HI Marc P,
Sorry for the tardy reply. I'm glad you like the covering. It wasn't hard to do. I have nothing for sale but you can make it yourself! Here's what I did...
I had an old picutre with lozenge shapes I used to cover a peanut scale rubber band powered airplane. I scanned it, expanded and changed the shapes a bit and added color. I played with the "warmth" etc. until it looked the way I think it should be...kind of blue. I then searched and found a company that made decal paper specifically for color laser printers. It was then easy to print as many as I liked/needed.
The decal paper itself worked very well with a couple of warnings. I think the printer I used ran slightly hot and so much of my sheets have imperfections where no color is seen. I'm just calling it weathering and not getting too worried about it. You can see it if you look closely. The pictures, for once, look better (in my opinion) than the real thing!
The paper is nice since you don't need to coat it at all. Just print, cut out your shape, soak in water and the clear part separates easily. It's tough, too. I could put a very large sheet on without any worry (almost a whole 1/2 wingspan). It moves easily with some water and is thin. I found that it didn't stick too well but by brushing on a layer of Johnson's Klear (Future), the decals stuck well and formed reasonably well around detail once dry. Setting solutions seemed to work a little but the Klear worked well enough to me. It was also easy to make tiny slits with a knife to get air bubbles out once dry and hit those with some more "Klear" or setting solution.
This is what I used:
http://www.texascraft.com/hps/catalog/Laser_Clear_Waterslide_Sheets_85_in_x_11_in_10_Sheets-p-17531.htmlI have no affiliation with the company but it worked great for me. I'll buy more for my AEG, that's for sure. I have a little vac too.
Next time I won't have such thick black outlines around my shapes. I think you can just erase those while you are making the shapes from scratch. I'll also make a master that's more random since I think these were hand painted and probably varied wildly.
Anyway, I hope this helps...
Dan
