much focusing on 1/32 WW1 but also have some WW2 and jet kits that I am interested in. Also have done an occasional sci-fi or formula 1 car kit when I really need a change of pace....

So maybe 70% WW1 currently?

I only model 1/32. The majority of the stash is WWI - WNW, Roden, Encore, Special Hobby & Academy's Camel.

I've some interesting WWII subjects, like Trumpeters Avenger, Silver Wings CR.42 & Hasegawa's Japanese fighters. But I steer clear of 109's, Spitfires, 190's, Mustangs, etc.

I've always preferred WWI planes over most others, but only recently have I really been bitten by the bug, in no small part because of WNWs. But before this, I modeled trains, cars, arctitecture, ships, etc., always from this same time period. There's just something really appealing to me, as gcn pointed out, with the wood, linen, metal, leather, etc.  It's mechanical and engineered, but also has a nice hand built craftsmanship to it that later periods lack.  This is also why I rarely build OOB. I prefer to scratch build parts, if not the whole, and personalize wherever possible.

Purely WW1 aircraft, my stash is made up of WW1 aircraft kits with two 1:48 scale Tamiya Lancasters that were given to me, I will never build them. I also only build 1:32 scale WW1 and love the early and pre war types as you can tell by the scratch builds I did. Even though I have more kits in my stash than I will ever build in my life time I will continue to buy any new 1:32 scale WW1 aircraft released regardless of the manufacturer.

Prior to discovering WWI bips and, in particular, WnW, I was heavily into WWII armor. I've accumulated quite the stash of ground targets and, yes, I'm now in the process of selling 75% of them. I'm not going to make the mistake (ha!) of buying tons of bips, but I already have eight or so in my new stash.

Currently totally focused on WWI, but I have a soft spot for Italian and French planes from WWII, if more were available in large scales I'd be tempted...

I have been focusing on 1/48 scale WW1 for almost 25 years, I built old Aurora and Hawk kits in the early 1990's until Eduard came out with a new SSW D.III, Fokker E.III and Brandenburg D.1, which really upped the detail available to us back then.  today I am staying with the Eduard and Roden 1/48 kits, with some resin ones as well, but have not been bitten by the 1/32 scale bug as I have no place to store the finished models. I also collect a lot of other kits, 1/25 scale Corvettes and other Chevys, some Vietnam era figures and armor, and even some WW2 aircraft but have only completed a few of these over the years.

My interest in aviation extends to my early childhood, and my period of interest (Anything pre-1945) extends to that time too. When I decided back in the 1990's to get back into aircraft modeling, most of my focus was on WWI. My modeling interests insofar as a/c are concerned, is primarily on 1/72nd for a number of reasons. I've bought or have been given six  WNW kits, but who knows if I'll ever build them, I've got too much in the 1/72nd pipeline to even give it a thought. I am culling my stash as my interests are changing, becoming more refined:

WWI: Western Front, Italian Front
'Tweener Period: USAAC/USN/USMC a/c
WWII: PTO, ETO (North Africa/Med/Italy/Western Europe)

Jets?  Oh please.  ::) They're not even proper aeroplanes, they're broken, they are missing their propellers.  ;) Those things have always left me cold insofar as modeling them goes, but like watching y'all build WNW kits, I can appreciate the work of others.

But yeah, there's something I find satisfying about not only building, but reading and researching aircraft from the Great War.

AND

Let me add this: Over the years (since the late 90's), I've found the WWI modeling crowd to be more friendly and helpful overall than a lot of other era-focused groups. I'm not condemning other era-focused groups, although I can think of one that is primarily inhabited by folks that resemble rear orfices. This forum and the 72nd Aircraft forum are the most friendly and helpful day-in/day-out I have found. Those two forums are the only ones I visit with any regularity.

I have probably said this elsewhere but I am now Wholly committed to 1/32nd scale. Of the Kits I have in the stash all are WW1 with about 4 exceptions. I build Squadron Histories,or that has always been my intent, so I have a Meteor F4 waiting to be built as a 56 sq. bird, and yes there will be Spitfires and Hurricanes.  I already have 109s for Richthoffen groups, and Probably will get an F86 or two for the 27th Fighter Sq. and JG71. That being said the WW1 builds are now, and have been for a long time, my FOCUS! The Squadron Histories arise from WW1.

PS: I have already traded 90% of my WW1, WW2, and Jets in 1/48th for 1/32nd stuff or paints and accessories.

My interests seem to go in cycles of a few years each. So I would build that genre only. Im glad im where im at right now!
I have done sailing ships, warships, ww2 planes, armor, sci-fi, and 25 mm and 54 mm figures.
I've been at this ww1 spot for a couple of years and hope to stay interested for many more.
