Hello Dave:

Looking good.  This is an all too overlooked kit and it builds up into a decent model.  At the hands of a skilled modeler it really comes to life.  You are doing a great job of bringing it about.  I have two, but sadly not the International version with the stallion.  Looking forward to seeing you work through the build.

Hi Dave, as Petrov I also could print the horse decals if you want, I am printing it in 1/32 tomorrow for my Nieuport...
In any case you can use my SVG file if you're printing the decals yourself

Dave

Hi Dave, the work you did on this Italian aircraft is stunning!
I love the camo and all nut let me pinpoint the only defect in the model: the center section of the tricolore under the wings of the italian planes is NEVER painted white!
Only the green and red sections were painted, for example in the Ni17 I am currently working the center section remains aluminum as the rest of the plane, in your case it should be CDL.

By the way that is only a detail that does not affect the quality of the work.

Argg tell me now :-D

I know on the Nieuport 11s the centre isnt white, but I had no evidence either way for the Spad 13.
I will give some thought to respraying this area if i can do it with minimal damage.

Sorry for not telling you that before, but I had not found your WIP thread earlier, in any cst tat was the rule in italian aircrafts, when painting the "tricolore" beneath the lower wing the center section was never painted white, just left as it was, in some cases they painted the tricolore on the undersurface of the top wing as well (as for the ANSALDO SVA 5 and for the Ni17s).
In any case if you need more infos on italian planes ask me, I have a lot of documentation and maybe would be able to find additional information.

As per the griffon, I would be able to produce a SVG file of it but it would take a long time because I have not so much time to dedicate to my hobbies so don't raly on me for this, in any case I will do my best to produce one. Another warning I can give you is that there is by no mean any photo portraying the starboard side of Baracca's SPAD, the Griffon was the crest of the 91 squadriglia and many pilots had it painted on their SPADs but the official version here is that Baracca carried the black horse heading towards the nose on both sides, also because there are pictures of his Nieuports with the horse on both sides so _probably_ he kept this solutions throughout his other planes...

There is this photo in the Italian Air Force archives:

portraying Baracca and 3 other pilots in front of a 91 Sq SPAD showing the Griffon, but there is no evidence that this plane was the one of Major Baracca...

:-)

I hope this helps!!!

Yes - I can do that - please send me the height dimension for the size of each and I will get them printed onto decal paper.

Thanks!

Hallo, I had some time off work yesterday and to help Dave I made a vector copy of the Griffon used as Squadron crest by 91a Squadriglia.
DOWNLOAD IT HERE

I also improved the horse drawing by trimming the white area around it, you can download it at the same link shown in my previous message.

So, Petrov you can use those drawings to print the decals for Dave if you want.

Wow, thanks Antonio, these are superb!, I may actually finish the kit after all.

I have a 1/32 ww1 decal sheet in preperation ( 4 Lafayette aircraft) but I have been thinking about a sheet of 4 Italian aircraft next, if I do this, may I use this artwork?

Many thanks,

Dave

Glad you liked the Griffon Dave, of course everybody in this forum can use these drawings ...I wouldn't call them "Artwolrk"  :-) for NON COMMERCIAL purposes.

Petrov, the Griffon and the horse were black on all the planes. There is a quarrel about the red horse but there is no evidence of this story and all the personal markings as far as I know were painted in black. So the officially recognized version of the griffon and the horse (as far as I know) is black.

I look forward to seeing the completed model Dave!

Antonio

PS Dave if you want to share info about other Italian planes you are planning next dont hesitate to PM me and maybe I can help you with the other decals. Ciao!

I forgot to say that if you have a close look to the picture I posted Saturday you can see te difference between the Griffon (black) and the outer band of the roundel (rd).
Yes, when the camouflaged SPADs Blériot built were assigned to the Squadriglie the colors of the roundels were inverted because the outer circle (green up to then) was not visible on the camo paint.

I just read an article by the Historical Office of the Italian Air Force stating the total uncertainty of the Griffon on the starboard side of the Baracca's SPAD XIII fuselage. Indeed the Griffon was on some other SPADS flown by pilots not having a personal marking, but usually the personal markings were repeated on both sides.

at last a day off to do some modelling "Il Cavallino Rampante"

Ive been pretty busy, and the last thing I wanted to do was wrestle with the upper wing and strut alignment on the Hobbycraft Spad, however its got to be done sooner or later.
I have already assembled the kit and found the wing was out of alignment, so i had to tear it all apart and lock it in the KiwiResin rigging jig and start again.
Now Ill have a long break and talk myself into rigging it, do any touch ups, and finish with a coat of flat clear.
