Gnome Monosoupape 9 Type N 160 hp
« on: January 19, 2014, 05:48:12 AM »
This engine is fitted to the Sopwith Camel replica operated by The Vintage Aviator Ltd from Hood Aerodrome, Masterton, New Zealand. The Gnome Monosoupape 9 Type N is a nine-cylinder rotary engine and it has a slightly larger diameter crankcase compared to the more commonly used 100 hp B-2. It was fitted to Nieuport 28C, Sopwith F.1 Camel and Morane-Saulnier AI according to Wikipedia

This repro Camel appears regularly at airshows around the country. It was built by Gerry Thornhill and Carl Swanson, completed in June 1985. It was imported to New Zealand in 1997.

Thanks James for posting the photos. The Camel still appears to be in pretty good condition considering its age and use, built in '85 and flown on a regular basis in NZ since '97.
