Hobbycraft 1/32 Sopwith Camel query -
« on: September 05, 2016, 01:58:26 AM »
Hi Guys

During some domestic duties :o today I let my mind wander and began to muse. Having built one H'Craft Camel why not do another but now with a bit more knowledge.

I looked on Hannants site but they no longer list one - ebay next and none on there either (well not in the UK) save this one

My question is, discounting the engine type (Clerget or Le Rhone), given that Hobbycraft allegedly upgraded the moulds is that version the same in the box as this one

I would appreciate any knowledgeable comparison between these two versions.

As an aside - if anyone in the UK has one of the latter type but 'Le Rhone' version they wish to part with I'd be interested - reasonable cash offer or I have a fair amount of 1/72 WWI kits I'm getting ready to dispose of.

Regards - Tug

Hi Tug. I stand to be corrected, but I think that's the older Not-so-good version - there must be Le Rhone or Bentley displayed quite prominently on the box...

Marc

Tug,
Apparently Hobbycraft upgraded or re-tooled the molds for their HC 1693 (LeRhone) and HC 1694 (Clerget) versions of the Kit. The HC 1681 kit you illustrate is, according to info somewhere on this site some time back the "not so very good" original Kit as Monty mentions. I was able to purchase both of the newer ones a few years back, something I did as a back up plan should Wingnut Wings ultimately not release a Camel. My reasoning was that should the Wingnut Camel become a reality I could use these ones for the basis of a Comic version or two which now appears the logical plan. I suspect the imminent Wingnut Camel Kit's release will result in a lot of these Kits becoming available; should that not be the case I'd be willing to part with one of my two for a reasonable amount to help out, postage being the nasty part of course.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks Marc and Lance for your replies.

I've been doing some further digging and came to the conclusion which you now both confirm.

I'm not in any rush Lance - but I do appreciate your kind offer. It was just that I was thinking about another one and musing on just when the WNW will materialise when the thought struck me that apart from one or two small areas the HC one is reasonably accurate so having done one felt it would be worth tackling another and hence save a considerable outlay on a 'wingnutter' version (saving instead for the Halberstadt or Dolphin or .....  ;))

I have a search marked in Ebay - I'll keep my eyes open at the odd show too

Thanks again - Tug

Tug I know I have one of the Later Camels, I think its this one.  I had intended building it but I know I wont. too may projects half done already!

I'm in Kent and if you decide you want it let me know. It's sitting in the loft, I might have had a poke around but honestly can't recall. I do know it will never get built. along with the best part of two of the Academy variant I've set file and blade to.  I'll chuck em in with it to get rid of them... something might be cannibalisable. LOL just let me know.
