1/48 Tamiya P-47D-5-RE
« on: February 02, 2026, 03:03:28 PM »
This is Tamiya's 1/48 scale P-47D kit built to represent Captain Virgil Meroney's "Sweet Louise" from the 487th Fighter Squadron of the 352nd Fighter Group in March of 1944. The build was inspired after watching a television program featuring a recent archeological dig in Wessex, UK to find the remains of an aircraft from that same squadron that had crashed during training just two months beforehand. Other than using PrintScale decals, the model was built out-of-the-box (although I stole the seatbelts from an Eduard etched metal set). The two figures give a perspective to the grand size of this aircraft, and are from ICM. The Tamiya decals were a nightmare, but I really wanted to see this thing completed.
Cheers,
Gary

Wowzer another off the production line Gary  8)

It's certainly a big old brute of a bird and I suspect it felt reassuring to have all that airframe wrapped around you when flying. Great idea to add the coupe of figures to help the sense of scale and lovely finish all round

Lovely work all round Gary. Very nice finishing and subtle weathering. The figures are really helpful in giving a sense of scale and are very nicely done. You are churning them out!

Stunning Model as always Gary! I love the very subtle weathering and chipping. Gives that OD scheme life!

Stunning work Gary! Have never built the Tamiya Jug but by all accounts it's a nice build. Your finish is magnificent!

Now that is a lovely p-47 .

Built a few of the Tamiya kit's , it is a fantastic kit to build and is fairly well detailed for it's age .
