Non WW1 build: Supermarine 6B
« on: March 22, 2022, 04:59:42 AM »
Hi friends,
here is my current work on the bench, I have always been fascinated by the Schneider Trophy race, so I have collected some boxes of planes taking part in it, so far I have

- Morane Saulnier “WR” 1/72
AZ Models Kit
Took part to the Schneider in Monaco 1914 with Roland Garros

- Sopwith Schneider / Tabloid 1/48
Special Hobby Kit
Won the II edition of the Schneider Trophy in Monaco 1914

- Savoia-Marchetti S.65 1/72
Karaya Resin Kit
It was designed for the Schneider Trophy, it took off for the first and last time in January 1930 on the Garda Lake (northern Italy) but it had a bad take off and hit the water surface causing the death of the Pilot so it did not race.

- Macchi MC 72 1/50
Artiplast Kit
Took part to the race in 1931

And the last kit I found was this which is on my bench since July las year:

- Supermarine S6B 1/72
Airfix Kit
Designed for the 1931 edition run between Calshot and the Isle of Wight: it won that race

Some photos taken last year:
The propeller, far too thick and the spiner is not very nice:

This is my reinterpretation

The floaters with some weight inside

...and finally closed

The cockpit (originally totally blank)

Then I tried to build some structure over the fuselage that resembles a bit the original

Inside the box there was no canopy, so I will try to make one from scratch.

Thanks for watching

Andonio

I love Schneider cup racers, pity they're only available in resin or, recently as short run. Challenging as the old Airfix.

Oh yes, that is a very interesting subject!

As you may know I have build the Sopwith Schneider in 1/48 and thought about adding other racers in 1/48 to that:

Macchi Castoldi M.C.72

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/amp-48018-macchi-castoldi-mc72--1317147

Piaggio-Pegna PC.7

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/amp-48011-piaggio-pegna-pc7--1159525

Supermarine S.5

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/amp-48009-supermarine-s5--1183653

planned was a Supermarine S-6

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/mikromir-tba48-2022a-amp-supermarine-s-6-6a-6b--1403948

And there is a wonderful resin kit of the Gloster VI (with PE brass radiator and struts cast in brass)

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/wiener-modellbau-manufactur-wmm48004-gloster-vi--178245

But I refrained from doing so because I still have so many biplane kits in storage.
And now the war has broken out and the AMP kits from Ukraine will hardly be available. Prices have exploded for kits still in stock at various dealers :o

Cheers,
Frank

Good to see a very old Airfix kit being given some materful treatment. I am certain that this one will be another gem.

Excellent start Andonio, a legendary aircraft I'm excited to see you tackle.

I'm keen to build an S.5 but, because my tastes are odd, it'll be the flying replica G-BDFF built in the 1980s!

Thank you Giuseppe, I was not able to find any other model kit than those I mentioned...

Thank you Frank for the many suggestions about different kits, I will complete the set I quoted and then (hoping this idiot war will be over) maybe ask for the others...
I followed your build of the Sopwith Schneider, I'll do the same, I am not sure how to make the masks for the big SOPWITH writings on the fuselage sides...
I have this kit

Good to see a very old Airfix kit being given some materful treatment. I am certain that this one will be another gem.

Stephen.

I'll do my best, it's a very basic model!

Excellent start Andonio, a legendary aircraft I'm excited to see you tackle.

I'm keen to build an S.5 but, because my tastes are odd, it'll be the flying replica G-BDFF built in the 1980s!

I'm not sure about the differences between S.5 and S.6B
The kit I am working on is this

Thanks everybody for watching and replying

Hallo friends,

this is how the workbench looks today, the S6B is slowly and silently progressing when I find some moments to dedicate to relax...

I have glued the struts to the floaters, then I need to put 4 eyelets to rig them to the fuselage

While handling the fuselage it fell to the ground from my clumsy hands and the two horizontal tailplanes have broken away from the tail and the pins broke inside the fuselage. So I glued back the two planes without pins and now the glue is curing...

The blue paint has smudged over the silver, after such a long time not modeling I find my hands are more insecure. I should touch it up but I used a Tamiya spray can so I dont know how to touch up, maybe spraying some color in a small box and taking it with the brush?

OK Thanks for looking, I'll post some more ASAP.

Antonio

Thank you Zac, I think my next work will be the Roden 1/32 scale Spad XIII Early kit I got as a prize from Dave W.
I am studying how much real the figure of caporal Eugene Bullard (Tout sang qui coule est rouge) is real or fake, no photo of his plane with the famous phrase can be found on the web...
No decals around, of course...
