Easiest WWI kit in 1/32
« on: September 11, 2013, 05:49:15 AM »
Hello all,

As most of you probably know, I had by-pass surgery in May and am recovering at a pretty good pace with only one minor hiccup. As the doc re-adjusts my meds, my hands have been prone to swelling, making my finer motor skills suffer, which means I've had to shelve my Albatros temporarily. This leads to my question:

What type and manufacturer makes the easiest WWI kit to rig? It seems most flat PE is simple enough to work with, but the rigging and turnbuckles are my biggest problem, along with fine detail painting and application. So I guess what I'm after is a kit with good detail, like WNW, yet low on rigging. The Dv Albatros along with the Taurus resin and rigging, is too much right now.

Any suggestions?  ???

Good to hear about your recovery.

Like Red Baron said, i would although suggest the Fokker D.VII or the DR.1... there's almost no rigging.

Cheers

No rigging at all on the WNW Junkers J.I -- it's a big ugly brute, kind of tank-like -- but I know you do armor and like weathering -- that might be a fun subject for you?

Or the HB W29 , low wing monoplane and no rigging+ floats and neat decal choices (if you can find one.)
Life is short, enjoy it, nobody gets out alive.

Lawman,

Glad your on the road to recovery!

What about one of the old Revell 1/28 scale WW1 kits?  The Fokker DR1 in this scale is a reasonable size with minimal rigging.

Dave
As we say in fencing, what's the point?

Hmmm. Big, ugly, brutish, AND tank-like..... The J.I sounds like a possibility! Flying tanks are always interesting.  :)

Actually, Dave, I gave some thought to the 1/28 Revel stuff and even the 1/18th models out there, but honestly I think my AMS would kick in and I'd get frustrated trying to over detail them and not being able too.

I vote for the J.1. Those WWI armored German aircraft are fascinating machines.

Rob,
I haven't built the Junkers however have seen several on display; big, ugly, most impressive, and the advantage of no rigging. Should be a perfect choice for a "Tanker" like yourself. The DVII is a great choice also.
Cheers,
Lance

I'd go for the Junkers, I have built this model and it was a pleasure to build, yes, it is big and ugly but it looks good sitting among my other WW1 models.

The J-1 was my choice to sort of re-learn biplane construction after some time with armor and WWII planes.

Congrats on your speedy recovery, Joe!  The Junkers gets my vote, as well.  It's one of only six WNW kits in my stash and I actually find the wing design very attractive. Whatever you choose, have fun, buddy.

Bud
