1/32 Le Rhone 9c for Nieuport 11?
« on: April 17, 2022, 11:57:24 PM »
Just looking at available kits for a Nieuport 11.  Special Hobby seems to be better than AModel, though both have their problems.

A decent Le Rhone 9C would be a nice addition.

I can't see any 1/32 9c kits around though.

Though there is the sprue for the 9c from the CSM kit of the N.XXI...

I have asked CSM if they would sell that sprue separately.

Cannot find a Super Hobby 1/32 Nieuport 11 kit (32015) anywhere except for one on eBay in the US that won't ship anywhere else at US$32..

I can however get the the Super Hobby 1/32 Nieuport 16 kit in store in Oz.   I gather the only differences are the 110hp Le Rhone 9J in the 16 compared to 80hp 9C in the 11.  The 16 also has an added headrest in the cockpit.  Anything else?

I just need to get the 9C sprue from CSM (from the XXI kit), which shouldn't be a problem as I just found I was missing the PE from my CSM Nieuport 17 Late...

Would also need to have a different cowling...aperture larger on the 16 than the 11.

That's a fantastic shot of Ball.  I found myself staring at it for quite some time, then I suddenly noticed the aircraft was perhaps a Caudron G.III :0

I believe you may be correct.

I was mainly looking at the cowl and engine, and I believe Albert Ball got his first kill in a Nieuport 16. Hence the picture, although I believed it to be a Nieuport 11.  Didn't look at the undercarriage though...

Apparently taken at Ruffy-Baumann School of Flying at Hendon during the summer of 1915 which operated Caudrons. Though they may have had a dozen G2 aircraft at Hendon in 1915.  Some discussion at http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37274&page=3.

It's an interesting photo though with Ball having that distant look, reminiscent of veteran pilots on the front.

Copper State Models advised that they would sell the engine sprue (sprue E) for the Le Rhone 9C for 10 euros + shipping.  I'm pretty happy with that so will buy a few for the stash.

BTW, Special Hobby replied to me regarding availability of the Nieuport 11.  I knew they were sold out, but no harm in asking...

Hello,

the old kit is unfortunately completely sold out but in the future we would like to release a modified version under a new catalogue number. There are no details right now but please keep following our blog and Facebook site - as soon as we have news to share we will publish all there.

Have a nice day
