Hints/Tips re WNW Decals?
« on: February 05, 2014, 01:22:13 PM »
I've run into a snag in building my WNW Fokker D.VII F. The decals went on the motor just fine, but now that I have moved onto the cockpit I am having issues. The decals for the gauge on the throttle/mixture control [90] and for the wrapping on both sides of the fuselage frame [450 & 451] both came off the carrier with little adhesive (would not stick) and seemed to be thick and stiff.

The water was clean. I left them in the water no more than 10-15 sec, and when they were moveable on the paper slid them off onto the appropriate areas (which had been gloss-coated with Future).

I ended up super gluing the gauge to its part and am okay leaving the wrappings off the frames. However, with more obvious decaling coming up, I want to make sure I am not doing something wrong. And, yes, I have purchased the Aviattic set for the D.VII F  :)

Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks!

I have built 2 WNW DVIIs. I did not have any trouble with instrument decals but did run into a little difficulty with the wraps for the frame. I have also used WNW streaks, Lozenge, and all personal and national markings with no difficulty. I don't think you will encounter any further problems. Just make sure your surface is glossy and use setting solutions as needed. Just my opinion,

That's very unusual and really surprises me. I've never had a problem with the Cartograph Decals that I believe are standard for both Windnut Kits and their After Market Decal products; in fact I just sang their praises in my Build Thread yesterday! I have had a few very fine/tiny ones wander about a bit and seem to lose their adhesive but I find the decal setting solution always solves the problem. All I've ever used in that regard is the Microscale Setting Solution ("Microset") however I'm  sure the others I see mentioned are just as good. Just follow the directions: slide the decal onto a few drops or puddle of the solution on the model, use your small paintbrush to move it to where you want it and dab up excess with a damp cloth. I usually press the decal to the point of removing any air bubbles, particularly around raised details as well, ensuring the cloth is wet but not dripping and it's done. From your comments here I'd say you need to add the setting solution to your procedure.
Cheers, & hope this is helpful, :)

Thanks to both of you for the info! For some reason, I thought that I had read somewhere that one was not supposed to use Micro Sol/Set with the WNW decals . . . and here I have both bottles within arms reach  :-[

Back to the workbench tomorrow. Again, thanks!

Wingnuts themselves don't recommend it, but Set certainly works fine.

So does Sol. ;)

Micro products seem to work OK on WNW decals, by all accounts and I know from reports from our customers that they also haven't so far caused any problems with our own decals but none the less, as a decal designer/manufacturer these patent potions make me nervous. The wetting agent (blue label ) is fine, as it simply breaks the surface tension of the water and allows easier movement of the decal (a drop of diswashing liquid in the decal water serves the same purpose and is much cheaper!) but the red label solvent actually works by dissolving/softening the printing ink and as such the scope for damage is obvious. Some other decal setting agents are much more aggressive ("Champs" and Humbrol Decafix, for example) and really shouldn't be used with Pheon decals or probably WNW ones either. If in doubt always test on a spare decal first or, far better, use heat to settle the decal from a hair dryer and/or a towel dipped in hot water: quicker, cheaper and more controllable. I really don't understand why this technique isn't used more widely; perhaps if I bought up a cheap batch of hair dryers, labelled them as the Pheon Decal Setter and sold them for fifty quid a pop....... now there's an idea! I once tried to compute how much cash has been made by "Micro" selling their sol and set and I'd not be surprised if they have made more out of those two little bottles than all their decals put together - how many modellers don't have them on their bench? Great marketing.

I don't have Sol nor Set, but have used Decalfix on WNW decals with no difficulty.  However I agree with Rowan, the most effective method (for me) has been heat treatment.

I don't have micro set or sol but I do use a hair dryer a lot with great success. I do have Mr Mark Softer which works really well under most decals, except Spada, and when used in conjunction with the hair dryer success is assured.

Normally the decals I've used have been fine with just water and a hairdryer.

I've had problems before with WNW lozenge not adhering to the surface very well and my current Snipe build the decals were sealed with future, weathered with a thinned paint and for some reason I decided to seal the paint with a final cost of future and at this stage they lifted ??

I have heard of other modelers fixing decals over matt paint and not have any silvering problems, the use of a hair dryer is essential though, I have not been game enough to try it yet. Have you used this method Justin?
