Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter- Cosford
« on: May 13, 2015, 04:10:40 PM »
Here's a few picces of the Strutter that was on display at Cosford.  I took about 35 photo's (not including the ones deleted as soon as they were taken), with the idea that I could adjust some in Corel to bring out the detail.  In the end only these seven were marginally useful.  You'll see why- the sun was coming straight in the windows behind the aircraft.

Some notes:

1.  In the photo's the aircraft looks like it's painted brown.  In fact all these photo's have had brightness, contrast, gamma and tone equalisation played with, to bring out the details, and the colours have shifted.  In the flesh, without the sun shining from behind, the fuselage looked a dark greenish brown- almost a darker version of "brown olive drab" from USAAF days of WWII.

2.  Being in the middle of the WWI line up, I couldn't get any decent side shots.  As you'll see, the Strutter was bordered by the Pup and M1.c and hemmed in behind by a Ki46-III, Fw-190 and a few other bits and pieces.

3.  The rib tapes are particularly visible on this aircraft, as opposed to those on the Pup.  The CDL was a greyer, patchier finish than that on both the other two aircraft.

OK, WNW, over to you for a model of this (and the BE2....).

Cheers.

Dal.

Thanks for these, Dal, I have 1/48 Roden Strutter kits lined up for later this year.

Also, purely from a modelling point of view, I'm so glad it didn't become a widespread practice, to route the tailplane control wires down the side of the fuselage like that!

Thanks for posting these, Dal!  The Strutter is one of my favorite types and, like Mark, I've got a bunch of the Roden kits waiting for some decent after market decals (C'mon, Rowan!), but a WNW kit would be very nice indeed.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks Dal. Let's hope that we get a WNW-quality Strutter from someone. It really was a very important aircraft.

Best wishes
Nigel

I'm glad they'll be of use, Gents.  The other WWI aircraft were down at Hendon, so out of range for us on this trip.  I would have loved some "quality time alone" with the Tripe. :)

Mark, there's enough aircraft where they did use external lines to make things "interesting".  But I agree with you 100% mate.  The should put those ugly wires out of sight, and not spoil the look of the aircraft.  ;D

Bud, red-and-white fin with red and white wheel covers not colourful enough, mate? You've been hanging around those gaudy bloody Huns for too long. ;)

These pictures take me back almost half a century when a few of us Air Cadets went down to Cosford on an orientation course - to encourage us to join the RAF.
We were scheduled to go flying one day but the weather was too bad so, at a loss what to do with us, they set us free in these historic aircraft hangars with the order not to break anything!
I remember two or three hours of climbing about these kites, sitting in the cockpits of the Fw190, Mosquito, Me410 etc. Unfortunately I had no camera even if my skills would have been up to the task!
I haven't been back for years, partly because being cordoned off from my previous playthings would have been such a let down.

Half your luck, Sandy. I had 6 hours there during a very rushed trip to the UK. But I'll have a more time next October, as well as getting to Hendon, Shuttleworth and Duxford.

I don't know who said it, mate, but they were right.

Cheers.
