Silver Spifire - Airfix 1/48 FR Mk.XIV
« on: October 06, 2019, 02:14:58 AM »
Finished this up a couple days ago.  In spite of a few challenges, I'm very pleased with the results.   Aftermarket upgrades include Eduard's Look instrument panel, photo-etch "Steel" seat belts, resin exhausts and wheels.  Finish is Alclad RAF High Speed Silver over Alclad Grey Primer.  Weathering was done with Mig AMMO pigments, panel line washes, and home-brewed oil washes.  Winsor & Newton Galleria Satin Varnish was the final clear coat.

Now it's time to get back to my WNW Ninak!  :)

Outstanding build and the finish is beautiful! I may try the High Speed Silver when I eventually get back to My Meteor  8)

Super metallic finish and weathering is just right - dirty and used but not so much that it looks neglected or about to fall out of the sky!

Ow...missed this one also. Stunning!

I find doing metal surfaces right one of the most difficult things.
You nailed it for sure.  :)

I never tire of looking at Spitfires Eric, and this one is hard to take my eyes off of! Beautifully done, and as mentioned already you aced that natural finish. A model that you can be very proud of.
Cheers,
Lance

Thank you Lance and others for those kind words!  Yup, Spitfires are one of my top favorites too.

It may interest you to know that the silver Spitfires were not natural metal!  They were painted with an aluminum lacquer often referred to as RAF High Speed Silver.  You see the same on other post-war RAF aircraft such as the Gloster Meteor.  Alclad does an RAF HSS which is what was used on my model.

Cheers,
Eric
