Montex Masks
« on: July 12, 2013, 02:34:40 AM »
Hello all,

I posted the following about Montex Masks at the end of my Pfalz topic in the completed build section, but I figured that probably no one would see it there. I don't know if they've already been discussed, but I'd thought I'd highlight the fact that they are out there and you can get a very realistic finish...

A real beauty as all of the others have said! I am interested in hearing more about the Montex Masks?
RAGIII

Hello Rick,

Yes the Montex Masks were really very good. I did deliberately choose a very simple scheme as it was the first time I've used them - the crosses are child's play to use - I imagine a set of Roundels would take a little more effort.  I think there is only one Montex set for the Pfalz which gives you two options - but I wasn't keen on either so picked my own one in the end but utilised the masks. One added benefit was that I was able to reuse the top wing masks to very lightly spray the underside of the top wing to replicate the shadow through the linen. You can just see it on the photos if you look hard!

I've just looked on the Montex website and here are a few of the WW1 1/32 options - As good as the Wingnut decals are, you just can't beat that painted on look..

Check them out...

Ps they are specific to manufacturers kits but I can't see why you couldn't use, say, the Roden Triplane set on a Wingnuts kit.. They can't be that different in dimensions surely...

Anyone else have experience of Montex?

Or this one is better as it has the colour scheme illustrations... (bottom of the page and top of the next) :

Just been thinking about montex masks for roundels and crosses - are they re-usable?

I am looking to try painting national symbols rather than using decals.

I've used quite a few on ww2 stuff and in 1/24 they are better than decals. You can do great fading and weathering.  If you're careful, you could use a mask twice, first as a positive, then masking the surround and using the backing sheet next time. They are great, but use a photo as they are not too accurate on placement.

I've used Montex masks on some of my later aircraft and really like them as you can weather the markings paint job. It also allows you to match paints for some marking/cam schemes.  I have not tried to reuse them, but believe you should be able to. I have used masks that look like the same material on some of my tanks and have reused the masks a couple of times. Currently I am dabling in making my own and so bought a Silhouette Portrait to attempt this.

Yeah I bought a Silver Bullet die cutter a while back, it is the bees knees, I cut Tamiya kabuki tape with it to make all kinds of masks. Also use it to cut thin metal, scribe brass and a million other things. Absolute game changer.

Die cut masks to over paint decals

Die cutting texture decals :

Scribing brass for precise layout of tiny parts:

Card stock "jiffy wall" to allow remodeling:

Copper sheet die cut for wheel covers:
