Stachel's Pfalz (replica) in 1/72
« on: July 05, 2015, 02:24:32 PM »
This is Roden's 1/72 Pfalz D.IIIa with the Encore decals and minor mods to represent one of the two replicas built for The Blue Max in 1965. This aircraft is now on display at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in New Zealand.

This shows the nasty white residue from earlier in the build. I'll just leave it, likewise the slightly flaky decals on the top wing. Could be worse!

It was a looooong build but it was great to get some rigging practice and experience with pre-cut lozenge decals. AND I've finally got ZK-JPI in my collection.

Now to do it all over again in 1/32 sometime down the line...

She's a stunner, Zac!  Remarkable what you have accomplished in such a tiny scale.
Cheers,
Bud

Your "Blue Max" Pfalz really looks the part! Outstanding results! I really enjoyed following your build!

Great looking moldel Zac!  :)
Even the blemish on the undersurfaces doesn't look unrealistic.
When I first saw the movie as a kid I thought that lozenge was just terrific. When I found out it wasn't historically correct I was a little disappointed. Still am as I reckon it would do the job as well as the real stuff and really looks the part on a Pfalz and a DRI.  Will look forward to your 1/32 version.
I think you have convinced me to do one as well!  ;D

Lovely build and in the correct scale! I think that you should be proud of this one - the blemish is too small to worry about and cannot be seen from most normal angles.

I've just seen how dark the photos are...sorry about that.

But thank you all for your very kind words! It means a lot coming from such talented folks.

The 1/32 version is a while away - especially as I need to buy both the Encore and WNW kits - but should be a fun challenge, especially when it comes to making the replica's mods. For this build I used an old Airfix Tiger Moth prop up front and turned the Mercedes into a 4cyl DH, but otherwise apart from the stretched sprue it's OOB.

Now to do the Revell Fokker D.VII in the same colours! I've already started it as a testbed for Aviattic TBM lozenge...

Unashamedly bumped to point out I've fixed the broken (thanks, Photobucket) links. And to add a couple of pics of the real deal I've taken over the years (I do love her so):

Very nice model, Zac. I keep my fingers crossed for your purchase of WNW Pfalz D.IIIa.

And thank you for bringing back my memories from my visit to Omaka two years ago.

My favourite place in the world, and one of my favourite individual aeroplanes - although according to restorer and pilot the late Stuart Tantrum, the old maxim "if it looks right it flies right" didn't apply to this replica!

Your country has many more other "favourite places" for me  :)

And it is indeed surprising, what the pilot said qbout this bird. Well, probably the original was much better.

One of the team responsible for replicating the iconic paint job during the restoration told me this on Facebook: "yep she was nicknamed “rubber wings” by the pilots of the movie, it’s a floating rear spar much like the DV Albatros, the lower wings oscillate at speed and can seperate, this phalz like the DV a had the aileron cables go through the lower main which meant if the failed you lost control of the ailerons". So far aside from the film aircraft* there's been only one other flying full-size D.III replica built (by Ron Kitchen) although I've never read anything about its flying characteristics, and there's a long-running build thread at The Aerodrome for what looks to be a very accurate rendition, so unfortunately we don't know how well a modern example can fly.

*It should be noted that the other pfalse Pfalz built for The Blue Max, the Tiger Moth fuselage-based example by Tony Bianchi/Personal Plane Services, is also owned by Sir Peter Jackson/TVAL and not only flies regularly at airshows but is the next step in their pilot training after the Tiger Moth and then (I believe) DH.5. And, rather appropriately, its registration is ZK-FLZ  ;D
