Richie
A swab just damp with alcohol will remove the oil.

Yeah, my excited kid starts getting out of hand once decals start going on. That's when "what comes next in the build" gives way to "how do I get the next color on." That excited kid will make you a job of work if you don't sit on him...hard sometimes.

Very impressed indeed with the fin marking Richie. I cannot understand why you are concerned about being stressed with the rigging as there is not a great deal on this machine - they were relatively simple compared with some other types!

Looking very good indeed now that you have markings on the fuselage.

Lovely work on the Tripe, Richie.
Good luck with the final stages of your build.

Rig away!

Thanks chaps, I might just mist another coat over the oily fingerprint, the thought of possibly stripping the paint is not a pleasant one!

I've only rigged 1 model before (WNW Eindecker) and found it quite awkward due to the CA glue taking so long to set. I also missed a few lines where I hadn't planned it very well. I'll see if I can post pics of it in the completed builds sections.

Got to dash, got online guitar students all afternoon. Will be back to grabbing whatever moments I can between lessons for a while. Might help with the rigging, one line at a time and no rigging fatigue syndrome. :)

Excellent work with the masks! It's much more rewarding to see the markings take shape when you've painted them than when you've used decals, I think. My biggest problem is that I'm too quick on the ball, and tend to remove the masks too quickly causing damage in the process.

I can't remember seeing anyone make such great strides in their Modeling in such a short time! You are doing exceptional work and I am sure the rigging will be No Different!

Thanks so much!

Fredrik, I agree completely it is so rewarding peeling the masks off to reveal freshly painted markings. I also get over eager and remove them too soon sometimes. It's just so tempting! Recently I've been taping parts down to a board before masking and spraying. I then put the board well out of the way so I can't be tempted. The only problem is that I find leaving them on too long causes problems too. :)

Rick that is a very kind compliment, it means so much to me. You have been so supportive to me since I joined this year. A lot of my improvements are a direct result of this. I can't thank you enough!

Well, that’s an amazing triplane. No one could look at your works with a merciful eye, as you call yourself a „beginner“ (2nd ever build log).  No, that’s the work of a real pro!   ;)

Richie,
I'll add my compliments as well, your skills have improved to a remarkable level in record time, this Tripe is a very fine model! It's nice to see someone like yourself join the group, reap the benefits, and produce such remarkable results in such a short time. It's also inspiring to see how much you're enjoying it all!
Cheers,
Lance

Lance, thanks so much for the compliment. I remember your kindness from my first build. I was struggling and felt so intimidated by the WNW Camel but you and the rest of the group kept me encouraged and advised me to put it to one side for a while. I've learned a lot from following the builds on this forum. There's plenty more to learn so I'll keep smiling, making mistakes and hopefully learning from them.

There's a long way to go with this one still, I must avoid switching into little boy modelling mode and rushing it at the end. As a 10 year old I once completely built and painted an Airfix B29 in an afternoon so I could show my Dad how clever I was when he got home from work. I can still hear his laughter! :)

You're doing a great job on this, Richie.  Keep forging ahead.

I have never built a perfect model (came close a couple of times in the last 20 years).
I constantly keep in mind that great modelers recover from and learn from the mistakes.
If you can't undo the mistake, hide it.  ;D

Thanks Ken and Early Bird Fan, I very much appreciate your interest and kindness!

Not a great deal to report, the weather has been glorious in the UK so rather than sit in the man cave I have been in the garden having a few mammoth whittling sessions. Although I have a stunning wooden prop from Alex at Proper Plane I just fancied being outdoors.

For the first prop I went old school and taped the kit prop to a blank, drew round it and carved. I was in a hurry with this one so used CA glue to glue the veneers together.

For the next two I scanned the kit prop and used my cutting machine make the profile and glued with proper wood glue. These carved much better!

I used wood stain to darken the props before coating in suoer thin CA glue and buffing with a finger nail polisher. I got the idea for coating with CA from Rodgers guitar machine heads which are the finest you can buy. The finish on them is amazing!

Triplane Props by Richard Williams, on Flickr

As you can see the results are variable, I like the shape of the top one but I drilled the hole for the prop shaft off centre and it is a bit undersized.

The second was made with all one kind of veneer but I seem to have been on the rum and made one blade much smaller than the other, not sure how that happened!

The bottom one I like, it's nowhere near the level of the one from Proper Plane but it's my own work and as I made all the markings myself I may as well use my home made prop too.

The next step is to see if I can scratch a boss for it, I have a nice resin one if what I produce is horrible!

Thanks for reading, happy modelling everybody
Richie
